By Ikram Khan | 01 Jul 2023 | BANGALORE

Trainer Rajesh Narredu leading Long Lease (Yash Narredu up), winner of The Five Stars Shipping Juvenile Sprinters' Million (Gr.3)

The seven-event card framed on Saturday failed to generate the required interest and excitement among the railbirds. The response to the Five Stars Shipping Juvenile Sprinters' Million, the plum event was poor, only six contestants came under the starter's flag for the six furlongs sprint despite the fact that more than 275 three-year-olds are stabled at this premier horse racing campus. Similarly, only half-dozen runners including three from Sulaiman Attaollahi's yard accepted to contest in the principal added attraction, the Managing Committee Gold Cup run over a mile and in this poor quality field, the second in demand at the betting ring, Moon's Blessing emerged the winner.. The fact that the Bangalore summer season this year has slipped down from the rating and ranking it enjoys is worrying, taking into account that the managing committee did well to increase the stakes which helped attract the 170 outstation horses. Yet, the conductors of the game are struggling to frame a quality card and that's largely due to the lack of enterprise and the lacklustre approach of the professionals. If not for Sulaiman entering three horses in the added attraction, the Managing Committee Gold Cup would have gone void and this is not a one-off case this summer. In fact this has been the pattern and it dosen't augur well for the sport at this premier centre.

A smart winner on debut, Long Lease from Rajesh Narredu's yard garnered the maximum support in the feature event. The bred in the purple filly recovered well from a stumble at the start to justify the confidence of her supporters and is likely to complete a hat-trick of wins when saddled next. Yash Narredu displayed good poise and cool while guiding her after the initial jolt, while Hindu Singh astride the well supported second favourite Dedicate looked confused and totally out of sorts and to put it straight failed to provide proper and required assistance to the Vijay Singh ward who eventually finished a tame third behind the runner-up Leather Back, who it must be mentioned  has improved most and is ready to shed his maiden status at the next available opportunity.

On the strength of his impressive second behind Monteverdi in his last essay, Pride's Angel from Mumbai-based trainer Imtiaz Sait's yard was fancied most in the  Managing Committee Gold Cup, but the public choice partnered by Akshay Kumar disappointed the followers of form failing to save money in place, never mind the win investments going down the drain. Moon's Blessing in the hands of leading pro Pradeep Chouhan made every post a winning one to the delight of Sulaiman, while the Vijay Singh camp too was immensely pleased with the eye-catching effort of the runner-up Regency Smile.

Top Dancer from Neil Devaney's yard gained top billing in the concluding event, the upper division of the Malakpet Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs.but the favourite met a tartar in Clever Hans from Prithviraj's yard who produced a sparkling gallop in the hands of four-kilo claimer Tousif Khan to romp home a deserving winner. Top Dancer failed to gain a favourable position early on in the race and to add to it, the overwhelming favourite took time to warm up in the straight and that helped Clever Hans hang on to the advantage he had gained at the distance post. Dragon's Gold finished a suggestive third ahead of The Golden Dream.

The lower division of the event was claimed by the four to one shot Able One from Azhar Ali's yard. The winner confidently piloted by Chouhan proved too good for his seven rivals powering home by a clear three-length margin.from Mystical Merkabah, while the favourite Antilope raced in patches and only managed to complete the frame.

Hindu Singh who blotted his book on Dedicate, earlier packed punch on the public choice Sand Castles to win the opening event, the Royal Challenge Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The winner from Warren Singh's yard, who had gone down fighting to By The Book in her last effort produced another good effort to earn her cornbill. Pettes Love gained the runner-up berth ahead of Sekhmet, while the topweighted Ultimate Chance was never in the hunt.

In a pulse-pounding finish, the seven to one shot English Bay from Dominic's yard `nosed' out the top fancy Alcides Synergy in the Poonawalla Stud Plate run over a sprint. The winner piloted in determined fashion by T S Jodha streaked ahead at the distance post and gallantly fought a ding-dong battle with the public choice to gain the day by the shortest of margins. Last start winner Archway from Arjun Manglorkar's yard finished a game third ahead of Montelena, who was sweetly fancied in place, but much to the chagrin of her supporters finished a tame fourth.

Knight Defensor from Imtiaz Khan's yard was the most impressive winner of the day. The goodtype of youngster who was beaten by Tehani in his debut, donkey-licked his seven rivals to canter home in the Smart Chieftan Plate and on the strength of this performance is certain to add a couple of more wins to his kitty in the months ahead. Victoria Doresaani finished second ahead of Maarzgovel who is best suited only for sprints.
