THIRD AVENUE WINS GOVERNOR'S CUP

By Ikram Khan | 12 Aug 2023 | BANGALORE

Third Avenue (Akshay Kumar Up), winner of The Governor's Cup (Gr.3)

Champion saddle artiste Akshay Kumar and trainer Rajesh Narredu dominated the final day's summer races which proved to be a disaster from the punters point of view, joint favourite Gold Tip apart, the rest of the nine favourites choosing to take a back seat, while the outsiders made mockery of the book of form, cleaning out the punters who returned home with a big hole in the pocket. To rub salt into their wounds, Rajesh Narredu-trained Polished Girl, Prasanna Kumar schooled Evaldo and Sofiya from the stables of champion trainer Sulaiman Attaollahi brought off successful coups to the delight of the insiders and right connections, while the followers of form lost out big trusting the form guide and the performances in the morning trials.

Polished Girl competing in the Betway Salazaar Plate was making an appearance after five months. The fact that she missed out the full summer season before her trainer chose to race her on the final day only confirmed that the talented `Girl' was not fit enough to compete until she started to train late in the season. The Rajesh Narredu ward coming back after a long lay-off, it must be mentioned had last won a race 303 days ago in Mysore. Nevertheless she performed better than her fancied stablemate Ashwa Yudhvir who had won his last start. Etosha from Neil Darashah's yard garnered the maximum support in the event and despite Akshay Kumar producing his best and Etosha performing to his ability, the public choice failed to make an impression on Polished Girl, who made every post a winning one in the hands of Vinod Shinde. It is true and one will have to accept that the speedy Polished Girl had the class to beat her 10 rivals, but the manner in which she detonated the field, back after five long months surprised most pundits, who made no secret of their opinion that the connections did well to pull out a rabbit from the bag. .

The Prasanna Kumar schooled Evaldo finished four lengths behind the top performer Northern Lights from champion trainer Pesi Shroff's yard in his last essay over a seven furlongs trip. Earlier the classic winner had disappointed most finishing more than 10 lengths behind Supreme Dance at Udhagamandalam. Supreme Dance had again beaten Evaldo in their next head-to head clash gaining the runner-up berth behind Northern Lights. But on the final day Evaldo contesting in the Karnataka Mile Championship Cup donkey-licked Supreme Dance, finishing more than 20 lengths ahead of the Sebastian ward. The stunning reversal of form shocked most old hats in the game including the seasoned Chennai trainer Sebastian, who now will need to pick up an old lamp from the flea market and diligently scrub and polish it with the hope that a Genie will appear. But then Prasanna, it appears has got the right lamp and the top schooler who consistently tops the trainers leader board was bullish on Evaldo and the star performer after two below par efforts came into his own and pulled the plug on the favourite, A Star Is Born and Once You Go Black. It was as easy as sweeping autumn leaves from the garden path for Evaldo and the men in the camp with a spring in their stride were merrily walking to the payout counter of the bookmakers, the moment Akshay stormed up to challenge his  rivals at the top of the straight knowing that Prasanna has both the magic lamp and the magic wand. Prasanna earlier led in 10 to one long shot Nikolina who upset the applecart of the strongly fancied favourite Czar in the Admiral Henry John Rous Trophy. Akshay Kumar who partnered Evaldo was at his best on Nikolina riding like one possessed to help the filly, who graced the wrong end of the field all through the seven furlongs trip to come out and whizz past the front runners in the final furlong.

Sofiya like Polished Girl was making her first appearance this season on the final day. She was listed to contest in a seven furlongs event last month before the filly was withdrawn on veterinary grounds. Back after 199 days and seven months after her last success she was fancied to upset the applecart of Mazal Tov in the upper division of the Camineto Plate run over a sprint. The fact that Sulaiman was confident and trusted her to beat a well performed top fancy while planning and successfully pulling off a coup, is a feather in the thinking cap of the trainer. But then the punters and the many knowledgeable are still exercising their cerebellum to find out how Sulaiman has got hold of all the aces and the Jokers in the pack and releases them only at profitable times. The fact that Mazal Tov looked ordinary and was no match to Sofiya only confirms that this ace up Sulaiman's sleeve was nicely hidden all summer and the man with big sleeves deserves all accolades for pulling off a giant gamble, the filly was backed down from (8/1) to (4/1). Sofiya provided Akshay, who emerged the champion saddle artiste his fourth winner of the day, while Sulaiman topped the list among the trainers.

Rajesh who led in Good Tip and Polished Girl struck through Momentous in the lower division of the Esquire Plate before the bred in the purple filly Queen Of Kyiv who let down  large following in her debut came good in the upper division of the event at the nourishing odds of (8/1). Yash Narredu confidently piloted the goodtype of youngster who has tremendous scope for improvement and it will pay to watch her progress in winter. It was a red letter day for Rajesh and he enjoyed every moment of it.

The vastly improved and in-form Third Avenue brought cheer to the Kolkata camp coming up trumps in the Governor's Cup, the final plum of the season run over a distance of 2400 metres. The winner who had finished a game second behind King's Ransom in the Maharaja's Cup after winning the prestigious Chief Justice's Cup produced another sterling effort to comfortably outclass La Reina and the heavily supported public choice Pissarro from the stables of Sulaiman. Pissarro who had finished ahead of La Reina in the St.Leger run over the gruelling distance of 2800 metres was better-off by five kilos in this test, but Pissarro is no ace and only a blow-hot, blow cold `Jack'  finished last in the four-horse field and this floored the punters.

The Neil Darashah-trained Alcides Synergy and Greenwich from Arjun Manglorkar's yard were the two other winners in the long drawn 10-event card. The former reigned supreme in the Lumbini Stud Plate run over a sprint and Greenwich recorded her second straight success in the lower division of the Camineto Plate. Mighty Swallow from Pradeep's yard who was a costly failure in his last essay again was fancied most, but all he did was swallow a lot of good money again before getting into the list of the many hyped up duds in this campus.
