QUEENSTOWN WINS FEATURE IN FINE STYLE

By Ikram Khan | 24 Feb 2023 | CHENNAI

Mr Sarosh Mody and trainer Neil Darashah leading Queenstown (K G Likith Appu up), winner of The Tamilnadu Race Horse Owners Association Trophy

Form played true on the penultimate day of the season and the railbirds returned home, most satisfied with the favourable results at Guindy on Friday. The Bangalore challenger Queenstown from Neil Darashah's yard proved too good in the Tamil Nadu Race Horse Owners' Association Trophy, the plum event run over 1100 metres. The winner, who looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring opened a short-priced favourite (80/100) before the price on the public choice drifted alarmingly (2/1) despite the fact that the Neil ward on the strength of his last victory at this centre looked set to provide an encore. The promising Bengaluru apprentice Likith Appu, who had partnered Queenstown in her last essay confidently guided home the Neil ward without any fuss, storming past the second in demand at the betting ring Kay Star at the distance post before putting the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Kay Star piloted by leading pro Srinath hung on to gain the runner-up spot ahead of Golden Marina who was seen finishing on fastest at end.

The principal added attraction, the S Rangarajan Memorial Trophy split into two divisions saw the strongly supported Swarga come up tops in the upper division, while another favourite Asio from Deepesh Narredu's yard reigned supreme in  the lower division. Third behind the Mysore raider Brave Trooper and Miss Allure in his last essay, Swarga from Sebastian's yard was a medium of a king-sized gamble, backed down from (7/2) to (6/4). And the heavily backed contestant to the delight of his supporters produced a sparkling gallop at the all-important end to romp home in fine style. Dame Fonteyn from James McKeown's yard followed Swarga home, while the Suresh schooled Multiwave managed to save place money.

Asio looked set to shed his maiden status after three starts. The Deepesh ward, who had caught the eye while finishing a notable third behind the winner Fondness Of You and Soft Whisper in his last essay rightly garnered the maximum support in this moderate set of juveniles and with the champion saddle artiste Yash Narredu to guide his fortunes, the winner really didn't need to push himself to enter the winners' circle. Smash Shot from Anil Kumar's yard finished second ahead of Hall Of Grace, while Supreme Grandeur despite looking a trifle gross in her debut made a favourable impression, completing the frame.

Spurred by the success of Asio, Deepesh and Yash struck again through Terminator in the upper division of the Adjudicate Handicap run over a mile. The favourite tracked the nohoper Grandiose and Sweet Fragrance for most part of the trip before Yash reminded Terminator of the task ahead at the top of the straight and the winner readily produced a winning gallop to edge out Rubert and the lesser fancied Ganton in a close finish. This was Terminator's third success this season and all credit to Deepesh for cleverly placing him and obtaining the desired result. Vulcanic on the strength of his victory in his last attempt had his share of followers, but the Adhirajsingh Jodha ward piloted by apprentice Farid Ansari never posed a threat, surprisingly failing to reproduce his last effort.

The McKeown schooled Loch Lomond was fancied most in the lower division and the overwhelming favourite in the hands of Hindu Singh powered home without extending himself. Ibrahimovic finished on well at end to gain the runner-up berth ahead of Sonic Dash. The winner is in fine nick and it will pay to follow him if his connections choose to take him to the Blue Mountains.

In a pulse-pounding finish, the six to one shot Dazzling Princess from Krishna's yard edged out the favourite Great Spirit by the shortest of margins in the opening event, the Loyal Prince Handicap run over a distance of 1000 metres, The winner piloted by Gaurav Singh after failing to make an impression at Pune and Mumbai appears to have adapted well to the change and now that the `Princess' has broken ice, it will pay to keep an eye on  this Krishna trainee at Udhagamandalam. Choice did well to finish third ahead of the topweighted Prince Purple who again failed to make a mark and is best left ignored.

The Mandanna schooled Reign Of Terror, who stunned Ganton in his last start registered his second straight success, coming up trumps in the Cape Comorin Handicap run over a mile. Apprentice Dharshan had it easy on the in-form winner, who donkey-licked his 11 rivals including the well supported Mastery from Jodja's yard. The public choice finished a tame third behind Cedar Wood who followed the winner home. Reign Of Terror is in rousing form and is certain to complete a hat-trick of wins at Udhagamandalam.
