Our Excellence makes a smashing debut

Oyster Cove (C.Rajendra up) winning the Dr.S.C.Jain Sprinters' Million (Gr.2) from Atmosphere (Gallagher up)

The debut of three-year-old Our Excellence (Placerville-Pleasure Hunt) was unique in more sense than one. For the first time trainer S. Ganapathy actually saddled a horse for owners other than his chief patron and more importantly Our Excellence made an awe-inspiring debut in the Y.M.Chaudhary Memorial Trophy. For the day's record, he was the only clear favourite to oblige even as the others were falling like nine pins. Jockey C. Rajendra got a chance ride on Our Excellence as the originally declared rider, B. Prakash, was injured in a track accident at Bangalore on Saturday. Our Excellence, owned by the Poonawalla brothers in partnership with Dr M. A. M Ramaswamy and Capt. Jamshed Appoo, gave Rajendra a free cruise to the winner's circle. Incidentally Rajendra has ridden both The Hurricane and Schnell for Altaf Hussain earlier but he wouldn't hesitate to say that Our Excellence is easily the best among these three. Truly speaking, Our Excellence belongs to a different league. Chevron showed the way to the field while Our Excellence was settled just a couple of lengths behind. His demeanour suggested that he was going through the motions of his morning canter routine. Coming into the home stretch Ganapathy's ward had the measure of Chevron in a trice and galloped away majestically for a resounding win. Although Rajendra may have to go along with The Hurricane in the Poonawalla Breeders' Multi-Million, he will know that Schnell and Our Excellence can and will pose a live threat to his title bid if they opt to run. Chevron was not disgraced in his defeat as he truly came across one better but Mickey Mantle disappointed by throwing in the towel too early. There is something big brewing with Party Celebration. This horse trained by Bharath Singh has been entrusted to lesser-known riders in all his three outings yet he has shown, to those who have cared to glance at him, that he has what it takes to win as and when his connections feel is an opportune time. Oyster Cove (Royal Kingdom-Gumbaru Etsu) presented Rajendra with a back-to-back trophy double by winning the (Gr.2) Dr.S.C. Jain Sprinters' Million. The Shiraz Sunderji trained gelding has been a consistent performer and lived up to expectations after his last run behind Atmosphere. Favourite Evatina stole a march over her rivals when Pampered Princess had brought them all into the straight. Oyster Cove was soon breathing down Evatina's neck and managed to subdue her. Meanwhile Atmosphere was unleashed by Mark Gallagher and the mare produced her trademark flourish and came tantalisingly close to overthrowing Oyster Cove, who found the winning post coming to his rescue. Atmosphere lives to fight another day. Diego Rivera's run came as a shock as he failed to raise any hopes even momentarily. Pampered Princess ran a gallant race and finished a close fifth behind the stalwarts. Rajendra would've surely scored a hat-trick but Imtiaz Sait's mare Oprah (Glory of Dancer-Our Royal Highness) chose the Lt.Col. Govind Singh VRC Trophy to find her lost form and came with a powerful run when encouraged by Malcolm Kharadi in the long Mahalaxmi stretch. Oprah was lying last but one when Collateral and Yess Boss brought the pack into view. Mysterious Land tried in vain to carry the burden and then Rajendra brought Suraj into contention. He was engaged in a bitter duel with Mansingh Jadhav's candidate Thundering Star till the last stride but Oprah's late run stunned them both at the post. Favourite Desert Conqueror failed to justify the support despite enjoying a hefty weight margin over Suraj. Imtiaz saddled another long priced winner when Native Strategy (Placerville-Native Tactics) was driven powerfully by Malesh Narredu and managed to outwit Faisal Abbas trained Escravos, who was surprisingly entrusted to R. Shelar. Both Escravos, who seems to have a jinx, and the punters had to pay dearly for this decision. Pepe Junior ran a fair third ahead of Star O'War. Newfoundland's run was inexplicable. Orlando Bloom ran in the same fashion as his stablemate but fared a little better in finishing third on the board. But that couldn't prevent the money of his followers from going down the drain. Dallas Todywalla trained Red Dawn (Storm Trooper-Serious Trouble) defied the handicapper to achieve an encore in the hands of Malcolm Kharadi. King's Desire ended up with better-than-expected stakes. Acceptance ran well with blinkers and can earn a bracket probably over a scurry. Sanjay Kolse must've been very happy with himself as he finally got an opportunity to lead not one but two winners. Jockey Aadesh Kumar became Sanjay's comrade-in-arms during this mission. Sanjay's initial success came through Light My Fire (Gaswar-L.A. Woman) who raced in the rear at the turn when Malesh Narredu driven Black Warrior held the advantage. Aadesh lit the fire for the filly and she in turn set the racetrack ablaze. The chestnut filly pursued Black Warrior doggedly and had her say in virtually the last stride. The well-bred filly Benfica (Razeen-Born To Dance) relished the galloping ground offered in the mile-and-a-quarter trip and progressed gradually and really took off from the final bend to go breezing past Indian Fashion. She then won warding off both Magical Morn and Landlord. Amenable languished throughout the journey and so did A Royal High. There was a dramatic start to the day's proceedings and the subsequent actions of the RWITC stemmed what could have turned into an ugly situation after apprentice Raju Singh tried his best to prevent Mazan from winning. The race, won by Cabinda, was declared null and void.
