By Ikram Khan | 14 May 2023 | OOTY

Trainer B Suresh leading Star Symbol (Mohit Singh up) winner of the Madras Regimental Centre Challenge Trophy

The talented saddle artiste Amit, who has made Chennai his base after shifting from Mumbai recorded a grand treble on Sunday. The vastly improved performer, who is enjoying a good run under the cool Ooty sun first struck it rich on the eight to one shot Undeniable competing in the Nathu La Handicap. The P Krishna schooled Excellent Star on the strength of his eye-catching effort in his last start, second behind Danny's Girl rightly opened the favourite before the price on the Krishna ward surprisingly drifted out to (5/2) from (16/10). The punters smelling a rat exercised caution and chose to stay away and the decision proved good, the public choice failing to make the board. The favourite in the seven furlong journey was never in a challenging position to stake his claim and soon it was clear that the fancied contestant was not in the hunt. Undeniable making steady progress all through the backstretch assumed command at the top of the straight and held on gamely to peg back the Vishesh-trained Cloud Jumper, who was seen finishing on fastest at end. Dancing Green finished third ahead of Grand Royal, while Excellent Star finished in the ruck.

Astride the well fancied Velu Nachiyar from Saddam Iqbal's yard competing in the Field Marshal Manekshaw Trophy run over a sprint, Amit pushed the overwhelming public choice to the front soon after the eight youngsters came under the starter's flag and the filly striding nice and easy never let the initiative slip, powering home without unduly extending herself. Second in demand at the betting ring, Fashionista gained the runner-up berth ahead of the Rupa schooled Relic Warrior. This Rupa trainee appears to have made the required improvement to make his mark and it will pay to support him, when saddled next.

In line for a treble, Amit guiding the fortunes of Golden Marina, who he successfully partnered in her last start looked confident again, taking into account that the Ramanathan ward looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring, indicating that with a winning run under her belt she was ready to provide an encore competing in the lower division of the Madras Regimental Centre Challenge Trophy . Golden Marina to the delight of her supporters did just that to record her second straight success and that helped punters return home with a pep in the step and spring in their stride. Constant Variable gained the runner-up ahead of Karadeniz. It will pay to follow, both the runners, who followed Golden Marina home taking into account that Golden Marina is set to complete a hat-trick of wins, when saddled next in the higher class.

The upper division of the event was claimed by the second favourite Star Symbol piloted by Mohit Singh. The winner who had finished second behind Golden Marina in his last start went one better and that helped Suresh register a double after leading in Gutsy later in the upper division of the Field Marshal Manekshaw Trophy.

Earlier, the seven to one shot Emperor Charmavat from Saddam Iqbal's yard proved too good in the opening event, the Andaman Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs. The topweight in the hands of Brisson stole a march at the top of the straight and quickly put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Kikata from Anil Kumar's yard and the Fahad Khan-trained Black Label garnered maximum support in what looked a very open affair. The former finished second behind the winner, while Black Label failed to even save money in place. Emperor Charmavat appears on top of his game and is set to score again provided his connections quickly and judiciously place him in the higher class.

The topweighted Soft Whisper from the stables of B Suresh after her resounding success in her last essay was fancied most in the Kargil Handicap run over a distance of 1300 metres but the filly failed to reproduce her superb last effort and surprisingly finished down the field much to the disappointment of all her supporters who fancied her most in what looked a moderate set. The Robert Foley schooled Helen Of Troy came up tops to record her second win from her three starts this season finishing ahead of Zaneta, the other contender from Suresh's yard who appears to have improved and is likely to earn her winning bracket before the curtain is brought down on the season at the end of the month.

A smart last start winner Royal Icon was fancied most in the Defence Services Staff College Trophy run over a sprint, but the favourite partnered by Mohit Singh found the winner Star Lap from Adhirajsingh Jodha's yard too hot to handle and had to rest content with the third spot, Turf Melody from Deepesh Narredu's yard gaining the runner-up berth in the hands of Ashhad Asbar. Proud finished a suggestive fourth, while Emperor Ashoka raced in patches and this effort of the `Emperor' from Sebastian's yard is best ignored.
