Trainer P Shroff leading Northern Lights (P S Chouhan Up), winner of The Krishnaraja Wadiyar Cup

On a day three on-money favourites failed to justify their top billing much to the disappointment of the railbirds, the champion grey Northern Lights registered his fifth straight success in resplendent style. The star performer from champion trainer Pesi Shroff's yard tracked Supreme Dance, unbeaten from his three starts at the Blue Mountains, for most part of the mile long journey and the moment the leading saddle artiste Pradeep Chouhan released his iron grip on the star performer at the top of the straight, Northern Lights shot through to quickly put the race to bed in emphatic fashion. The champion grey, it is needless to mention, is in rousing form and is set to maintain his winning streak when saddled next. Mojito from M K Jadhav's yard followed the winner home ahead of Kolkata's pride and joy, Success, while the topweighted A Star Is Born completed the frame. The James McKeown schooled Once You Go Black was sweetly fancied in place, but the Mysore Derby winner after staying in contention for most part of the trip went `phut' like a pricked balloon at the top of the straight and eventually finished in the ruck.

The Dominic-trained Sunway Lagoon, Yukan from Sulaiman Attaollahi's yard and Invincible from the stables of Darius Byramji floored the punters, all three on-money favourites taking a lot of good money down the drain. Sunway Lagoon competing in the opening event, the Mysore Plate run over a sprint was backed down from (6/4) to (55/100). The public rage piloted by Imran Khan tracked the leader Perfect Halo before streaking ahead at the top of the straight, but the moment the four-kilo claimer Saba alerted the ten to one long shot Benignity from Prithviraj's yard, it was all over bar the shouting, Benignity zipping past the short-priced favourite to push the punters back against the wall. Perfect Halo in his attempt to make every post a winning one hung on gamely to finish third ahead of Chandrakanta, while Mars was never in the hunt.

On paper the Sulaiman schooled Yukan had the best credentials among the seven contestants in fray for the Speaker's Cup run over a sprint, but the strongly fancied public choice met a tartar in Galactical who made every post a winning one to the delight of the Pradeep Annaiah camp. Arvind Kumar astride the winner was cool and composed and this helped Galactical enter the winners' circle after his suggestive effort in his last essay. Andorra in line for a hat-trick after winning her two starts in Ooty finished third and it will not be long before this McKeown trainee enters the winners' circle at this centre.

Twice third from his two starts in the winter season, Invincible from the stables of Darius Byramji was backed to the exclusion of his seven rivals in the Everynsky Plate run over a sprint, but the Win Legend progeny, it was clear found the debutant Long Lease from the stables of Rajesh Narredu too hot to handle and finished a poor third behind another first time runner Wonder Woman. The winner appears a goodtype of youngster, while Invincible who reportedly broke a blood vessel is best left ignored.

In the concluding event, the Jamakhandi Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs, All Attraction from Prithviraj's yard and the Rajesh Narredu-trained Synthesis dominated the support in the betting, both joint favourites at (13/10). But it was pick of the parade ring, Synthesis who reigned supreme while helping Rajesh record a good double. The winner confidently piloted by Yash Narredu spurred by his success on Long Lease, assumed command at the distance post before putting the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Crosswater surprised most gaining the runner-up berth ahead of All Attraction. The winner is in fine nick and is set to complete a hat-trick of wins when saddled next.

After the favourite Top Dancer from Neil Devaney's yard was withdrawn at the gates, the topweighted Turkoman brought the smile back on the face of Imtiaz Khan, coming up tops in the Astounding Plate run over a mile. Two of Imtiaz Khan’s fancied contestants, Knight Defensor and Isnt She Beautiful had lost on Saturday and Turkoman in the hands of Trevor provided much relief and a shot in-the-arm to the supporters of the Imtiaz camp. Aircraft from Warren Singh’s yard gained the runner-up berth ahead of Antilope. The runner-up it appears has improved and it he is set to earn his cornbill in the weeks ahead.

Aherne was another from this yard who let down large following in the Nandi Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs and Imtiaz must be tearing his hair simply because Aquamatic, the winner had failed to make an impression in his last start six starts in winter and the dejected owners shifted Aquamatic to Azhar Ali on request. In his first start under the care of Azhar Ali, Aquamatic, it appeared had found his galloping shoes and in the hands of Saqlain gallantly pegged back the public choice. Clever Hans finished a game third, while Katana and Aferpi were not in the hunt.
