KOLKATA CHALLENGER MONTEVERDI WINS FEATURE

By Ikram Khan | 10 Jun 2023 | BANGALORE

Mr Chaduranga Kanthraj Urs & trainer Vijay Singh leading Monteverdi (Hindu Singh Up), winner of The Nawab M Arshad Ali Khan Memorial Cup

The book form goes out of the window the moment the horses line-up for the action at the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC). And no surprises, it proved to be another bad day for punters, only two favourites including one money-back favourite Pavarotti coming through in the seven-event card on Saturday. Silver Swift from Azhar Ali's yard, who garnered good support made every post a winning one in the third division of the Rare Gem Plate run over a sprint.

Champion Ooty professional Umesh sent the grey mare to the front the moment the eight runners came under the starter's flag and the public choice never let the initiative slip powering home in convincing fashion. The topweighted Mr Humble followed the winner home, while Bellissimo from Sharath Kumar's yard only managed to save money in place. Chiraag from M R Singh's yard was also strongly fancied in this event, but he burst his blood vessel and finished in the ruck.

Knight Defensor from Imtiaz Khan's yard was fancied most, ahead of Tehani, who had a good run under her belt, finishing a game second behind Verrochio on the opening day. Ebotse from the stables of Arjun Manglorkar too attracted good support in what appeared a three-cornered contest in the Ascot Plate. After the public choice Knight Defensor hit the front and called the shots for most part of the six furlongs trip, Tehani partnered by top gun Akshay Kumar produced a sparkling gallop at the distance post to take charge in the final furlong and romp home a deserving winner. Knight Defensor hung on to gain the runner-up berth ahead of Irish Coffee who was seen finishing on strongly at the finish, while Ebotse it appeared needed this run.

After they failed to bring off a coup on Chiraag, the M R Singh camp again went bang-bang on Groovin in the second division of the Rare Gem Plate. The overwhelming favourite piloted by Hindu Singh tracked the leader Millbrook for most part of the trip before he streaked ahead at the top of the straight only to surrender the advantage to the seven to one shot Macron from Pradeep Annaiah's yard. Glow In The Dark from Warren Singh's yard too had his share of followers, but the Warren ward found Macron and Groovin too hot to handle and had to rest content with the third spot. Seoul from trainer Aravind Ganapathy's yard, who had caught the eye while finishing a good second behind Alcides Synergy in her last essay failed to repeat the effort and finished a poor fourth.

Crown Consort with a good run under her belt was the piping hot favourite in the Manjri Stud Plate run over a sprint, but it was unfancied stablemate Eternal Princess who stunned the followers of form making every post a winning one in the hands of Vinod Shinde. Crown Consort held a definite edge in this moderate set particularly after arch rival Tough Cookie was withdrawn at the gates, but the public rage was only chasing the shadows of the winner who delivered a knock-out punch to the followers of form, who pinned their hopes on the strongly fancied stablemate. Lauterbrunnen finished third ahead of Archway who was not in the hunt.

After Crown Consort's debacle and Eternal Princess' shock victory, Stormy Ocean was another public choice who bit the dust in the Brig.RCR Hill Memorial Trophy run over a distance of nine furlongs. The four to one shot Mighty Zo from Prasanna Kumar's yard who met a tartar in Eridani in his last essay, relished the extended trip, zooming past the front runner Splendido to win in emphatic fashion. Top pro Akshay Kumar produced a copybook effort on the impressive winner. Splendido hung on gamely to finish second ahead of Truth, while Stormy Ocean plodded in to complete the frame.

Most racing pundits opined that Isnt She Beautiful will be hard to down in the Nawab M Arshad Ali Khan Memorial Cup run over a distance of seven furlongs, but even this top fancy failed to justify favouritism much to the disappointment of the railbirds. The Imtiaz Khan ward after failing to gain a favourable position early on in the race was never in it. In fact  it was clear even before the race came on a boil that the top fancy would finish down the field. And that's exactly what happened. The ten to one shopt Monteverdi from Kolkata champion trainer Vijay Singh's yard powerfully piloted by Hindu Singh gained the day ahead of Pride's Angel, while De Villiers saved money in place.

After what proved to be a walk in the park for Pavarotti on the second day of the season, the Neil Darasahah ward was touted a `moral certainty' in the concluding event, the first division of the Rare Gem Plate and the money-back favourite again donkey-licked his rivals to register his second straight success in style. Pavarotti is in rousing form and is set to record a hat-trick when saddled next.
