MILOS WINS CIVIL SERVICES TROPHY

On a day money changed hands fast and fine, two big gambles rocked the bookmakers after the first coup on Silver Days Again missed the mark by the shortest of margins largely due to the fact that Kiran Rai guiding the fortunes of the heavily backed Tejaswi ward shockingly failed to pack the required punch at the finish, going down by a `head' to the eight to one shot D Fighter piloted by apprentice jockey Shreyas Singh. It is true that the top fancy Silver Days Again was hanging in the final furlong, but taking into account that she was travelling much better than the winner, Kiran Rai could have gained the day if he had been more enterprising and more importantly willing to win a race he lost at the shadow of the winning post. After D Fighter was declared the winner following the photo-finish result, the winner from Vishal Yadav's yard had to win the race again in the Stewards room following two objections lodged, one against the winner by Nazer-Ul-Alam, rider of the third placed Bellissimo and the other against Bellissimo by Janardhan Paswan the pilot of Coorg General who finished close fourth.
Nazer-Ul-Alam in his protest claimed that the winner shifted out and interfered with his progress in the closing stage and this cost him a certain race. Paswan's contention was that Alam had tightened him on the rails and as a result he could not ride out his mount in the final 100 metres. The Stewards of the Club after a long deliberation rightly overruled the two objections.

In the next event, the top division of the Udhagamandalam Trophy, Bengaluru challenger Clever Hans from Prithviraj's yard was backed down from (4/1) to (90/100), while the Arjun Manglorkar schooled Pinnacle Point who opened at evens in the betting ring drifted out to (7/2). The public choice confidently piloted by Kolkata-based pro Hindu Singh streaked ahead at the distance post and hung on, gamely pegging back the belated effort of the lesser fancied Anakin from Lokanath Gowda's yard. All Pinnacle Point could do was save money in place, while sending out a message that he will take time to make his presence felt in this (20-45) category.

Like Clever Hans, The King N I from Warren Singh's yard was backed to the exclusion of his seven rivals, after Think N Fly was withdrawn in the third division of the Udhagamandalam Trophy run over a sprint. The smart winner looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring and the stable connections supremely confident of the `Kings' ability smashed him down from (4/1) to even-money despite the fact that A R Pradeep was listed to partner the ace up Warren's sleeve. The King N I travelled strongly all through the sprint journey though Pradeep failed to exercise control and settle the piping hot favourite early on in the race. But this didn't stop King N I from powering home to the delight of the Warren camp. Altair finished second ahead of Azhar Ali schooled Able One, while Royal Command completed the frame.

Azhar Ali proudly led in the top fancy Memoriter in the Nagaland Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The public choice piloted by the promising apprentice Saqlain tracked the leader Frenet Branca for most part of the journey before Saqlain in a fine, hands and heels exhibition gained the day close home. The second in demand at the betting ring, Lovely Thoughts piloted by another apprentice Alex Rozario in this no whips race, challenged the two leaders strongly at the distance post before he ran out of gas and had to rest content with the third spot.

The Michael Eshwer schooled Milos reigned supreme in the plum event, the Civil Services Trophy. O Kanhaiya from Rakesh's yard garnered the maximum support in the betting ring, but the favourite after assuming command at the top of the straight failed to peg back the determined bid of Milos partnered by Antony Raj. Srinath who partnered O Kanhaiya had earlier finished second behind the eight to one shot Spiritual Queen in the opening event while guiding the fortunes of the overwhelming favourite News Maker another fancied contestant from Rakesh's yard. Shivalik Danush shocked most railbirds finishing third, while the second in demand at the betting ring, Shivalik Attitude in his effort to make every post a winning one shot his bolt at the top of the straight and eventually finished in the ruck.
