PIRATE’S LOVE WINS MAY DAY TROPHY

By Ikram Khan | 30 Apr 2023 | OOTY

Presentation ceremony of The May Day Trophy

On a day form played truant, many fancied runners taking a back seat, the followers of form returned home with a big hole in the pocket. Only two favourites and one well supported second choice justified the ranking and rating, while five lesser fancied contestants waltzed to victory including the 20 to one shot War Emblem from Krishna's yard, who dropped the biggest bombshell, coming up tops in the Simon Lass Handicap. Zaneta from B Suresh's yard, who is enjoying a fine run under the cool summer sun opened the favourite in this event before money came pouring in on the Sebastian schooled Current View piloted by apprentice jockey Inayat. The top weight after stealing a march in the final furlong looked set to score before Farhan Alam astride War Emblem packed punch and the rankoutsider responding gamely to his master's call produced a sparkling gallop at the all-important end to zoom past the public choice and floor the punters. Mr Mozart finished third ahead of Sacre Couer, while Zaneta, who jumped out awkwardly from the gates failed to display her true potential. Queen Anula was withdrawn before the nine runners came into the parade ring and this Ajith Kumar trainee is likely to make a favourable impression in the weeks ahead taking into account that she is blazing the trial track.

Trainer Vishesh and Ramanathan shared the professional honours with jockeys Umesh and Amit, recording a double apiece. Vishesh led in Pirate's Love, a ten to one shocker in the May Day Trophy, the plum event run over a sprint before landing a successful coup on the quietly and sweetly fancied fancied Dun It Again. Ramanathan struck through Conscious Keeper in the opening event before signing off in style, the heavily backed Golden Marina edging out Star Symbol close home in the concluding event.

The top weighted Fernet Branca garnered the maximum support in the plum event. The Ajith Kumar ward, who looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring after jumping out well in the sprint affair needlessly kept travelling wide and soon it was clear that the overwhelming public choice was not in the hunt. The fact that Mukesh Kumar made no attempt to stop Fernet Branca from shifting out badly to the outer track calls for an explanation. It is learnt that the stewards have opened an enquiry into the running and riding of Mukesh on Fernet Branca and going by what one got to witness, Mukesh is in trouble. Pirate's Love partnered by the five-kilo claimer Gagandeep shot ahead close home to enter the winners' circle ahead of the second in demand at the betting ring Senora Bianca, while Katahdin from the stables of Saddam Iqbal surprised many followers of form finishing third ahead of Beethovan.

Spurred by the success, Vishesh's camp strongly fancied Dun It Again in the upper division of the Romantic Warrior Handicap run over a distance of 1300 metres.  And the game galloper in the hands of Nazer-Ul-Alam produced his best to edge out Glorious Destiny and Rays Of Sun in a thrilling finish. The Krishna schooled Rays Of Sun could have gained the day if his pilot Ashhad Asbar had gained a favourable position early on in the race. The Krishna ward was seen finishing on fastest at end, but that was just not good enough to stop Nazerul  and Dun It Again provide Vishesh a big reason to smile.

The lower division of the event was claimed by Golden Marina, who justified the confidence of supporters powering through to edge out Star Symbol and the second choice Diamond And Pearls at the shadow of the winning post. Constant Variable, who finished fourth looked a trifle gross at the paddock and this Parmar ward will prove to be a different proposition next time out.

The Parmar schooled Marshall was fancied most in the opening event, the Luxembourg Handicap run over a sprint, but the favourite failed to match strides with the smart winner Conscious Keeper, who made every post a winning one in the hands of Amit. Daiyamondo did well to gain the runner-up berth ahead of Marshall who was a beaten horse even before the race came on a boil.

The Suresh schooled Soft Whisper donkey-licked her seven rivals in the lower division of the Vadeni Plate, while the well fancied Gold Fame from James McKeown's yard came up trumps in the upper division. Gold Fame and Multiwave topped the betting board, but the latter, who went down close home in his last essay performed below par much to the disappointment of his supporters. Happiness in the hands of Brisson hit the front and called the shots for most part of the sprint trip before Gold Fame setalight by Umesh produced a good gallop to romp home a deserving winner.
