FANCIED BENGALURU HORSES FLOP BADLY

By Ikram Khan | 09 Sep 2022 | MYSORE

Mr Chaduranga Kanthraj Urs & trainer James Mckeown leading Loch Lomond (P Trevor Up), winner of The H H Sri Chamaraja Wadiyar Memorial Trophy

After all the brouhaha and the big talk that Bengaluru horses will dominate the Mysore season, the moment they start to travel to the royal city went phut, 10  horses entered by the three trainers,  Arjun Manglorkar, Sulaiman Attaollahi and Sharath Kumar  failed  to enter the winners' circle including the three hot favourites, Muirfield, Kensington and The Sovereign Orb. Loch Lomond from the Chennai-based pro James Mckeown's yard  was the solitary winner from the outstation wagon, which also had a Kolkata hopeful Mandela from Vijay Singh's yard who, like the fancied horses from Bengaluru failed to make an impression.

The three overwhelming favourites from the prolific senior group took the punters to the cleaners. The Arjun Manglorkar schooled Muirfield was backed to the exclusion of her six rivals in the Kasargod Plate run over a distance of 2000 metres and the even-money favourite in the hands of John only beat one home in the six-horse field after Lycurgus from another Bengaluru pro Sharath Kumar's stable opted out. The eight to one shot Lucky Luciano from Bobby's yard confidently piloted by Hindu Singh pegged back Coyote Girl, while Great Hope managed to save money in place, finishing third ahead of the topweighted Forest View.

Next it was Kensington, who on the strength of his satisfactory only start in the Bengaluru  winter season was fancied most to easily score in the J H Foley Memorial Trophy, but all that the public choice from Arjun's yard did was chase the shadow of the ten to one shot Achook from Rakesh's yard brilliantly piloted by Umesh. John astride the runner-up took precious time to put his mount in top gear and by the time Kensington gathered momentum, Achook and Umesh had stolen a march and in the final 100 meters it was clear that the bird had flown and John and Kensington much to the disappointment of large following had to rest content with the runner-up berth.

After Kensington's debacle, the (40/100) public rage The Sovereign Orb floored the punters. It  simply was a knock-out blow from which the punters never recovered and dejectedly walked back home hoping to recover the big loss on the Ooty races at Chennai tomorrow (Saturday, while promising to stay away from Mysuru races and the Bengaluru horses. Another long shot Gold Field from Aditya's yard piloted in determined fashion by the four-kilo claimer B Darshan made every post a winning one in the Yelahanka Plate run over a sprint. The public rage, The Sovereign Orb despite leading pro Trevor Patel packing punch found the local hopeful too hot to handle and again failed to justify his top billing.

Earlier the half-money favourite Loch Lomond from James McKeown's yard proved too good in the H H Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Memorial Trophy, the plum event run over a sprint. Loch Lomond in fact was the only favourite to score in the seven-event card and the report card shows that only four favourites have won from the 26 races in the four days. That effectively puts the favourite strike rate less than 20 percent and that's a horrible statistic from the punters point of view. Eye The Mind from Pratap Kamath's yard finished a creditable second behind Loch Lomond, while Mandela raced in patches and eventually finished in the ruck.

The Jackpot pool hunters were stunned in the opening leg, the 20 to one nohoper from Appachu's yard Angel Dreams piloted by Sarvan Kumar edging out another unfancied stablemate Vijaya Miracle  in the Paddock Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. After the opening jolt, the five-horse puzzle looked difficult to crack and following the defeat of Kensington and The Sovereign Orb, a sum of Rs, 47,498 was carried over.  Shivalik Emperor from Rakesh's yard garnered the maximum support in the event, but the top fancy partnered by Umesh never got going and failed to even save money in place.

Impelling Power from Girinath's stable opened the favourite in the opening event, the Kumaradhara Plate, before the supporters of Fassbinder went bang-bang in the betting ring and soon the Ramesh ward despite being piloted by H G Rathod  was the top fancy. The well supported favourite, who in fact had let down his supporters in his last essay again took a lot of good money down the drain failing to make the board much to the chagrin of the favourite punters. Impelling Power piloted by Sai Kiran reigned  supreme snuffing out the challenge of D Durga, while Spiritual Force finished third ahead of Mystical Merlin.

The in-form Eddie The Eagle chalked out his second straight win this season and trainer Md.Sajid deserves a pat on the back for sending out Eddie The Eagle spot on again. The winner after tracking the advantageously placed in at the scales, Silver Days Again streaked ahead in the final furlong to provide an encore to the delight of the Sajid camp. The lesser fancied Lovely Thoughts piloted by Jagadeesh `nosed' out Silver Days Again to gain the runner-up, while the two market leaders, Wind Power and Beat The Odds, it was clear were never in the hunt.
