PUNTERS LOSE OUT BIG ON PENULTIMATE DAY

By Ikram Khan | 25 May 2023 | OOTY

Punters lost out big on the penultimate day of the Udhagamandalam season, only two favourites, Glorious Sunshine and Seattle Blue justifying their top billing in the eight-event card. The former piloted by champion saddle artiste Umesh came up tops in the Salamandra Handicap run over a sprint after the B Suresh-trained Seattle Blue had it easy in the lower division of the Pinatubo Plate. The on-money favourite confidently partnered by Sai Kumar hit the front soon after the field of 10 runners came under the starter's flag and never let the initiative slip powering home without really raising a sweat. Sea Waters followed the winner home, while the topweighted Gajabo Grande did well to finish third ahead of Yellow Sapphire. Earlier in the upper division of the event, the six to one shot Florence  from the stables of Saddam Iqbal in the hands of Kamble produced a sparkling gallop to comfortably beat the second in demand at the betting ring Autumn Light. The favourite Knotty Power from trainer Ramanathan's yard performed below par and much to the chagrin of his supporters finished down the field.

On the strength of her good second behind Wonderful Era last week, Glorious Sunshine from Fazal-Ul-Rahman's yard  was fancied most in the Salamandra Handicap. The public choice ridden in copybook fashion by Umesh stole a march at the top of the straight and quickly put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Big Treasure gained the runner-up spot ahead of Pacific, while Wild Frank, who had his share of followers failed to even save money in place.

In what looked a very open affair, the ten to one shot Air Marshall from the stables of Parmar shocked the followers of form edging out the last start winner Demesthenes in the Almanzor Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs. Masterpiece from Suresh's yard garnered the maximum support, but the public choice after being favourably placed at the top of the straight lacked the gas in the tank to make a race of it and eventually finished in the ruck. Air Marshall powered home in determined fashion by Kaviraj gained the advantage in the final furlong and though the winner came under pressure Demesthenes in the final 100 metres, Air Marshall brought to light the resilience required to hang on to the slender lead and get into the winners' circle. Wisaka finished a game third ahead of Masterpiece, who again failed to earn his cornbill.

Looking to post her third success this season, Royal Icon was strongly fancied in the Roaring Lion Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs. The public choice piloted by Umesh called the shots for most part of the journey and looked in total control a furlong from home. Last start winner Undeniable from Ramanathan's yard at this juncture started to slowly, yet surely bridge the gap and much to the disappointment of all the big bettors, the lesser fancied Undeniable pipped the overwhelming favourite close home. Full marks to Amit and Ramanathan, the duo did play a stellar role in Undeniable's success story at the Blue Mountains. Renegade edged out the second in demand at the betting ring Swarga to take the third spot.

On the strength of his impressive victory last week, the Sebastian schooled Dark Son was fancied again to score in the upper division of the Enable Handicap run over a distance of six furlongs. He opened the favourite at (5/2) before money came pouring in on Gold Kite, backed down from (4/1) to (11/4). Constant Variable was one other who was in the betting in what on cards promised a fire to the wire finish. Rays Of Sun from P Krishna's yard upset the applecart of the three fancied contestants producing a winning gallop in the hands of apprentice jockey M S Deora to peg back the belated effort of another long shot Berrettini, while Gold Kite only managed to finish third ahead of Dark Son. Constant Variable surprisingly dropped of when the race came on a boil and it was clear that this Parmar trainee was not in the hunt.

Most pundits were of the opinion that the James McKeown schooled Slainte will prove too good in the lower division of the event. The smart last start winner who was backed to the exclusion of her eight rivals went phut like a pricked balloon after showing out in front at the top of the straight. The promising apprentice Farid Ansari guiding the fortunes of the seven to one shot Race To The Stars from Robert Foley's yard edged out  Diamond And Pearls from Sebastian's yard, while Slainte had to rest content with the third spot.

Kikata from Anil Kumar's yard was backed heavily in the concluding event, the Maid Of The Mist Handicap run over a mile. The public choice quickly gained a favourable position early on in the race and dictated the pace for most part of the journey before he shot his bolt when the race came on a boil and eventually finished a tame fourth. The topweighted Sunche Dreams from Fahad Khan's yard in the hands of Umesh, after tracking the leaders forged ahead 400 metres from home and quickly put the race to bed to the delight of the Fahad Camp. Beauregard gained the runner-up berth ahead of Lady Zeen, while Nagada continued to disappoint.
