RAINS PLAYS SPOILSPORT ON FINAL DAY

By Ikram Khan | 28 Sep 2022 | OOTY

Rain played spoilsport on the penultimate day of the Ooty races held at Chennai on Wednesday. After the first three races, a thunder shower followed by steady drizzle forced the Stewards of the Madras Race Club to cancel the remaining six races.

Mention must be made that the decision makers patiently waited for two hours hoping that the weather will clear, but with rain continuing, the authorities had no choice but to cancel the remainder of the programme. The Uthaiah schooled Icy River garnered the maximum support in the opening event, the Jebel Ali Handicap run over a sprint.

The favourite piloted by Kaviraj met a tartar in Nagada from Ramanathan's yard. The winner piloted by the talented apprentice Saqlain, who has won the hearts of many a lover of sport, consistently booting home at all the premier centres kicked clear at the distance post and quickly put the rest to bed in the final furlong. Majestic Charmer finished third behind the runner-up Icy River, while Lady Zeen completed the frame.

The ten to one shot Renegade from the stables of Krishna dropped a bombshell in the lower division of the Goodwood Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs. The winner piloted by Kamble tracked the two leaders Diamond And Pearls and Illustrious Ruler for most part of the journey before Kamble packed punch at the top of the straight and Renegade responding well to his master's call responded gamely to assume command in the final furlong and put the issue beyond doubt in the final 100 metres. The even-money favourite Aretha from Sebastian's yard was seen covering good ground in the final furlong, but the bird had flown and the public choice had to rest content with the runner-up berth. Illustrious Ruler from Robert Foley's yard, who lost to Rays Of Sun by the shortest of margins in his last start found the first two too hot to handle  and only managed to save place money.

On the strength of her suggestive effort in her last essay, third behind the winner Cartel and the runner-up Senora Bianca who subsequently earned her corn bill in her next start, Mezcal from James McKeown's yard was fancied most in the Windsor Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs. But the public choice again failed to justify favouritism, finishing down the field much to the chagrin of the railbirds. The five to one shot Windmere piloted in copybook fashion by Kamble charged into the winners' circle, much to the delight of his supporters, while Bright Light in his effort to make every post a winning one held on to finish second ahead of Showmanship.
