FIRST DAY, FIRST SHOW WAS A HIT

By Ikram Khan | 01 Apr 2023 | OOTY

Trainer B Suresh leading Royal Icon (P Sai Kumar Up), winner of The Nilgiris Muncipality Trophy Div-1

The first day, first show at the Blue Mountains was satisfactory, a good number of fancied runners nailing bold colours to the mast before a sharp shower after the sixth race forced the stewards of the club to cancel the last two events.

The top two saddle artistes, P. Sai kumar and Umesh started the season on a winning note, the former recording a fine treble, while Umesh booted home two winners. Saikumar, who is a force to reckon with on this tricky track, opened his account on the B Suresh schooled Royal Icon, who proved too good in the upper division of the Nilgiris Municipality Trophy run opver a sprint. The winner, who opened favourite in the betting ring soon was offered at (5/2), money pouring in on the Deepesh Narredu schooled Armoury. But the strongly fancied public choice was never equal to the task and much to the disappointment of her supporters finished off the frame. Royal Icon tracked the leader Knotty Wonder for most part of the trip before the Suresh ward assumed command approaching the final curve and then detonated her nine rivals without really working up a sweat. Knotty Wonder despite looking a trifle gross at the parade ring did well to finish second, while Multicrown managed to save money in place. Now that Royal Icon has broken ice, she is likely to add to her debut success in the weeks ahead.

Next astride the second in demand at the betting ring, Something Royal from Sebastian's yard, Saikumar needed to relentlessly drive the lazy Sebastian ward to get into her stride and the moment she started to move, it was evident that she would collar the front running favourite Moriset at the top of the straight. And that's exactly what happened, the second favourite breezing past Moriset to reign supreme in the Great Spectacle Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs.

Something Royal on the strength of this performance, it is needless to mention will be fancying to make her presence felt in the 1000 Guineas. In line for a treble, Glorious Grace, another from the stables of Sebastian was fancied sweetly by the insiders and the right connections to upset the applecart of the favourite Rubirosa in the Rosy Cheeks Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs. And the talented filly in the hands of Saikumar produced a sparkling gallop in the final furlong to edge out the topweighted public choice close home to the delight of the Sebastian camp. Kings Walk finished third, while Loch Lomond, who failed to keep pace, it was clear was only getting a feel of the track before her connections target her to pick up a race in the weeks ahead.

Umesh who loves to parade his skills on this track, produced a neat copybook effort on the well-supported Seminole Wind in the lower division of the Nilgiris Municipality Trophy run over a sprint. The public choice tracked the run-away leader Happiness for most part of the six furlongs trip before Umesh reminded the James McKeown trainee of the task ahead at the distance post and the public choice responding well to her master's call quickly put the race to bed in the final furlong. Stablemate Neziah caught the eye while gaining the runner-up berth ahead of Happiness who finished in the money despite his run-away effort.

Spurred by the success on Seminole Wind, Umesh guided home the four to one shot Wood Art in the Kalatti Handicap run over a distance of 1300 metres. In what was a very open affair, Wood Art, Windsor Walk and the topweighted Bohemian Star from Rupa's yard topped the betting board before Wood Art proved too good to the delight of trainer Uthaiah. The winner is in fine nick and is likely to provide an encore.

In the opening event, the Queen Of The Hills Handicap, the on-money favourite Sheer Rocks from the stables of Sebastian was surprised close home by the seven to one shot Santamarina Star piloted by Amit. The public rage at one stage looked well set to start the season on a winning note before Santamarina Star devoured acres of ground in the  `run in' home to edge out the piping hot favourite at the shadow of the winning post. Celeste finished third, while Speculation, after making all the running, only managed to complete the frame.
