SHUBANKER MAKES WARREN SINGH PROUD

By Ikram Khan | 14 Sep 2023 | MYSORE

Traine Warren Singh leading Shubankar (Amyn Merchant Up), winner of The Dennis & Yvonne Jarvis Memorial Cup

Punters returned home evens-stevens after three firm favourites and one well supported second choice Shubankar from Warren Singh's yard entered the winners' circle in the competitive seven-event card framed for Thursday. The gutsy grey was offered at (9/2) in the plum event, King Louis from the stables of James McKeown garnerging the maximum support, offered at (11/4), while the Imtiaz Khan-trained Cyrenius was quoted at (11/2).

Merchant astride the Warren Singh ward pushed Shubankar to the front, the moment the big field of 13 runners came under the starter's flag for the mile long event and never let the initiative slip, packing punch in the final furlong to peg back Cyrenius close home. The promising youngster G Vivek guiding the fortunes of Cyrenius tracked Shubankar closely for most part of the journey before Merchant outwitted Vivek, taking a four-length lead at the top of the straight and gallantly holding on to the advantage gained in the final furlong. Cyrenius did cover a lot of ground, but yet fell short, half-length separating him from the Warren Singh ward, while the public choice King Louis in the hands of Hindu Singh only flattered to deceive, when the race came on a boil at the distance post.

Earlier, the in-form Iron Clad from trainer Santosh's yard registered a fine hat-trick winning the principal added attraction, the M S Suresh Memorial Trophy in emphatic fashion. The winner again fancied strongly by his connections produced another heartwarming effort in the hands of Sai Kumar, who partnered him in his last effort to romp home nice and easy and on the strength of this victory is set to maintain his winning streak when next saddled. Advantageously placed in at the scales, Guiding Force piloted by Anil Baandal gained the runner-up spot ahead of Prime Abbess, who caught the eye, finishing a creditable third despite shifting out badly in the final furlong and racing on the sand track close home. The second in demand at the betting ring, Mazal Tov piloted by Hindu Singh despite gaining a favourable position early on in the sprint event surprisingly failed to display his true potential and finished a poor fourth, much to the disappointment of his supporters who fancied him to upset the applecart of Iron Clad.

After the ten to one long shot Jaguar shocked the followers of form, showing a clean pair of heels to his 11 rivals in the opening event, the lower division of the Squanderer Plate, Treasure Chest from Dominic's yard and Sheer Bliss from the stables of Satish Narredu put the punters on the high road. Jaguar partnered by the four-kilo claimer Pavan shot into the lead, the moment the dozen-horse field came under the starter's flag and sprinting strongly established a  eight-length break at the top of the straight. It was clear at this stage that the rest including the favourite Sky Princess and the strongly fancied Perfect Halo, who was a medium of a king-sized gamble would find it hard to catch the leader. The bird had flown and it was all over, Jaguar despite drifting out powering home in resplendent style. Perfect Halo followed the shock winner home, while Star Citizen edged out the patchy Sky Princess to claim the third spot. Jaguar, it appears has improved most and is likely to provide an encore in the higher class.

The Dominic schooled Treasure Chest was fancied most in the upper division of the event and the topweighted overwhelming even-money favourite in the hands of the promising apprentice Inayat produced a winning gallop in the final furlong to justify his top billing. Pette's Choice powerfully piloted by Jagadeesh finished second ahead of Dawn Rising , while Air Blast only managed to complete the frame. Treasure Chest is on top of his game and all credit to Dominic for sending out the public choice spot on and this proved decisive at end.

On the strength of her impressive second behind the speedy Clifford in her last start in the Bangalore summer season, Sheer Bliss was rightly fancied most in the lower division of the Regency Gold Plate run over a sprint and the favourite to the delight of the followers of form produced a winning gallop in the final furlong to edge out Star Speck who in his attempt to make every post a winning one ran out of gas 50 metres from home. Avicena finished third ahead of Polar Queen and this Arjun Manglorkar trainee will prove to be a different proposition next time out.

In the upper division, Ooh La La from M R Singh's yard opened the favourite at (2/1) before money came pouring in on the Ramesh schooled Tenali, backed down from (8/1) to (2/1). Kiran Rai astride the top weight did produce his best, but that was just not good enough to stop Sharath Kumar-trained Osiris from winning the pulsating contest, by the shortest of margins. Naveen, it must be mentioned rode Osiris like one possessed driving the Sharath ward to gain the day and spoil the big party plans of the heavily backed Tenali. Ooh La La reportedly broke his blood vessels during the race while coming home third ahead of Grizzly, while The Strikingly, stablemate of Osiris was withdrawn from this event.

In what appeared a open race, Coorg General and Natural One from Vishal Yadav's yard headed the betting board in the Talakadu Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The `General' was never in the hunt, while Natural One only managed to save money in place finishing third behind Break Away, who gained the runner-up berth in a tight finish. The ten to one shot Dallas from Srinivas' yard confidently piloted by Afsar Khan came up trumps to the delight of a few fluke-seekers and a solitary punter who cracked the Jackpot, taking a big booty home.
