By Ikram Khan | 03 Feb 2023 | BANGALORE

Silvarius (S John up), winner of The Stayers Trial Stakes

On a day most top jockeys including Trevor Patel and Sandesh chose to stay put in Mumbai for the Derby week-end races, John struck it rich recording a treble. The veteran pro opened his account through the Irfan Ghatala schooled Santorino, the even-money favourite producing a winning gallop at the distance post to assume command and put the race to bed in the final furlong. The Irfan Ghatala ward, who has won both his starts this season is certain to complete a hat-trick of wins, when saddled next. Triumphant piloted by Suraj Narredu in his effort to make every post a winning one in the mile long Parfait Amour Trophy failed to match strides with the in-form winner, while Ripple N Storm finished third.

Next astride the five to one shot Silvarius from Arjun Manglorkar's yard, John followed the early leader Karanveer from Pradeep Annaiah's yard for most part of the gruelling mile-and-half trip in the Stayers Trial Stakes, before streaking ahead at the top of the straight and comfortably beating the public rage Evaldo from trainer Prasanna Kumar's yard. The half-money favourite at one stage looked set to collar the leader, but the moment John applied pressure on Silvarius, the Arjun ward quickened well to put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Fire Power partnered by Srinath finished third ahead of Ruling Goddess who continues to disappoint.

In line for a treble, John guiding the fortunes of Nikolina brought the smile back on the face of Prasanna, the public choice powering home in emphatic fashion to register her maiden success this season. Now that Nikolina has broken ice, it will pay to follow her again next time out. Aherne from Imtiaz Khan's yard  surprised most gaining the runner-up berth ahead of Air Display, while last start winner Mystical Merkabah, who was strongly fancied by her connections to record her second straight success, found this company too hot to handle and only managed to complete the frame.

R N Darshan who partnered Aherne helped the Ganapathys return home with a spring in the step, father S Ganapathy and son Aravind leading in winners. Ganapathy led in the seven to one shot Classic Charm in the concluding event, the upper division of the Ellora Caves Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs, while Aravind dropped the biggest bombshell, the ten to one shot Smithsonian from his stables coming up tops in the S M Ramakrishna Rao Memorial Trophy run over a sprint.Smithsonian who started the season on a winning note was withdrawn at the starting gates in his next attempt and pitted against the on-money favourite Crown Consort from Suraj Narredu's yard who was back after a five-month lay-off on Friday, Smithsonian produced his best to stun the followers of form, pegging back the second in demand at the betting ring Queen Spirit, while Crown Consort flopped badly much to the chagrin of all the big bettors who chose to punt big on this filly despite her long absence.

The lower division of the Ellora Caves Plate was claimed by the overwhelming favourite See My Heels who outwitted her eight rivals in the hands of top pro Suraj Narredu. The winner who galloped home, five lengths clear of the second-placed Akasi is set to provide an encore. Advantageously placed in at the scales, Altair finished third ahead of Striking Point who in the hands of the talented Saqlain raced in patches. Bramastram in this event dropped her rider Likith Appu.

Appu, earlier had it easy guiding home the Irfan Ghatala schooled Emma in the opening event, the Indravati Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. Strongly fancied by the insiders and the right connections, Emma stole a march when the race came on a boil and quickly bolted in to the delight of the Irfan camp. The topweighted Activated followed the winner home , while War Trial from Sharath Kumar;s yard, who was fancied strongly in place did well to finish third ahead of Altamonte.

The Sulaiman Attaollahi schooled Impiana was another fancied contestant who powered home in the hands of another promising apprentice Alex Rozario. The winner, backed to the exclusion of her 10 rivals provided Rozario an arm-chair ride to success and on the strength of this effort is certain to win again when saddled next. Lesser fancied Klockner gained the runner-up spot in the hands of Srinath, while all that the well-backed Konabos did was finish a tame third ahead of Breeze Bluster.

In the Cobweb Plate for maiden juveniles, the five to one shot Roman Spirit from trainer Dominic's yard produced a winning gallop at the all-important end to to spoil Fast Pace's party, The runner-up from Pradeep Annaiah's yard was a medium of a king-sized gamble, but the good looking son of Western Aristocrat missed the bus, failing in her attempt to overhaul the Dominic ward who had benefited most from a good run under his belt. Rainbow Dreamer finished third ahead of the Arjun Manglorkar schooled Greenwich who will prove to be a different proposition in her next start.
