SWIFT MAKES A WINNING APPEARANCE AT PUNE

By Usman Rangila | 30 Jul 2023 | PUNE

Trainer P Shroff leading Swift (N Bhosale Up), winner of The J. E. Hughes Trophy

Fresh after her solitary run at Bangalore where she down to Triptika, Swift proved too good for her rivals in her maiden appearance at Pune. Swift (Dabirsim - Love Is Enough) was entrusted to 5kg-claimer Navnath Bhosale by Pesi Shroff and the bay filly gave no anxious moments to her supporters as she claimed the JE Hughes Trophy with a good measure of comfort. Swift seemed in no hurry to display her talent as she raced behind the front pack headed by Cellini and Superlative till the turn. Making steady progress as the field was homeward bound, Navnath atop Swift essayed his challenge by producing her on the outer flank and went in chase of Cellini, who had slipped into the lead at the final bend. Swift  unleashed a brilliant run in the short Pune straight and soon overwhelmed Cellini with less than furlong away from the wire. Gazino took some time in warming up to his task but could only finish second ahead of Magileto, who also made a late appearance on the scene. Cellini retired to be fourth.

It's My Time from Dallas Todywalla’s string was another facile winner, who took home the P Hadow Trophy. Akshay Kumar kept the heavily fancied It's My Time (Roderic O'Connor - Unforgettable You) in striking position as speedy Arcana showed the way to the field. It's My Time got a dream opening between Souza and Majestic Warrior as the heads turned for home. Akshay seized the opportunity and put the favourite into top gear. It was evident that It's My Time would soon devour Arcana which he easily did in the last furlong en route his third career success. Lord and Master, saddled by Shazaan Shah after change in ownership, came from nowhere to finish a good second ahead of Lit and Vincent Van Gogh.

Sea The Sun finally found his way to the winner's enclosure thus graduating from the maiden ranks in his seventh career start. Racing in a handicap race for the first time, Pesi Shroff trained and PS Chouhan ridden Sea The Sun's (Sea The Moon - Aspen Sun) task was made easier by Luminosity who set the early pace helping the winner to settle down nicely. Sea The Sun chased him down and cruised past the tiring Luminosity at the turn to go sailing ahead and won easily to register an emphatic victory over late finishing Transcend. Alpha Domino raced thereabouts and ended third after failing to quicken in the straight and was followed home by Kimiko.

Miss American Pie also shed her maiden status in a five-furlong scurry when hard-ridden by NS Parmar in the Classic Talk Plate. Mansingh Jadhav schooled Miss American Pie (Gleneagles - Reine Australe) raced in the mid pack as Moonlight Kiss sprinted ahead only to surrender later to Zafirah. Miss American Pie got into her stride in the final furlong even as Zafirah was battling  with Nirvana and Armoury to retain the lead. But they were all frustrated by Miss American Pie who stormed into the lead opposite the stands and won well from Zafirah and the fast-finishing Racing Romance who pegged back Armoury close home. Racing Romance will certainly do well after her debut experience as also Zafirah and Armoury.

Like Shroff, Jadhav too achieved a double when Pure (Excellent Art - Equine Love) struck immediately on relegation to Class IV. Ridden by Prashant Dhebe, Pure fell back after receiving a slight check due to jostling in the early part of the race whilst Northern Singer established a slender lead over Intense Belief and Sentinel. Pure meanwhile found a wall of horses racing ahead as Dhebe switched gears on entering the home stretch. The bay gelding however manoeuvred his way through the bunch and took the shortest way home. Pure's devastating run put paid to the hopes of Northern Singer who was being hailed as a winner close home. Commandment, who ended a nose behind Northern Singer, found his rhythm a bit late as he came with a flashing in the dying moments of the race. Jet fire ended a close fourth.

After languishing as a maiden for long, the bay gelding Adamas eventually found his mark in the day's curtain raiser. Malesh Narredu groomed Adamas (Mineshaft - Evelyn's Dancer) showed good initial speed to hit the front when the starter's flag came down and Yash Narredu guided him confidently to oblige his followers. Zacapa and Fashion Icon tried hard to catch the winner in the final run in but found Adamas kicking on gamely. Come Back Please warmed up late to finish fourth.

Narendra Lagad saddled Alpine Star justified his favouritism with a easy win in the hands of apprentice Mustakim Alam in the last race of the day. Favourite Alpine Star (Surfrider - Snowing) raced alongside Tabriz and Doc Martin till entering the final lap of the six furlong trip and streaked clear when the field straightened to leave his rivals stranded. Doc Martin had to console himself with the runner up berth. Stunning Visual, who missed the jump, came flying towards the end to finish in the money ahead of The Fluitist.
