GALAHAD WINS RR BYRAMJI MEMORIAL CUP

Mr Tegbir Brar & trainer S S Attaollahi leading Galahad (Akshay Kumar Up), winner of The R R Byramji Memorial Cup

The results obtained on the eve of the betway Bangalore Summer Derby floored the punters, a solitary favourite Serai justifying his rating and ranking, while the rest of the seven top fancied runners chose to take a back seat and watch the lesser fancied contestants waltz to victory. While it is needless to mention that most punters returned home with a big hole in the pocket, mention must be made that despite no public choice entering the winners' circle in the Jackpot pool, one lucky punter cracked the pot of gold, taking home Rs,1,45,061, on a Rs 10 investment at the tote window and solving the tough five-horse puzzle.

The biggest bombshell was dropped in the RR Byramji Memorial Cup, the plum event run over a distance of seven furlongs. Galahad after two listless efforts including his dismal performance in the Colts Championship Stakes, finishing last in the dozen horse field, turned the book of form inside out, producing an astounding gallop in the hands of top gun Akshay Kumar to stun the followers of form. The grey helped Akshay record a grand treble, gallantly pegging back the belated effort of Prana, while the favourite Lazarus from champion trainer Pesi Shroff's yard after raising hopes at the top of the straight, lacked the gas in the tank to seal the deal and eventually finished a tame third.

Akshay earlier booted home the Parvati Byramji-trained Golden Peaks and the Sulaiman schooled Place Vendome. The former, who made a fine impression while shedding her maiden status beating the strongly fancied Royal Mysore from Prasanna Kumar's yard in her last start, produced another sublime effort to edge out the overwhelming favourite August in a humdinger. Akshay in a never-say-die effort packed punch on the Parvati trainee and slowly, yet surely bridged the gap before snatching the verdict at the shadow of the winning post. Parvati was delighted and she deserved all the accolades. It was not just the win, more importantly the win on a day the legend was remembered filled Parvati's cup of joy. Last start winner Snowpiercer followed the first two, while Crown Witness completed the frame.

Class comes from consistency and Akshay astride the second in demand at the betting ring Place Vendome produced a copybook effort to come up trumps in the Chennai Cup run over a mile. Twice second from as many starts this season, it proved to be third time lucky for the Sulaiman ward who appears to have improved most and all credit to Sulaiman for persevering with this talented filly who always fell short, failing to perform to the best of her ability. Now that she has broken ice, Place Vendome is certain to add another victory before the curtain is drawn this summer. Knight Of Hooves surprised most gaining the runner-up spot in the mile long journey, while the well fancied Last Wish from Neil Devaney's yard lost pace at the top of the straight and eventually finished in the ruck.

The six to one shot Aldiva brought the smile back on the face of leading trainer Arjun Manglorkar who lost two races, August and Aralina on the post. After making a none-too-happy debut, Aldiva in the small six-horse field contesting for the Mysore Cup produced a winning gallop at the distance post to zoom past the front runner Decacorn from the stables of M K Jadhav and chalk out his maiden success. The on-money favourite Wonder Woman who had made a favourable impression while finishing a game second behind Longlease, shockingly failed to reproduce that effort and this cost her supporters dear.

The punters smelt a rat, the moment the price on Aralina kept going up and up despite the fact that the filly had the best credentials in the 10-horse field lined-up for the upper division of the Indian Pattern Committee Trophy run over a sprint. John partnering the topweight followed the leader Seminole Wind from James McKeown's yard all through the six furlongs trip before he challenged the leader at the distance post. At this juncture it looked like the favourite would speed past Seminole Wind and score, but that was not to be and that's simply because Hindu Singh astride the winner displayed the pluck and guts required to win, while John surprisingly made no use of the stick and only chose to ride hands and heels in the final 100 metres. Hindu Singh, it was clear outwitted John. The Kolkata-based pro was more determined and purposeful and that tilted the scales in his favour.

The lower division of the event was claimed by the second in demand at the betting ring Klimt from Imtiaz Khan's yard. The winner piloted by Neeraj Rawal, back after his satisfactory stint at the United Kingdom, on the strength of his game effort in her last essay, second behind The Perfect Choice was strongly tipped to score. But money came pouring in on the Pradeep Annaiah schooled Mighty Swallow who in his effort to make every post a winning one packed up in the final furlong and lost the runner-up berth to Dynamic Force. It proved to be a bad day for the sporting owners, Rajan and Gautam,Aggarwal, three fancied and well supported horses, Aralina, Inyouwebelieve and Mighty Swallow failing to get into the winners' circle.  Neeraj earlier booted home the seven to one shot Cyrenius in the Kolkata Cup. The winner after assuming command at the distance post hung on gamely to peg back the public choice Inyouwebelieve partnered by Trevor Patel who drew a blank on this day.

Aravind Ganapathy struck it rich on Serai. The smart winner of the opening event, the Squanderer Cup was strongly supported and the top fancy in the hands of Saqlain showed a clean pair of heels to her seven rivals, romping home by a big margin of seven lengths. Serai on the strength of this performance is set to provide an encore. Pettes Love followed the winner home finishing ahead of Je Ne Sais Quoi from Azhar Ali's yard.
