PERFECT BLEND WINS NANI AGRO MILLION

By Ikram Khan | 18 Feb 2023 | CHENNAI

For the second day running, favourites continued to take a back seat at Guindy. On Friday, the Bangalore raider Bold Act and Windermere were the only two public choices who justified their top billing and back the next day, Dun It Again and Lady Luck were the only two fancied contestants who entered the winners' circle. The half-money favourite Soft Whisper from B Suresh's yard on the strength of her impressive debut, second behind Fondness Of You, was backed to the exclusion of her seven rivals in the Nani Agro Million, but the public rage failed to match strides with the Saddam Iqbal schooled juvenile Perfect Blend and debutant Jahzara from James McKeown's yard. The former struck it rich in his fourth attempt, while Jahzara served notice of her potential in her maiden exercise, finishing second ahead of Soft Whisper. It is no secret that trainer B Suresh has struck a bad patch, only five winners from a total of 134 runners so far this season and this includes a number of top fancies who have flopped when they topped the betting board and looked good to score.

After the talented Saqlain guiding the fortunes of Soft Whisper hit the front in his effort to make every post a winning one, the short-priced favourite was seen travelling nice and easy before she came under pressure from Jahzara piloted by Sandesh and even before Jahzara could gain control, the leading `Knight' Yash Narredu astride Perfect Blend stormed up to steal a march and quickly put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong.

Yesterday it was Beauty Of The Turf and on Saturday it was Turf Beauty who made lady trainer Rupa proud.winning the OTA Trophy run over a distance of nine furlongs.  The ten to one shot piloted by the promising apprentice Sah Farid Ansari hit the front soon after the seven runners came under the starter's flag and never let the initiative slip, pegging back the second in demand at the betting ring Kings Walk, another from B Suresh's yard who failed to enter the winners' circle. The favourite Sheer Elegance from trainer Ramanathan's yard raced in patches and eventually finished fourth behind Masterpiece, stablemate of Kings Walk.

Purple Prince on the strength of his pleasing performances in the morning trials opened the favourite in the Air Force Trophy before the price on the Suresh ward drifted badly from (12/10) to (2/1). The speedy customer in the hands of Sai Kumar called the shots for the first five furlongs before he ran out of gas in the final furlong and eventually finished in the ruck. The lesser fancied Full Of Surprise from trainer Vishesh's yard gained the day edging out Santamarina Star in a close finish, while Pappa Rich did well to save money in place.

Vishesh, who is enjoying a good season later struck through the top choice Dun It Again, who recorded his second straight success in the hands of apprentice Alex Rozario. The winner was fancied most by the insiders and the right connections and the in-form performer readily produced another fine effort to serve notice of his potential. Shez R Star from Anil Kumar's yard `nosed' out the other fancied runner Romualdo, while Grandiose completed the frame. Dun It Again is in fine nick and is set to register a hat-trick when saddled next.

In the opening event, the Police Trophy, Vishesh and Rozario combination lost out, the topweighted Driftwood Pacific failing to carry the public purse to victory in a pulse-pounding 1000 metres dash. The lesser fancied Regal Kid from Krishna's yard partnered by the five-kilo claimer Koshi Kumar came up tops edging out the eight to one shot Tifosi by the proverbial whisker and Tifosi in turn beat Driftwood Pacific by the shortest of margins in a fire to the wire finish.

The Ramanathan-trained Lady Luck and Safety from the stables of Sebastian topped the betting board in the final event, the Navy Trophy before money came pouring in on Lady Luck and the `lady' was installed firm favourite minutes before the start. Amit astride the public choice chose to hit the front and dominate the proceeding in the seven furlongs event. Arch rival Safety in the hands of apprentice Inayat followed the leader for most part of the journey before Lady Luck kicked clear at the top of the straight and quickly put the race to bed in the final furlong. Black Label finished on purposefully at end to gain the runner-up berth ahead of Zaneta, while Safety failed to even save money in place. Lady Luck, it must be mentioned is on top of her game and is set to provide an encore.
