By Ikram Khan | 27 May 2023 | BANGALORE

Trainer B Prithviraj leading Fast Pace (P Ajeeth Kumar Up), winner of The War Hammer Million

It was a disaster from the punters point of view. Five long shots including the ten to one shot Fast Pace floored the followers of form. In Thy Light winner of the principal added attraction, the KN Guruswamy Memorial Trophy and The Godfather, who reigned supreme in the Ministerial Plate, were the only two winners who nailed bold colours to the mast in the eight-event card and that resulted in most punters returning home with a big hole in the pocket.

The Hyderabad hopeful Enabling from Laxman Singh's yard set the trend in the opening event, the Royal Tern Plate run over a sprint. Fort Nelson from Neil Darashah's yard was backed to the exclusion of his 11 rivals. The even-money favourite piloted by Mumbai-based pro Zervan, much to the chagrin of the followers of form went down by the shortest of margins, a `nose' separating the public rage from the 15 to one long shot Enabling. While Chouhan astride the rankoutsider produced a fine effort to gain the day, Zervan guiding the fortunes of the Neil ward lacked the punch and panache and this cost the favourite punters dear. Another Hyderabad campaigner Alexina from Prasad Raju's yard finished third ahead of the second in demand at the betting ring Amazing Attraction.

Next, it was the five to one shot Defining Power from Narayan Gowda's yard who successfully made every post a winning one in the lower division of the Supervite Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The winner piloted by Rajesh Kumar hit the front soon after the field of 10 runners came under the starter's flag and showed a clean pair of heels to the runner-up Bruce Almighty. The favourite Solid Power from Pradeep Annaiah's yard did produced his best, but found the first two too hot to handle and had to rest content with the third spot.

Trainer Faraz Arshad dropped the biggest bombshell in the lower division, the 20 to one rankoutsider Measure Of Time upsetting the applecart of the top fancy Silver Canyon. The fact that Measure Of Time entered the winners' enclosure after 463 and in her last essay in the winter season had finished more than a dozen lengths behind Win My Luv stunned the railbirds. The trainer after the shock result disclosed that this was the best effort from his ward in the last 15 months. On a day the favourites were falling like nine pins, the final result was no big surprise, but it certainly tore the book of form inside out.

After three shock wins, the much fancied Rapidus from trainer Sulaiman Attaollahi's yard brought the smile back on the face of the dejected punters, coming up tops in  the Usha Stud Plate run over a sprint. The smart winner hit the front soon after the dozen runners came under the starter's flag and never let the initiative slip, romping home nice and easy in the hands of top gun Akshay Kumar. Win My Luv partnered by four-kilo claimer Sonu Kumar gained the runner-up berth ahead of the second in demand at the betting Crown Consort from Satish Narredu, while Kulsum completed the frame. Now that the winner has broken ice this Sulaiman trainee is likely to provide an encore.

Spurred by the success of Rapidus, the overwhelming favourite In Thy Light from trainer Prasanna Kumar's yard powerfully piloted by Akshay Kumar beat the Kolkata hopeful Meropi and Anzac Pipernal from Dominic's yard in convincing fashion. It was clear after his smashing debut, that Prasanna rated In Thy Light high and despite the fact that he was pitted against one of the best fillies from Kolkata and a smart last start winner from Dominic's yard, Prasanna was confident  that In Thy Light would come up trumps and the goodtype of youngster proved his master right powering home to score from Meropi and Anzac Pipernal. Meropi in defeat was not disgraced, going down to a top colt and it will pay to watch her progress considering the fact that this classic hopeful will benefit most from this strong run under her belt.

After the two popular victories, Artemis Ignacia from Neil Darashah's yard offered at (10/1) in the bookmakers ring produced a winning gallop at the all-important end to peg back the belated effort of the even-money favourite Siege Courageous piloted by Akshay Kumar. The talented Saqlain produced a copybook effort on the dark shot. Amreli, who had her fair share of followers finished third ahead of Galactical who caught the eye while testing the track and his form without really extending himself.

After Artemis Ignacia, Fast Pace from the stables of Prithviraj delivered the knock-out punch flooring the public rage Elpenor in the War Hammer Million. No punter including the many big bettors who punted big on the Sulaiman classic hopeful imagined that this short-priced favourite could lose taking into account his two smashing victories against the best talent in the country, but in racing the best lose out what appears a simple test and that's how the cookie crumbles. All credit to Prithviraj for sending out Fast Pace spot on and the filly made her master proud while making every post a winning one. Make no mistake, the sublime effort of Fast Pace was no flash in the pan and she will continue to make her presence felt against the best, particularly over sprint trips. Elpenor is still the best youngster at this campus and he deserves another chance. Auspicious Queen raced in patches and this run of the talented Narayan Gowda filly is best ignored.

The Mallesh Narredu schooled The Godfather garnered the maximum support in the Ministerial Plate and the strong favourite justified the confidence of his supporters, producing a sparkling gallop in the final furlong to romp home a deserving winner. Sea The Sun expectedly gained the runner-up berth ahead of Ruling Dynasty. The winner is in great heart and is set to provide an encore.
