LAST WISH WINS LEADING STUD TROPHY

By Ikram Khan | 19 Aug 2023 | BANGALORE

Mr Kripa Narayanan & trainer Neil B Devaney leading Last Wish (Antony Raj S Up), winner of The Leading Stud Trophy

After a couple of listless efforts, including his dismal effort when fancied most in his last effort, the Neil Devaney schooled Last Wish stunned the railbirds, making every post a winning one in the final plum of the season, the Leading Stud Trophy run over a distance of seven furlongs on the concluding day of the summer season. Leading pro Antony Raj, who cornered glory recording a grand treble on the final day pushed Last Wish ahead soon after the nine runners came under the starter's flag and never let the initiative slip, comfortably pegging back the public choice Shamrock.

Akshay Kumar, who partnered Shamrock after losing out, tried to win the race in the Stewards room, protesting that Antony Raj had shifted out while he was making his move at the 200M mark and again shifted in towards the rail and as a result he needed to shift out and make his final challenge which cost him a certain race. The objection, it was clear had no merit and was rightly and quickly thrown out by the stipes and stewards. Yukan who was expected to run Shamrock close on the strength of his impressive last start win failed to gain a favourable position early on in the race and only managed to take the third slot behind Shamrock.

The Irfan Ghatala schooled Victoria Punch, who had finished close to ten lengths behind the winner King Of War over a mile long trip last week, it appeared was fitted with a pair of new wings, effortlessly winning the Champion Jockey Trophy in the hands of Antony Raj over an identical trip. The Faraz Arshad-trained Wild Emperor, who had finished more than three lengths ahead of Victoria Punch in that event was easily trounced by Victoria Punch this time out by three lengths. The vastly improved effort in just a week only confirms that Irfan really knows how to make his horses run at a time when he desires to score and get into the winners' list. Top Dancer followed the winner home ahead of the last start winner Nikolina who was fancied strongly to provide an encore.

Leading jockey John was the lone professional to boot home two strongly fancied favourites to the delight of the punters who lost out big on the final two days. John astride the Arjun Manglorkar schooled Millbrook in the Sayonara Stakes run over a distance of seven furlongs had it easy romping home without really working up a sweat. The well-backed public choice tracked the two early leaders The Strikingly and Mighty Swallow before John reminded Millbrook of the task ahead at the top of the straight and the winner responding brilliantly to her master's call produced a fine gallop to put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. The Strikingly did well to hang on and gain the runner-up berth ahead of Chinky Pinky, while Mighty Swallow again finished in the ruck.

Next astride the topweighted Michigan Melody in the Leading Owner Trophy run over a sprint, John assumed command the moment the eight runners came under the starter's flag and powered home nice and easy. Golden Time finished second ahead of Chisox, while the second in demand at the betting ring, Skyfire was never in the hunt. The consistent Michigan Melody from Neil Devaney's yard, who recorded a double can add another win to her tally if her connections place her well at the forthcoming Mysore season.

Earlier, the Kolkata hopeful Imperial Gesture from champion trainer Vijay Singh's yard floored the followers of form failing to make the board in the Champion Trainer Trophy. The grey strongly supported to score, it is learnt burst his blood vessels in the race and as a result failed to display his true potential. The Arjun Manglorkar schooled Norwegian Wood brilliantly piloted by Antony Raj snuffed out the start to finish mission of the long shot Regal Aristocracy piloted by Neeraj Rawal, who in his brave effort to make every post a winning one on the Imtiaz ward found one better close home. Stravinsky from Irfan Ghatala's yard was heavily backed, his connections positive that this well-built son of Western Aristocrat will upset the applecart of the favourite Imperial Gesture, but despite the public choice fading out at the top of the straight, Stravinsky didn't have the legs to challenge the first two and had to rest content with the third place.

The second in demand at the betting ring, Ultimate Chance from trainer Dominic's yard piloted in copybook fashion by G Vivek came up trumps in the opening event, the betway World Humanitarian Day Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The M R Singh schooled Chiraag was a medium of king-sized gamble in this event but the runner-up found Ultimate Chance too hot to handle to the disappointment of his large following.

After losing out on Chiraag, M R Singh struck through the unfancied Caesars Palace in the lower division of the Racing Officials Trophy run over a sprint. The Aravind Ganapathy-trained Cat Whiskers garnered the maximum support in this event, but the favourite back after a minor setback in training found the going tough and struggled to complete the frame. Another fancied contestant Breeze Bluster from Lokanath's yard followed the shock winner home ahead of the Satish Narredu schooled Super Sapphire, who never really looked good to get into the winners' circle.
