By Ikram Khan | 10 Feb 2023 | CHENNAI

Trainer R Ramanathan leading Night Hunt (Inayat Up), winner of THe Running Flame Handicap

Two shock winners from trainer Ramanathan's yard floored the followers of form on Friday. The 15 to one rankoutsider Night Hunt piloted by the promising five-kilo claimer Inayat produced an astounding gallop in the run in home to reign supreme in the Running Flame Handicap, while the six to one shot Fabulous Show in the hands of Amit powered home in the concluding event, the Hotstepper Handicap.

A model of consistency, Kay Star from Anil Kumar's yard, who had finished second behind Queenstown in his last effort was fancied most in the plum event run over a sprint. The public choice piloted by Brisson again only managed to gain the runner-up berth, Night Hunt shooting past the leader Wind Symbol to romp home in style. Kay Star warmed up late to edge out Spectacle and Wind Symbol. The winner, it must be mentioned won without really extending himself and it will pay to keep an eye on this old at tooth eight-year-old, who has not lost zest for racing.

Last start winner Stern Maiden garnered the maximum support in the final event, most railbirds confident that the Ajith Kumar ward will provide an encore. Much to the disappointment of all the favourite punters the overwhelming favourite failed to raise a winning gallop and as a result failed to save even money in place. When the race came on a boil, lesser fancied Shadow Of Love from Mandanna's yard assumed command and posed like a winner before Fabulous Show unleashed a sparkling turn of foot in the final furlong to snath the verdict, a `neck' separating her from Shadow Of Love at the shadow of the winning post. Icy River finished a suggestive third and it will pay to keep an eye on this Uthaiah ward in the weeks ahead.

Earlier, the Krishna schooled Regal Kid after following the strongly supported favourite Renzaccio for most part of the 1100 metres trip in the opening event, the Khardungla Handicap, shot ahead at the top of the straight and cantered home in emphatic fashion. Little Wonder finished second ahead of Kikata, who only managed to save money in place, while Prince Striker completed the frame.

The topweighted Full Of Surprise from Vishesh's yard was confidently supported by insiders and the right connections in the CBTF On-Line Marina Beach Trophy and the well-backed favourite provided leading pro Yash Narredu an arm-chair ride to success, bolting in to the delight of all her supporters who touted her as a `moral certainty'. Haran in his attempt to make every post a winning one found the favourite too hot to handle, but nevertheless finished second ahead of Antigua.

After his victory on Full Of Surprise, Yash much to the chagrin of his supporters failed to make an impression while guiding the fortunes of the public choice Turf Melody in the next event, the Sadlers Wells Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs. The favourite who had finished a creditable second behind Wisaka in her last start failed to display her true potential and eventually
finished in the ruck. The five to one shot Empress Royal from lady trainer Rupa's yard piloted by Sah Farid Ansari proved too good sparing more than four lengths to the second placed Herring, while Turf Melody finished down the field.

The Sebastian-trained Supreme Dance was fancied most in the Temerity Handicap run over a mile and the good looking dark bay gelding made every post a winning one in the hands of Sai Kumar who produced a copybook race on the smart winner, who is set to provide an encore. Second in demand at betting ring, Rubirosa did pose a threat at the top of the straight, but the moment Sai Kumar reminded the public rage of the task ahead, the Sebastian ward quickened well to put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong.
