TEHANI MAKES DR CYRUS POONAWALLA PROUD

By Ikram Khan | 22 Sep 2023 | MYSORE

Dr Cyrus S Poonawalla, Mr S R Sanas and trainer SS Attaollahi leading Tehani (Akshay Kumar up), winner of The Karnataka Race Horse Owners' Association Mysore 1000 Guineas (Gr.3)

It was a good sight. The racing buffs from the royal city loved and appreciated it. The most sought after owner Dr.Cyrus Poonawalla and the chairman of RWITC, S R Sanas proudly leading in the Sulaiman Attaollahi schooled Tehani, who emerged the best of her age and sex, winning the KROA 1000 Guineas, the first classic of the season in a humdinger on Friday. The winner rightly garnered maximum support and the classy daughter of Excellent Art justified her rating and ranking, producing a sparkling gallop at the all-important end to edge out the lesser fancied Fast Pace in a thriller.

After Chindit made Dr.Cyrus proud at Sandown (United Kingdom) on Wednesday, the onus was now on Tehani to maintain the winning streak at home and in the hands of the Chote nawab  Akshay Kumar, Tehani produced her best to the delight of the railbirds, who provided the classy winner and her proud owners a standing ovation.  After the Parvati Byramji schooled Golden Peaks shot her bolt approaching the distance post, Suraj Narredu guiding the fortunes of the second in demand at the betting ring, Auspicious Queen streaked ahead before Akshay packed punch on Tehani making her run on the rails and Vivek brought the lesser fancied Fast Pace into contention in the final furlong. The three were locked in a grim battle charging for home before Akshay and Tehani gained the day, the top saddle artiste producing an exemplary effort to add another classic win to his distinguished list. The gutsy effort of the classy winner warmed the hearts of the followers of form, who confidently supported the filly to register her maiden classic success and the moment Akshay donning the popular silks of Cyrus and Tehani flashed past the post first, a big cheer confirmed that the punters were delighted with the result of the first classic.Tehani's next target will be the blue riband of the season, the betway Mysore Derby, next month and on the strength of this performance, the filly will be a frontliner taking into account that a couple of top colts are nursing injuries and a couple have chosen to parade their skills in the mega event in Charminar City.

On a day Sulaiman, Akshay  and Tehani  stole the limelight, top pro Srinath recorded a good double, booting home the second in demand at the betting ring, Sunshine Coast in the lower division of the Panchgani Plate and driving home the Feroz Khan schooled Sheeba in the Original Vel Racing Trophy run over a sprint. The Monnappa -trained Mystic Divine partnered by the promising apprentice Inayat was strongly fancied to score in the Panchgani Plate, but the well-backed favourite found the going tough and much to the chagrin of her supporters finished a poor fourth. The lesser fancied Dream Machine from Santosh Raj's yard in the hands of Afsar Khan attempted to make every post a winning one and looked in line to obtain the desired result, before Srinath packed punch on Sunshine Coast and the Michael Eshwer trainee responding gamely to her master's call stormed up to take charge and put the issue beyond doubt in the final 100 metres. Ochre did well to gain the runner-up berth ahead of Dream Machine who looks good to earn her second winning bracket in the weeks ahead.

The upper division of the event produced a shock result, the ten to one shot Aquila D'Oro in the hands of apprentice jockey Koshi Kumar making every post a winning one. The favourite Natural One found the sprint trip a trifle sharp to his liking and was seen finishing on fastest at end to gain the runner-up berth ahead of last start winner Red Hills who finished a creditable third.

Sheeba and Seoul from the stables of Ranjeet garnered the maximum support in the Original Vel Racing Trophy. The former in the hands of Srinath stole a march at the top of the straight and then gallantly pegged back the belated effort of another fancied contender Tom Cruiser close home. The topweighted Gold Crested piloted by four-kilo claimer Tousif Khan finished an eye-catching third and is one for the notebook, while it will pay to ignore Seoul until this Ranjeet trainee displays some spark in the morning trials after this dismal performance.

Advantageously placed in at the scales, I Can from Girinath's yard was backed to the exclusion of his 14 rivals in the opening event, the Sidapur Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs and the top fancy readily brought off a successful gamble, sparing more than five lengths to the runner-up Star Azeem, while Emeraldo, who started the favourite before the supporters of I Can went bang-bang in the ring, only managed to save money in place.

In the next event, the lower division of the Psychic Strength Plate run over a mile, Benghazi from Appachu's yard was a medium of a king-sized gamble, backed down from (10/1) to (4/1). And the heavily backed contestant donkey-licked his nine rivals powering home without raising a sweat. Angad had only to guide Benghazi and he did just that, fully confident that Benghazi will do the rest and stand tall at the podium. The favourite Eco Friendly followed Benghazi home ahead of Je Ne Sais Quoi, while Sekhmet completed the frame. Benghazi on the strength of this effortless victory is certain to provide an encore.

The upper division of the event was claimed by the eight to one shot Mystical Merkabah from Narayan Gowda's yard. The winner, who appeared to have improved most after his last start covered acres of ground in the final furlong to edge out the second in demand at the betting ring, Peluche and the lesser fancied Katana in a pulsating finish.

Win My Luv on paper was head and shoulders above her five rivals in the Dr.MAM Ramaswamy Trophy run over a mile. But the connections of Jewel Thief thought otherwise and fancied the Appachu ward to upset the applecart of the Neil Devaney-trained public choice. It didn't happen, Jewel Thief found Win My Luv too hot to handle and had to settle for the runner-up berth. Jewel Thief was no Benghazi and the Appachu camp after making the moolah on Benghazi lost out a portion of their winning, the `Thief' failing in his mission to steal the prized jewel from the crown.
