MIRRA WEAVES A FAIRY-TALE ENDING FOR THE INDIAN DERBY

Ms Ameeta Mehra & trainer Arjun Mangalorkar leading Mirra (Antony Raj S Up), winner of The Indian Derby (Gr.1)

As it often happens, the result of this year's Indian Derby came as an anti-climax of sorts for the spectators when the Bangalore-challenger Mirra upset the applecart of both King's Ransom and Supernatural at the Mahalaxmi racetrack on Sunday evening. Nonetheless, Mirra won the hearts of all those in attendance with her gutsy performance as she dipped into her reserves to repel King's Ransom's onslaught in the shadow of the winning post. Be it owner-breeder Ameeta Mehra, trainer Arjun Mangalorkar or jockey Antony Raj, Mirra's success was nothing short of a fairy-tale ending for everyone involved with filly. All had their moment in the sun especially Mangalorkar and Antony, who realised their dream of winning India's biggest horseracing event. Usha Stud Farm, on the other hand, had the unique distinction of having bred all the horses which took the first four placings on the judge's board.

When an usually large field of eighteen Derby contestants was flagged off by the starter, Mirra was comfortably settled in the mid-pack as the pretenders performed their duty of setting the early pace. The lead changed hands at regular intervals and finally it was Shamrock who brought the field into the view for the last time. Ravishing Form flattered briefly before Antony pulled Mirra out from the inner rails to overhaul him with a furlong and half left for home. Mirra then set sails for the winning post while PS Chouhan was forced to bring King's Ransom on the extreme wide to skirt the front-runners and launch his assault. King's Ransom unleashed a devouring run and it appeared for a fleeting moment that she would tackle Mirra. But Antony was in no mood to give up and his last-ditch effort spurred Mirra to a length victory over King's Ransom. Wall Street who made his bid when coming the shortest way failed to match the winner's brilliance but ended a gratifying third ahead of Imperial Power.

Without taking away any credit from Mirra, it must be mentioned that all the eight horses which finished behind Mirra were drawn very wide and had a bunch of no-hopers running in horizontal line ahead, which made their task of getting into a position from where they could make their final move quite tedious.

He may have not added another featjer to his classics' cap but Pesi did succeed in saddling a fine treble on the Derby day. The bay filly Jamari made a smashing debut in the day's curtain raiser after the withdrawal of her fancied stablemate Capitolium. Trevor Patel-piloted Jamari (Cougar Mountain- Glyndebourne) took charge of the running shortly after the gates opened and was a winner at every post of the mile trip. Runner up Smiles Of Fortune, who was ridden off the pace on this occasion, was in a futile chase of the winner in the straight as Jamali drew away from her rivals and was eased up long way from home. Granpar ran on to finish third ahead of the exhausted Big Red.

The grey gelding Northern Lights outwitted hot favourite Ahead Of My Time to lift the Diego Rivera Trophy. Northern Lights ran in close attendance of Coeur De Lion and Kamilah till final turn where Chouhan switched gears and the grey stole a march over his rivals in the last two furlongs. Northern Lights (Lethal Force - Prescription) had a two-length cushion when A Sandesh threw his challenge astride Ahead Of My Time and the big striding grey cashed on it as he skipped away to keep the favourite at bay. Coeur De Lion fought valiantly till the end before finishing a neck behind the runner up.

Bottom-weighted Emperor Roderic made a winning appearance in the Gromor Coromandel Million. C Umesh kept Emperor Roderic a handy fourth as stablemate Arcana headed the field with Cellino and Son Of A Gun in pursuit. Umesh gave Emperor Roderic his head as the field straightened for home and overhauled the leaders in a trice. The son of Roderic O'Connor out of Mine Forever kept going thereafter and won comfortably from the late finishing Raffaello and Magileto. Flying Scotsman ended fourth.

Karthik Ganapathy saddled Juliette brooked no opposition from her rivals in the D & A Realty sponsored Eclipse Stakes of India (Gr.2) as she avenged her defeat at the hands of Forest Flame at Pune. Blazing Bay set the perfect pace for his barn mate and did the entire running till the field turned for home. Sandesh powered Forest Flame to assume command after Blazing Bay had shot his bolts but had Juliette (Musketier - Gimmesumsugar) hot on her heels when CS Jodha pressed the grey into action. With about two furlongs left for the wire, the grey mare came with raking strides to go past Forest Flame and put the issue to rest. Truly Epic finished on to be third ahead of In Contention.

Making his fourth career appearance, Dallas Todywalla schooled Irish Gold (Roderic O'Connor - Irish Bailey) romped home in the Sir Homi Mehta Breeders Produce Stakes. Ridden in check by S Saqlain, Irish Gold let Endurance call the early shots but he surged ahead once the field the straightened for home and the race was all over bar the shouting. Sea The Sun, who graced the wrong end of the field till the race came to a boil, warmed up late and took the runner up slot ahead of Dream Alliance and Waikiki. With this educative run, Sea The Sun is not likely to linger in the maiden ranks for long.

Fighton from AM Jadhav's yard had advertised his fitness when he had finished a flying second to Portofino Bay on debut and he lived up to promise shown in that run. Fighton (US Navy Flag - Starletina) ridden by NS Parmar won untroubled after making every post of six furlong journey for BK Rattonsey Memorial Maiden Multi-Million a winning one. The General, Dream Alliance and She's A Teaser followed him home.

San Salvatore (Win Legend - Aksinya), though neglected in the betting, won start to finish over the seven furlong trip. K Nazil astride the Altamash Ahmed trained San Salvatore found himself in the front at start and the bay gelding relished his role as he went on to register a comfortable win over Inamorata, who found her mooring quite late as the flood lights were dimmed due to prevailing smog. Lord Fenecia and My Princess completed the frame.

The last race of the day was cancelled in view of the concerns raised by the jockeys.
