MYSTERIOUS ANGEL DROPS BOMBSHELL IN SI OAKS

By Ikram Khan | 06 Jan 2023 | CHENNAI

Mr Himmat Singh Dhillon leading Mysterious Angel (P Ajeeth Kumar Up), winner of The South India Oaks (Gr.2)

The crowd at Guindy was totally silent. The shock treatment provided by Hyderabad raider Mysterious Angel in the third classic of the season, the South India Oaks, stunned the railbirds from which they never could recover and at the end it was the bookmakers, who returned home with the many pink and green sacks, while the hard hit punters in a state of shock slowly walked back home.hoping to recoup their losses on Derby week-end.

Local hero Forever from Deepesh Narredu's yard partnered by brother Yash was fancied most to win the `Ladies Derby' but the best performed filly in the dash to the wire failed to overhaul the 25 to one long shot from the city of nawabs. The winner piloted by Ajeeth was least  fancied in the field of seven classic hopefuls and she pulled the plug and detonated her six rivals including the overwhelming local mainhope, who finished on strongly after the bird had flown at Guindy to the delight of her few supporters. Andorra raced in patches, but did well at end to finish a creditable third ahead of the Bengaluru challenger Place Vendome, The fact that Mysterious Angel had finished more than five lengths behind the winner Remediesofspring and Place Vendome too had comfortably finished ahead of her in the 1000 Guineas clearly indicates that winner and the runner-up apart, the five others in the fray lacked the stamina required to make their presence felt in the big classic test and the filly who stayed best emerged the Queen.

After Mysterious Angel dropped the biggest bombshell in the classic event, the four to one shot Fiat Justitia from the stables of Mandanna produced a good turn of foot in the hands of promising apprentice B Darshan in the next event, the Manitou Handicap run over 1000.metres. A model of consistency, the B Suresh-trained Zucardi was fancied to enter the winners' circle in this moderate set, but the filly in the hands of Yash in her attempt to make every post a winning one shot her bolt approaching the distance post and only managed to finish a tame third behind the winner Fiat Justitia and the runner-up Stern Maiden who covered good ground at end and is certain to earn her cornbill over an extended trip.

In the concluding event, the Multidimensional Handicap run over a sprint, Yash Narredu was back again guiding the fortunes of another public choice Terminator from Deepesh's yard. The overwhelming favourite after being favourably placed at the top of the straight failed to quicken and finished in the ruck, much to the chagrin of his large following, who were of the view that Terminator will provide an encore after he surprised Lebua over an identical distance in his last essay. The five to  one shot Winning Legacy in the hands of veteran Dashrath Singh powered home to the delight of the Adhirajsingh Jodha camp, zipping past the topweighted Augusta and Lady Blazer.

Earlier, the second in demand at the betting ring, Trump Baby from Fazal-Ur-Rehman's yard edged out the lesser fancied Memory Lane from the stables of Sebastian in the opening event, the lower division of the Revelation Handicap run over a sprint. The winner powerfully piloted by Kiran Rai spared a `neck' to Memory Lane, who comfortably finished more than four lengths ahead of the strongly backed Zaneta who performed like a dud. The upper division of the event was claimed by the favourite Attenborough from Jodha's yard. Kamble produced a copybook effort on the smart winner. Preakness finished second ahead of Safety, who now appears to have improved and it will pay to follow this Sebastian trainee when saddled next.

The James McKeown schooled Suryakrishi piloted by leading pro Srinath came up tops in the Razeen Plate for juveniles, edging out the Mandanna -trained Celeste in a pulse-pounding finish. The winner needed to win the race again in the stewards room following an objection lodged by rider Yash, which was rightly overruled to the delight of the punters who fancied the McKeown filly to put it across Celeste. Mr Starc who looked a trifle gross at the paddock parade finished third and this Dhruv Futnanai ward will prove to be a different proposition next time out.

The Robert Foley-trained Royal Monarch was confidently backed to come up tops in the Grey Gaston Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs. And he did just that romping home in the hands of the promising apprentice Sah Farid Ansari. The topweighted Lordship partnered by B Darshan expectedly finished second behind the winner, while Diamonds And Pearls, recommended a good win and place bet by the right connections managed to save money in place, finishing third ahead of Torbert.

Srinath and James combined to post a double, the strongly fancied The Intimidator proving too good for his seven rivals in the Alaindair Handicap run over a mile. Three Of A Kind followed the winner home, while Fast Play took the third spot. Now that The Intimidator has broken ice it will pay to pull out the big chips from the wallet and punt big on this vastly improved performer, who is certain to provide an encore.
