RASPUTIN WINS FEATURE EVENT IN FINE STYLE

By Ikram Khan | 03 Jun 2023 | BANGALORE

Trainer Imtiaz A Sait leading Rasputin (S Saqlain up), winner of The Sir M Visvesvaraya Memorial Trophy

It was a mixed bag for the punters. Three favourites justified their rating and ranking and the fact that a strongly fancied public choice, Eridani, won the concluding event helped the railbirds return home evens-stevens. After the first two results pushed the punters back against the wall, Champions Way from Satish Narredu's yard provided the much needed relief, the public rage detonating his eight rivals without really working up a sweat in the Gadag Plate run over a mile. A confident Yash Narredu pushed the talented colt to the front the moment the nine runners came under the starter's flag for the mile long trip and Champions Way without unduly extending himself kept going away. The second straight easy victory of the Narredu ward confirmed that Champions Way is a goodtype of youngster, who will make his presence felt against the best in the weeks ahead. Turkoman did well to gain the runner-up berth ahead of Solid Power, while Cat Whiskers again disappointed failing to finish in the frame.

The Neil Darashah schooled Etosha was one other winner who made the knowledgeable sit back and acknowledge his sublime effort in the principal added attraction, the Marilingaiah Memorial Trophy run over a sprint. Etosha in fact was the most impressive winner in the seven-event card. Zervan guiding the fortunes of Etosha, who opened the favourite before he was offered at (5/1), settled the Neil ward nice and easy in the fifth place for most part of the sprint trip before he reminded the smart winner of the task ahead at the distance post and Etosha responding gamely to his master's call produced an astounding gallop in the final furlong to romp home in resplendent style. Second in demand at the betting ring, Michigan Melody followed Etosha home, while the hotly fancied General Patton from Azhar Ali's yard, after showing out in the front group, shot his bolt at the top of the straight and eventually finished in the ruck. Etosha, it is needless to mention is in fine nick and it will pay to support this Neil trainee again when next saddled.

The Imtiaz Sait-trained Rasputin was the third star performer. The Mumbai challenger piloted by the talented Saqlain pulled the plug and blew the fuse on his 10 rivals in the Sir Visvesvaraya Memorial Trophy, the plum event run over a mile. Trevalius from James McKeown's yard garnered the maximum support in the event, but the well-backed public choice graced the wrong end of the field for most part of the trip before Trevor packed punch on the James ward at the top of the straight. The public choice did cover good ground and threatened to seize control in the final furlong, but that was not to be, Rasputin galloping home in emphatic fashion. The fact that Imtiaz struck it rich with his first runner this season, provided his supporters the confidence and joy in the big tests ahead. Another Mumbai hopeful Fortunate Son finished a creditable third and it will not be long before this Jadhav ward earns his cornbill.

Sparingly raced Eridani from Azhar Ali's yard, who was consistently producing impressive performances on the trial track, came up tops in the concluding event, the upper division of the Prince Khartoum Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. Jagadeesh partnering the overwhelming favourite produced a copybook effort to the delight of the Azhar camp who were very bullish on the smart winner, who looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring. Mighty Zo on the strength of his surprise victory in his last essay was also strongly supported to provide an encore, but the Prasanna ward piloted by Akshay Kumar found Eridani too hot to handle on the day. The lesser fancied Top Dancer from Neil Devaney's stables managed to save money in place.

The upper division of the event was claimed by Sharath Kumar schooled six to one shot The Perfect Choice piloted by Sai Kiran. The winner edged out lesser fancied Klimit from Imtiaz Khan's yard, while the strongly backed Peridot from trainer Irfan Ghatala's yard partnered by Likith Appu finished a poor third. Klimit with this run under her belt will prove to be a different proposition next time out.

The Hyderabad camp was gung-ho on the chances of the Sequeira schooled Miss Maya in the upper division of the Glorious Colours Plate run over 1100 metres. The filly confidently piloted by Abhay Singh produced a winning gallop in the final furlong to snuff out the challenge of the local hopeful Seeking The Stars, who in her effort to make every post a winning one in the hands of top pro Trevor Patel failed to deliver the goods in the final few strides.

The lower division of the event produced a shock winner, the ten to one shot Spirit Of Rose providing Parvati a big reason to smile. The winner booted home by top gun Akshay Kumar hit the front soon after the nine contestants jumped out and kicked away in the straight to shed her maiden status in style. This is Parvati second success after Golden Peaks entered the winners' circle last week. The piping hot favourite Immortal Beauty from Satish Narredu's yard who was touted a `moral certainty' before the nine contestants moved out of the paddock did his best, but that was only good enough to chase the shadow of the winner, who has improved most and is set to provide an encore.
