SPEEDSTER WINS GOVERNOR’S CUP

Trainer Warren Singh leading Speedster (Antony Raj S Up), winner of The Governor's Cup

Trainer Warren Singh is enjoying his stint at the royal city. After leading in three winners including the well gambled The King NI earlier in the season, Warren struck it rich, his gutsy grey mare Speedster winning the Governor's Cup in emphatic fashion on Friday. The six to one shot piloted by the in-form pro Antony Raj upset the applecart of the on-money favourite Trafalgar from James McKeown's yard. The public rage in line for a hat-trick partnered by the top gun Trevor Patel tracked the leader Jake for most part of the gruelling 2000 metres journey and even before Trevor could steal a march, Antony put Speedster in top gear turning for home and she quickly put the race to bed in the final furlong.

After losing out big on Trafalgar, the punters did well to recoup their losses on the next two favourites, Silver Days Again and Jersey Legend. The former from Tejaswi's yard, who went down by the shortest of margins to D Fighter, thanks to the below par effort of jockey Kiran Rai in her last essay, made ample amends in the Papanashini Plate run over a sprint.  The talented pro Sai Kumar pushed the public choice to the front, the moment the nine runners came under the starter's flag and never let the initiative slip, romping home a deserving winner. Coastal Cruise from Surender's yard too was fancied strongly, but the grey found the Tejaswi ward too hot to handle at end. Crimson Fire finished third ahead and it will pay to support this Kamath trainee, when saddled next.

Jersey Legend from Md.Khan's yard was touted a `moral certainty' in the concluding event, the upper division of the Nyveli Plate. The strongly supported even-money favourite provided jockey Ramandeep an arm-chair ride to success and on the strength of this performance is certain to provide an encore. Come Alive expectedly gained the runner-up berth ahead of the topweighted NRI Level who will prove to be a different proposition next time out with a better saddle artiste guiding his fortunes. The lower division of the event was claimed by the second in demand at the betting ring Akasi from Inayathullah's yard. The winner piloted by A R Pradeep snuffed out the challenge of the public choice Thea's  Gift in convincing fashion and it will pay to follow this Inayathullah ward again next time out.

Mark One from M R Singh's yard and Fernet Branca from the stables of Darius Byramji topped the betting boards in the AR Subramanya Raj Urs Memorial Trophy, the principal added attraction. But the `Jodi' went out of the window to the delight of the bookmakers. Ignored in the betting ring after twice second from as many attempts, Anakin from Lokanath Gowda's yard confidently piloted by Jagadeesh produced a sparkling gallop in the final furlong to assume command and put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Fernet Branca hung on to gain the second spot ahead of The Response who only managed to save money in place. Mark One showed a lot of initial speed and called the shots till the straight before retiring much to the chagrin of the M R Singh camp.

Trainer Bobby planned a big gamble on Tarek. He chose the hit man Saqlain to execute his mission. And the most sought after apprentice made no mistake guiding home Tarek who was backed down from (7/2) to (6/4) in the Delhi Plate run over a mile. Parker finished second ahead of Worldly Wise, who was tipped to give Tarek a run for the money, but that didn't happen, the Bobby ward sparing a `neck' to Parker, while Worldly found the first two too hot to handle.

Flash Bond from Kamath's yard, Gintoki from the stables of Monnappa and the Eshwer schooled Tia Maria were fancied most in the opening event, the Belgaum Plate run over a mile and at end it was Flash Bond driven out by Angad who gained the day from Tia Maria. Aurele finished a creditable third while Gintoki only managed to complete the frame.
