SURESH MAINTAINS WINNING STREAK

Two objections. Two stewards enquiries following two jockeys failing to weigh in after the race, kept the mandarins of the Udhagamandalam Racing Club busy and the rulings on the two protests were appreciated, both by the knowledgeable and old hats in the game, who made no secret of their opinion that the men in the stewards room viewed the protest with clarity and authority. The decision to penalise Mohit Singh for careless riding, while allowing his win on the public choice Sinatra to stand and later quickly throwing out what appeared a frivolous objection lodged by Farhan Alam, the rider of second placed Windsor Walk against the winner Strombosis piloted by Manikandan in the concluding event, the Chelandry Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs was commendable.

Earlier, the long shot Touch Of Fury partnered by Salman Khan in the opening event, the Black Ray Handicap was disqualified following her rider failing to weigh in and in the next event, Kaviraj astride the topweight Queen Of Fame, who had finished fifth in the Tillywhim Handicap was disqualified for the same offence, It is needless to mention that the two careless professionals will be fined for their negligence, but what is important in this cases is that the men exercising the vigil must impose strict sanctions on the jockeys, who must understand that the weighing in procedure is mandatory and the pros dutifully must complete the exercise, be it a winner or a loser.

Now coming to racing, trainer B Suresh is enjoying a fine run at the Blue Mountains, clear on top of the trainers' leader board with a grand treble on Saturday. The top pro, who struck a bad patch at Chennai appears to have hit the high road and his horses are making it look easy, as easy as sweeping autumn leaves from the garden path. The top pro opened his account on Zucardi in the upper division of the Donnette Handicap run over a sprint. The public choice piloted by leading pro Umesh, hit the front soon after the field of eight runners came under the starter's flag and never let the initiative slip romping home nice and easy to the delight of her supporters. The lesser fancied Lebua followed the winner home, while Dazzling Princess saved money in place.

Next in the lower division, Sinatra from his yard was the overwhelming public choice after he finished a creditable second behind Royal Baron in his last start. The fact that Royal Baron won again boosted the stock of the Suresh ward and soon the followers of form went bang-bang in the ring before they were walking with a spring in their step to the payment collection window of the bookmakers. But after winning Sinatra had to win the race again in the stewards room following a protest lodged by Amit, rider of the second placed Presto Power for cutting across and taking his ground and as a result he could  not ride out his mount in the final stages of the race. It was a valid objection. Mohit Singh, it was clear had failed to keep a straight course in the final furlong, but considering the fact that Sinatra was clearly travelling better of the two, the chief stipendiary steward and handicapper and the stewards rightly imposed a fine on the offender.

In line for  a popular treble, Kings Walk from Suresh's yard had the best credentials in the lower division of the Simon's Shoes Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs. The well-backed favourite, who had impressed most while finishing a good second behind Star Symbol in his last essay had it easy, Sai Kumar guiding him home without really raising a sweat. Amber Lightning again finished second, but his turn will come soon taking into account that in this game consistency is duly rewarded and for this Foley ward, third time could prove lucky and hence it will pay to strongly support him when saddled next.

The lower division of the event was claimed by the five to one shot Ibrahimovic from Ajith Kumar's yard partnered by Kaviraj. The winner who looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring stole a march when the heads turned for home and gallantly pegged back the pipping hot favourite Lady Luck. The winner drifted out a trifle in the closing stage of the race, but much to the relief of his connections he didn't hamper the progress of Lady Luck. Amit guiding the fortunes of the public choice could have come out on top had he been more alert and made his final assault a little early. He made his move after Kaviraj had switched gears and this is what really separated the winner from the loser.

The ten to one shot Strombosis from Saddam Iqbal's yard piloted in determined fashion by Manikandan made every post a winning one in the Chelandry Handicap. Another lesser fancied contestant Windsor Walk followed the winner and soon his pilot Farhan Alam lodged an objection against Manikandan for continuously shifting in and out and stopping his progress in the straight. It was clear that Farhan Alam was only taking a chance and it simply fell flat in front of the stewards who quickly overruled it. Second in demand at the betting ring, Choice finished third, while the last start winner Helen Of Troy, who was fancied to provide an encore failed to even save money in place.

The five to one shot Royal Treasure from Robert Foley's yard shocked the followers of form winning the Tillywhim Handicap run over a mile in a canter. The winner in her last effort 20 days ago had finished 20 lengths behind the Rupa-trained Wonderful Era, who had gone down fighting to Mystic Zlatan. Wonderful Era on that performance was rightly fancied to score, but how did Royal Treasure make up 20 lengths and go on to beat Wonderful Era by more than four lengths in only their next head-to-head clash defies logic. It simply was a clear case of enhanced performance that floored the punters and Robert has some explaining to do. Royal Treasure couldn't have made up 20 lengths unless Robert fitted a turbo engine and the stewards will need to look into this eye-popping case.
