ANZAC PIPERNAL WINS JUVENILE MILLION

By Ikram Khan | 17 Feb 2023 | BANGALORE

Trainer S Dominic leading Anzac Pipernal (S Saqlain up) winner of the Bangalore Juvenile Million (Gr.3)

The card looked tricky and punters rightly exercised caution understanding that Stormy Ocean apart, the rest of the half-dozen favourites lacked the form and fitness and more importantly the required potential to successfully carry the money bags home. After the even-money favourite Stormy Ocean from trainer Darius Byramji's yard confidently piloted by Imran Chisty struck it rich in the action before the Invitation Cup week-end, Devils Magic from Neil Devaney's stable justified favouritism in the Dr.T Thimmaiah Memorial Trophy. Chisty guided the fortunes of this public choice before he packed punch on the ten to one shot Lycurgus in the Sharavathi Plate to register a grand treble.

Stormy Ocean and Devils Magic were the only two favourites, who justified their top billing and from the results obtained it was clear that the decision of the big bettors to go easy on what appeared a dicey card was a good one and they can now plan and work out the many permutations and combinations to crack the pot of gold on the first Saturday and Sunday of March.

The Narayan Gowda `magic' stunned the followers of form  in the opening event, the lower division of the Sunday Silence Plate. Twilight Flame, who had finished down the field in all his nine starts including six in the summer season appeared to have a turbo engine fitted this time out, the five-year-old grey hitting the front from the word go in the hands of Ryan Ahmed and never letting the initiative slip. The big improvement both in attitude and performance shocked the railbirds. The huge transformation in only seven days from his last down the field exercise on Feb 10, to making every post a winning one on Friday defied logic. Most old hats in the game cried foul, while the knowledgeable pointed out that this is just not possible and calls for an explanation. The shock winner paid a whopping dividend, Rs, 1,145 on a tenner at the tote window and this makes it clear that none gave the Narayan Gowda ward a chance after his nine pathetic efforts before Gowda's magic wand shockingly turned a donkey into a horse on this day. The Lokanath schooled Sling Shot who garnered maximum support in this event performed below par and failed to even save money in place. Ultimate Chance from Dominic's yard gained the runner-up berth ahead of the lesser fancied Klockner, while Baroness after chasing Twilight Flame for most part of the seven furlongs trip only managed to complete the frame.

After Sling Shot from his yard let down large following in the opener, Memorable Time was one other from Lokanath's yard who took a lot of good money down the drain, the overwhelming favourite finishing a tame third behind the winner Thunderstruck from Sharath Kumar's yard partnered by Arvind Kumar and the runner-up My Vision piloted by Rayan Ahmed who dropped the biggest bombshell in the opening event. Memorable Time tracked the run-away leader Thunderstruck all through the mile long trip before the winner kicked clear at the top of the straight and held on gamely to score from My Vision.

After the first two results pushed the punters back against the wall, the strongly fancied Stormy Ocean much to the relief of the favourite punters came out on top in the Charminar Plate run over a distance of nine furlongs. Chisty produced a copybook effort on the winner, staying cool and composed while Solid Power set a cracking pace in the hands of Saqlain. Chisty only reminded Stormy Ocean of the task ahead at the distance post and the moment Stormy Ocean was asked to change gears, the Darius ward to the delight of his supporters did just that and it was all over bar the shouting. Triumphant finished second ahead of Solid Power, while Roman Power only managed to complete the frame.

The Bangalore Juvenile Million only attracted four runners and after Sassy from from Sulaiman's yard opted out, only three came under the starter's flag for the plum. Cat Whiskers from Aravind Ganapathy's yard and Anzac Pipernal from the stables of Dominic were fancied strongly by their respective camps. The grey filly in the hands of the talented Saqlain proved too good cantering home without unduly being extended while sparing a good six lengths to Cat Whiskers, who never could match strides with the impressive winner. All credit to Dominic for sending out Anzac Pipernal spot on and the daughter of Sir Cecil made her master proud recording her second win from three starts and Dominic, it must be mentioned has time and again attained good results from the low cost youngsters picked up by his owners. Anzac Pipernal is a goodtype of youngster and she will complete a hat-trick of wins if Dominic chooses to test her again against better quality juveniles in the month ahead.

Despite the fact that Divine Ray from Darius Byramji's yard was back after a five-month lay-off and he looked a trifle gross at the paddock, the punters surprisingly chose to pin their hopes on the topweight in the Sharavathi Plate and it came as no surprise when the favourite failed to make the board after struggling to gain a forward position all through the seven furlongs trip. Ignored in the betting ring, last start winner Lycurgus from Sharath Kumar's yard produced another fine effort to help Chisty record a treble, powering home in style to register his second straight victory. Peluche finished second ahead of the second in demand at the betting ring Flying Quest, while Golden Vision caught the Eye gaining the fourth place ahead of stablemate See My Heels.

The six to one shot Beldona piloted by leading pro Srinath produced a sparkling gallop in the final furlong to overhaul Hope Island and come up tops in the concluding event, the lower division of the Sunday Silence Plate. Dragon's Gold from Parvati Byramji's yard topped the betting board but he failed to make an impression, quickly dropping out of contention when the race came on a boil. Beldona's smart effort helped Sharath Kumar record a treble and share the professional honours with Chisty on a day most lesser fancied contestants waltzed to victory.
