SKY FALL'S SPEEDY DISPLAY FETCHES HER THE MRC TROPHY

By Usman Rangila | 22 Jan 2023 | MUMBAI

Mr Zavaray S Poonawalla & trainer Dallas Todywalla leading Sky Fall (S Saqlain Up), winner of The Madras Race Club Trophy

Dallas Todywalla nurtured mare Sky Fall took a flying start from the gates and made her rivals dance to her tune over the five-furlong scurry for the Madras Race Club Trophy. Exactly a week ago, Sky Fall was unable to wrest the lead after failing to match Mozelle's initial speed and ended up playing the bridesmaid's role. Entrusted in the hands of S Saqlain on this occasion, Sky Fall (Leitir Mor - Classic Sky) got to reverse the roles as she shot ahead after jumping out swiftly from the gates. With Mozelle and Gazino unable to quicken, Sandesh driven favourite Endeavour tried to measure Sky Fall after warming up in the straight. The sprightly mare however kicked on gamely and won sparingly a length and quarter to Endeavour. Augustus Caesar came with flashy run to end third ahead of Mozelle and Gazino.

An hour earlier, Saqlain steered S Waheed groomed juvenile Believe to a brilliant victory in the YM Chaudhry Memorial Million. Smiles Of Fortune from Malesh Narredu's yard garnered maximum support in the betting on the back of his failed start to finish bid earlier when he was beaten in the shadow of the post by the winner, Waikiki. Ridden by Sandesh, the on-money favourite made a similar attempt but faltered close home as Saqlain urged Believe (Planetaire - Noble Lady) to pierce through the gap between Smiles Of Fortune and Rush. The favourite capitulated far too easily as Believe stormed ahead. The General looked dangerous when he came with a devouring run but failed to overhaul Believe. Rush just about finished third ahead of the winner's late-finishing stablemate Star Gallery and Smiles Of Fortune.

Champion trainer Pesi Shroff led in two facile winners, Hunting Goddess (Territories - Regency) and the maiden Swift (Dabirsim - Love Is Enough), both justifying the public's faith. PS Chouhan had an armchair ride aboard Hunting Goddess, who waited to pounce on leader Soup And Sandwich till she had shot her bolt in the straight. Hunting Goddess then went cruising ahead and won without being fully extended. Soup And Sandwich, Outlander and Superlative followed her home.

Swift, making only her second career appearance after recovering from a setback, proved far too good for her opponents. Ridden by rookie N Bhosale, Swift unleashed a terrific run when the field straightened and collared Intense Belief in the last furlong putting the issue to rest there and then. Intense Belief ended second with M'sarrat and Golden Lioness in close tow.

Lesser fancied than only Willy Wonka, Jerusalem from Malesh Narredu's yard finally graduated from the maiden ranks in the lowest class. Ridden well off the pace by R Ajinkya, Jerusalem made his bid only when Sandesh astride Willy Wonka assumed command after the heads turned for home. Jerusalem (Speaking Of Which - Star Of Harmony) improved with every stride he took and overpowered Willy Wonka close home.

Saqlain would have finished with a treble had Rafaello succeeded in toppling Son Of A Gun in the opening event. As the gates opened for the seven-furlong race, Son Of A Gun and Count Of Savoy fought for the early lead before apprentice Mustakim Alam allowed the latter to call the shots but wore him down with over a furlong still left for home. Before Narendra Lagad saddled Son Of A Gun (Top Class - Indian Serenade) could breathe easy, Saqlain-partnered Rafaello started to gain ground. Mustakim kept his nerves while riding out the piping hot favourite vigorously and eventually found the winning post coming to his rescue. Rafaello fell short by a neck  at the wire.

In an identical finish witnessed later in the day, Charming Star (Kingda Ka - Charmstone) staved off the spirited attack mounted by Scottish Scholar and lasted out to win by a whisker in the hands of Mustakim. Lagad saddled Charming Star had earlier taken charge from leader Perfect Man in the home stretch but was engaged in a fierce duel by Amyn Merchant-piloted Scottish Scholar. Teispes and C'est L'amour finished in the frame.

Favourite Charlie (Planetaire - Miracle Of Love) improved on his previous efforts to earn his maiden win. Bhawani Singh brought him into contention opposite the stands even as Souza and Toussaint were battling it out with Campaign also gaining ground. Charlie accelerated well to register an easy win with Campaign, Mysterious Girl and Time finishing on. CS Jodha-ridden Campaign, when making his bid close home, swerved violently to his right and bumped  Toussaint who leaned on to Souza racing towards the rails. Jodha's careless riding bordered on being dangerous and led to runner up Campaign being disqualified following a stewards enquiry.
