GUTSY SUCCESS WINS ST. LEGER IN THRILLER

By Ikram Khan | 23 Jul 2023 | BANGALORE

Trainer Vijay Singh leading Success (Suraj Narredu Up), winner of The Usha Stud Golden Jubilee Bangalore St. Leger (Gr.2)

A couple of crazy and below par performances by a couple of fancied contestants, who had produced sublime efforts in their last starts shocked the followers of form. And one hot case in the second race stunned the punters. It's time the men in charge crack the whip on the offenders, who are willingly making a mockery of the book of form.

The Neil Devaney-trained Win My Luv in her last start over a similar trip in the same class and with the same jockey had recorded a smart victory and on Sunday when the mare was hotly tipped to score she simply tore the book of form inside out and finished down the field. Win My Luv finished a dozen lengths behind the winner Clever Hans, who like Win My Luv had won his last start impressively. When Clever Hans again performed to his optimum level and recorded his second straight success what went wrong with Win My Luv is the question that needs an answer. The Neil Devaney ward raced like a dud after powering home like a champion in her last start three weeks ago. The blow-hot, blow-cold performances need to be explained. The punters are hard hit by the shocking reversal of form and are fast losing confidence in the system and the authorities who are placed to exercise strict vigil.

The Arjun Manglorkar schooled Ricardo was another case which needs a proper look-in. A decisive winner in his last essay, Ricardo competing in the concluding event was the overwhelming favourite, the railbirds rightly choosing to support him on the strength of his impressive showing, on a day Win My Luv too displayed her true potential. But this time out Ricardo finished last of the seven runners. The dismal effort was too bad to be true.and calls for a serious investigation. It is common in these cases when questioned the connections of the horse will point out to the track and talk about kick-back and various other things, forgetting that the other contestants too are racing on the same track and it simply is a level playing field,

Senior and experienced jockey, Zervan's performance astride the pipping hot favourite Sea Eagle in the lower division of the Flirting Vision Plate was deplorable. First it was the alarming drift in price which surprised most. Rightly quoted at half-money at the start, Sea Eagle was happily offered at (5/4) by the bookmakers before the Neil Darashah ward finally closed at (95/100), yet double the price from what was quoted at the start. Next it was Zervan, who appeared to have taken a nap soon after the eight runners came under the starter's flag for the 1100 metres dash. The experienced rider made no effort to improve his position and happily chose to race a good eight lengths behind the leaders in the scurry. This coming from an experienced pro was not acceptable and finally when Zervan asked Sea Eagle to climb a mountain, win from a hopeless position, the game filly produced a stupendous effort to overhaul the leader Wish Again, but Zervan again for more reasons than one failed to properly guide and drive her at the finish and this cost the connections of Sea Eagle and the followers of form dear. Sea Eagle, it is needless to mention lost a race which she would have easily won and thanks to Zerrvan's injudicious effort most punters lost a fortune supporting the Neil filly who looked outstanding in this set.Wish Again from Neil Devaney's yard in the hands of Indrajeet entered the winners' circle, but later Win My Luv spoilt the party for the trainer. It was no Win and no love.

The talented Kolkata raider Success produced a gutsy effort to come up trumps in the fourth and final classic of the season, the Usha Stud Golden Jubilee Bangalore St.Leger run over the energy-sapping distance of 2800 metres. The half-money favourite looked the best in the parade ring before she produced her best to peg back Pissarro and La Reina in a close finish to the delight of the railbirds. Suraj Narredu was at his best on the classic winner, packing punch, while stretching every sinew to help Success resume her successful missions on the big stage. Pissarro piloted by Trevor did well to gain the runner-up berth ahead of La Reina, who lacked the gas to match strides with the first two in the final furlong.

The talented apprentice Abdul Fazal who recorded a double on Saturday, booted home the Warren Singh schooled Konichiwa in the opening event, the Amazing Grace Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. Cinco De Mayo from Devaney's yard was fancied most but his pilot Indrajeet failed in his attempt to make the right move at the right time, flashing on the scene late to only lose a race which he would have probably won had he alerted his mount a little early in the straight. Max Mueller in his attempt to make every post a winning one hung on to finish third ahead of Altair who packed up at the top of the straight.

The Sulaiman Attaollahi-trained Marzgovel proved too good in the Betway Mamma's Mink Plate run over a sprint. The bred in the purple filly Queen Of Kyiv making her debut was fancied most, but she shot her bolt and retired much to the chagrin of her supporters who chose to support her on her pedigree alone and the fact that her owners had paid a King's ransom to procure her. Crosswater edged out I Want It All to gain the second spot by the shortest of margins, while Chililady failed to even save money in place.

The well-backed The Perfect Choice came good in the Azhar Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The winner confidently piloted by Sai Kiran stole a march approaching the distance post and quickly put the race to bed in the final furlong. The moody Seoul did well to finish second ahead of Agera, while the second in demand at the betting ring, Southern Force only managed to complete the frame.
