DEDICATE WINS PLUM IN STYLE

Trainer Vijay Singh leading Dedicate (Hindu Singh Up), winnner of The Justice P Medapa Memorial Trophy

Form played true on the eve of the Fillies Championship Trial Stakes and the rail;birds enjoyed a good run on Saturday. The Kolkata challenger Dedicate reigned supreme in the plum event, the Justice P Medapa Memorial Trophy, while Snow Piercer from the stables of Sulaiman Attaollahi's yard came up tops in the principal added attraction, the Sir Cecil Cup.

Smarting under the defeat at the hands of The Golden Dream in his last essay, the topweighted Belvedere settled the score with the Sharath Kumar ward producing a winning gallop at the all-important end to snuff out the challenge of The Golden Dream in the lower division of the June Plate run over a sprint. The winner powerfully piloted by leading pro Akshay Kumar enjoyed a two kilo advantage in scales and this proved decisive at end. The favourite Breeze Bluster failed to match strides with the first two and had to rest content with the third spot.

The Prasanna Kumar schooled Ruling Dynasty opened on-money favourite in the Kranji Plate run over a distance of 2000 metres before money started pouring in on the Hyderabad challenger Original Sin from Sequeira's yard. The Hyderabad-based trainer fresh from his success on She Can in the Fillies Trial Stakes at Mysore on Friday was very bullish on the bred in the purple filly, who had finished a suggestive fourth in her last essay pitted against higher ranked rivals. Original Sin despite the top gun Trevor Patel guiding her fortunes failed to live up to the expectations of her trainer and finished a poor third behind the runner-up Crown Witness. The public choice Ruling Goddess in the hands of a confident Akshay Kumar made every post a winning one and on the strength of this facile victory is set to provide an encore.

The topweighted Eastern Sea was fancied most in the next event, the Maddur Stakes run over a distance of seven furlongs, but the Neil Darashah ward after failing to gain a favourable position early on in the race failed to improve and eventually finished down the field much to the disappointment of her supporters. The second in demand at the betting ring, Maroon from champion trainer Prasanna Kumar's yard partnered by John after a good lung-opener on the second day produced his best and cantered home to the delight of the Prasanna camp. Phoenix Surprise from Kishan Thomas' yard followed the winner home ahead of Double Vision, while Bellissimo completed the frame.

A smart winner on debut in winter, Divo from the stables of Darius Byramji was fancied most in the Royal Command Plate run over a sprint. The favourite in the hands of Zervan raced in patches and finished a poor third much to the chagrin of the followers of form who fancied the Darius ward strongly despite the fact that he was shouldering 60 kilos. The three to one shot Fondness Of You from Rajesh Narredu's yard confidently piloted by Yash Narredu proved too good zipping home in style. The lesser fancied Dynamic Force `nosed' out Divo to gain  the runner-up, while Eco Friendly made the board without unduly extending himself.

Despite the fact that she was making her debut in a mile long event and that she had not made any heads turn while she was training on the trial track, Mariana was surprisingly backed to the exclusion of her 10 rivals in the Sir Cecil Cup. The false favourite after jumping out a tad slow was seen gracing the wrong end of the field for most part of the mile long journey and even before the half-way mark it was clear that the big money see was shouldering was only going down the drain. The punters punted big on her more out of courage than conviction and in this game the brave and bold approach seldom brings home the desired result. The eight to one shot Snowpiercer from Sulaiman's yard shed her maiden status in style putting the race to bed at the top of the straight. Vyasa edged out Star Concept to gain the runner-up berth and it will not be long before this Darius trainee enters the winners' circle. Now that Snowpiercer has broken ice she is certain to make her presence felt in the next level. Mariana will need a couple of educative runs to find her feet and until then she is best left ignored.

After making a winning start and then finishing a game second in her next effort at her parent-centre, Dedicate from Vijay Singh's yard on paper had the best credentials in the plum event. The winner looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring and with Hindu Singh to partner her, the followers of form fancied her strongly. The public choice jumped out well and the moment she put her head in front at the top of the straight it was all over bar the shouting. Lauterbrunnen followed the smart winner home, while the topweighted Slainte caught the eye while finishing third and is one for the note book.

Back after an easy fourth last week, the Arjun Manglorkar schooled Archway rightly garnered the maximum support in the concluding event, the upper division of the June Plate and the top fancy in the hands of John romped home nice and easy pegging back the belated effort of Twilight Tornado who looks fit and ready to earn his cornbill when saddled next. Defining Power too had his share of supporters but the Narayan Gowda trainee found the first two too hot to handle.
