Trainer D Netto leading Lagos (Suraj Narredu Up), winner of The Telangana Race Horse Owners Association Trophy

The Suraj Narredu ridden mare Lagos (Gusto – Blumarine), though conceding weight to her six rivals in the Telangana Race Horse Owners Trophy, waltzed away to victory over the six furlong trip on Thursday. Paying tribute to her master’s skills, Lagos not only record a hat-trick this season but also carved a milestone in Donald Netto’s 1000th career win, which would remain etched in his memory forever. Netto reached this magical number in the silver jubilee year of his career.

Like Netto, punters too went home delighted as all the first favourite horses in the card of six events obliged. Lagos got straight down to business as the gates opened and proved too good for her opponents. New Look tried to match strides shortly after the start by joining Lagos but it was nothing but committing hara-kiri. The second favourite was a spent force in the straight following which Scramjet was ridden all-out to fill the runner up berth ahead of Kingston and Top Secret.

Netto earlier led in Tiger Mountain (Top Class – Star Mountain) who registered an encore in the hands of jockey Ajeeth Kumar. Joint favourite Yesterday was taken on a pillar to post mission over the mile journey by Akshay Kumar but was collared by Tiger Mountain with over a furlong away from home. The winner drifted out slightly under pressure after taking charge which allowed Yesterday to renew his bid. Ajeeth however swiftly stemmed Tiger Mountain’s drift helping Tiger Mountain to assert her authority though only by a neck margin. Queen Blossom and Desert Sultan filled the frame a long way back.

Magan Singh Parmar schooled Black Onyx (Stardan – Dancing Dame), who made his debut as a four-year old in the February last, earned his fourth bracket this season with an empathic win in the day’s curtain raiser. Jockey DS Deora allowed Ambitious Star to head the field in the early stages before launching his assault in the home stretch. Black Onyx first tried to poke through between Ambitious Star and City Of Bliss but failed to get an opening. Deora then found the gap on the inner rails and quickly switched lanes enabling Black Onyx to skip clear for a convincing win. Ambitious Star held on to the second spot from Dyanoosh, who covered lot of ground after a lethargic start. Beauty On Parade finished fourth.

N R I Superpower, the shortest priced runner of the day, gave no anxious moments to his followers in the Dr Harish Chandra Memorial Cup. RH Sequeira saddled three-year old N R I Superpower (Win Legend – One Life To Live) was settled in the mid-bunch by Akshay as Francis Bacon decided to set the pace over the Derby trip. Akshay brought N R I Superpower into contention as soon as Francis Bacon had called it a day in the final lap of the race. The winner surged ahead in the last 100m after a brief tussle with Advanced Guard and went on to win from owner-mate N R I Sun, who had never traversed more than a mile in his career. Advanced Guard was edged out at the post by N R I Sun while Wallop And Gallop ended fourth.

The three-year-old filly Alabama (Sanus Per Aquam – Amazing Charm) improved after her lung-opener on debut to graduate from the maiden ranks with a comfortable victory. The Laxman Singh trained and Kiran Naidu ridden Alabama came a powerful run to tackle second favourite La Mirage, who had assumed command from leader Resurgence in the last two furlongs. La Mirage led for a furlong or so before Alabama overwhelmed him. Path Of Peace was hard-ridden to finish in the money ahead of Role Model.

Golden Inzio landed the spoils immediately on being exploited in a handicap event. The S Sreekant groomed Golden Inzio (Midnight Interlude – Pour Vous) came with a sparkling run in the straight to go sailing past Paree, who had some smart money coming her way in the betting ring. Kuldeep Singh ridden Golden Inzio won easily from both That’s My Way and Good Tidings who finished on late. Paree ended close behind.
