GUTSY EUPHORIC WINS YORK HANDICAP

By Ikram Khan | 24 Sep 2022 | OOTY

Euphoric (Yash Narredu Up), winner of The York Handicap

On a day form played true and more than half-dozen fancied contestants galloped into the winners' circle, Yash Narredu stole the limelight recording a grand treble. And taking into account that he booted home all three well-backed favourites, the railbirds loved it and at the end returned home with a smile on their faces and lot of pink currency in their pockets.

Yash opened his account through the on-money favourite Senora Bianca in the lower division of the Pimlico Handicap run over a sprint. The public rage from the stables of Ramanathan, who had impressed most, while finishing second behind  Cartel in her last essay was backed to the exclusion of her nine rivals, many old hats in the game considering her a `cinch' in this moderate set, but it didn't pan out the way the forecast was doing the rounds in the stands and in fact Yash needed to stretch every sinew to edge out the long shot Lord Of The Turf,  a `neck' separating the two at the wire. Daiyamondo finished a creditable third and it will pay to support this mare from Dhruv Futnani's yard early in the Chennai season.

Astride the Sebastian-trained Lakshanam in the next event, the lower division of the Belmont Park Handicap run over a mile, Yash had it easy, the public choice producing a winning gallop at the top of the straight to quickly put the race to bed in the final furlong. Vulcanic from Adhirajsingh Jodha's yard finished second ahead of Majestic Wind, while the second in demand at the betting ring, Royal Treasure from Robert Foley's yard raced in patches and eventually finished in the ruck, much to the disappointment of her supporters. Now that the moody Lakshanam has started to produce good efforts back to back, the Sebastian ward is set to provide an encore.

In line for a treble, Yash guiding the fortunes of Albinus from James McKeown's yard  in the upper division of the Belmont Park Handicap knew that Glorious Grace from the stables of Sebastian was the horse to beat. He in the mile long journey tracked Glorious Grace, who was sent on a start to finish mission by Antony Raj. The second in demand at the betting ring called the shots till the final furlong before Yash packed punch on the James ward and Albinius responding well to his master's call quickened nicely to steal a march and put the issue beyond doubt in the final 100 metres. Ibrahimovic expectedly finished third and it will not be long before he earns his cornbill.

Earlier, the bred in the purple Remediesofspring, winner of the Fillies classic was strongly fancied to score in the York Handicap run over a mile. But the on-money favourite piloted by Antony Raj  found the Jodha schooled Euphoric too hot to handle and had to rest content with the runner-up berth. Kaviraj guided the second in demand at the betting ring Euphoric in copybook fashion and on the strength of his sublime effort on Saturday, this talented colt is certain to make his presence felt in the higher class. Remediesofspring in defeat was not disgraced and lives to fight another day.

After the 10 to one shot Autumn Shower pushed the punters on the back foot, winning the opening event, the Nad Al Sheba Handicap in the hands of Amit, Ashhad Asbar helped the punters quickly recoup their losses, packing punch on the well backed public choice Striking Distance to record a popular victory. Kings Show surprised most gaining the runner-up berth ahead of another long shot Wonderful Era from lady trainer Rupa's yard, while the second favourite Star Fling was never in the hunt.

Rupa struck through the lesser fancied Fun Storm in the concluding event, the upper division of the Wolverhampton Handicap run over 1100M dash. The topweight piloted by five-kilo claimer Sah Farid Ansari stole a march at the distance post and held on gallantly to peg back the belated effort of Lordship from Suresh's yard, who went down by the shortest of margins. The strongly fancied Katahdin was seen finishing on strongly in what really was a  blow-hot, blow-cold effort. The on-money favourite could have done a lot better had Ashhad Asbar been more enterprising all through the sprint dash. The lower division of the event was claimed by the six to one shot Magical Wish piloted by M S Deora. The winner from Dhruv's yard showed good turn of foot when the race came on a boil and it was clear the bird had flown a furlong from home and Pacific and the piping hot favourite Beejay only followed the winner home in that order.

Royal Monarch was fancied most in the Udhagamandalam Trophy. But all that the heavily backed Robert Foley ward did was take a lot of good money down the drain, finishing a tame third behind the winner Angavai and the runner-up Current View. The winner from Mandanna's yard  was partnered in determined fashion by Kaviraj who after taking the lead relentlessly applied pressure on his mount to stay ahead and get into the winners' circle.
