FORM PLAYS TRUE TO THE DELIGHT OF PUNTERS

By Ikram Khan | 28 May 2023 | BANGALORE

Trainer P Shroff leading Northern Lights ( P S Chouhan up), winner of the Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Cup (Gr.3)

After the pasting they got on Saturday, most punters recouped major portion of their losses on Sunday. Six firm favourites including three on-money public fancies and one well supported second choice waltzed to victory in the eight-event card and the followers of form couldn't have asked for anything better.

Champion trainer Pesi Shroff led in two fancied winners, Northern Lights and Christofle. The former came out tops in the Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Cup, the plum event run over a distance of seven furlongs and Christofle, a frontline contender for the Colts Championship Stakes registered his third straight success after winning both his earlier starts at his parent-centre (Mumbai).

On the strength of his emphatic hat-trick in the Mumbai season, Northern Lights rightly started the favourite in the plum. The in-form grey looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring and it is needless to mention that the Pesi camp was bullish of his chances in his maiden appearance at this centre this season. Despite the fact that he looked fit and ready and he had strong form on his side, the price on the Pesi ward kept going up. The big bettors smelt a rat and chose to stay away, while the brave and bold, not perturbed trusted the grey to come good again in the hands of leading pro Chouhan. Northern Lights did just that and fortune to tell it again favoured the brave. Chouhan produced a copybook effort on the winner, who appears in great heart and it will pay to follow him and do the high-five when saddled next. Cool Rider from Neil Darashah's yard did well to gain the runner-up berth ahead of A Star Is Born, while Imperial Blue in his attempt to make post a winning one hung on to take the fourth spot.

Top gun Trevor Patel guiding the fortunes of Christofle in the V T Velu Memorial Trophy pushed the public rage to the front soon after the eight runners came under the starter's flag for the mile long trip and never let the initiative slip to the delight of the Shroff camp. Place Vendome from the stables of Sulaiman Attaollahi powerfully piloted by leading pro Akshay Kumar challenged the winner in the final furlong, but Christofle on the day had enough in the tank and in reserve to kick away at end to register a deserving hat-trick. Splendido surprised most finishing third ahead of Ramiel and is one for the note book.

Sharing the professional honours with Pesi, Neil Darashah proudly led in the overwhelming favourite Alcides Synergy in the concluding event, the upper division of the Ramkirpal Plate after striking it rich on the well supported Venus in the opening event, the Lady Gibraltar Plate run over a sprint. Venus piloted by the promising Likith Appu and Secret Lady partnered by Akshay Kumar started the favourites before the supporters of Venus went bang-bang in the betting ring and soon Venus was installed the firm favourite. The public choice made it a one horse race, the moment she hit the front and assumed control at the distance post. Benignity from the stables of Prithviraj followed the leader home  and the Inayathullah-trained Mega Success to the delight of his followers, who fancied him sweetly in place finished third.

On the strength of his impressive second in his last essay behind Amreli in the winter season, Alcides Synergy looked head and shoulders above his eight runners in the first  division of the Ramkirpal Plate run over a sprint and he proved that right cantering home in the hands of Imran Khan without really raising a sweat. Seoul from Arvind Ganapathy's yard caught the eye while finishing a game second ahead of Schafenberg. The winner is in good nick and is set to provide an encore.

The second division of the event was claimed by another public choice Opus One, who made every post a winning one pegging back the gallant effort of The Omega Man in the final furlong. Air Display finished a fair third ahead of the second in demand at the betting ring Foi, who was never in the hunt. The winner from the stables of Irfan Ghatala booted home by the promising Saqlain did produce his best to score on this day, but a repeat from the grey is highly unlikely taking into account that Opus One has no scope for improvement.

Fresh from her impressive stint in Ooty, the James McKeown schooled Neziah readily justified favouritism in the upper division of the Beautiful Plate, while providing Chouhan an arm-chair ride to success. The winner is on top of her game and Neziah is certain to make her presence felt against higher rated rivals when saddled next. River Of Gold from Parvati Byramji's yard made a satisfactory debut following Neziah home and it will not be long before this Parvati trainee sheds her maiden status.

Earlier in the lower division, Parvati led in Golden Peaks, a smart winner in the hands of Akshay Kumar. All credit to Parvati for sending out Golden Peaks spot on and the consistent youngster, who had finished third twice from his two starts in winter entered the winners' circle in his maiden appearance this summer. The on-money favourite Royal Mysore from Prasanna Kumar's yard, who had finished second behind the Poonawalla Multi-Million winner Elpenor in his only start in winter again finished second, `nosing' out Sassy. Now that Golden Peaks has broken ice it will pay to follow his progress this season.

Trainer Sharath Kumar brought off a successful coup on The Golden Dream in the third division of the Ramkirpal Plate. The winner confidently piloted by Khurshad Alam who gleefully booted  home a winner after many many summers was backed down from (7/1) to (7/2). The fact that Sharath Kumar strongly fancied The Golden Dream and his supporters put out big investments on a jockey who had no win to his name in the last few years brought to light the character and confidence of the trainer and the man was duly rewarded, the plucky Khurshad Alam gaining the day in a tight finish from the top pro Akshay Kumar, piloting the favourite Belvedere.
