CYRENIUS WINS CM’S TROPHY IN STYLE

By Ikram Khan | 12 Oct 2023 | MYSORE

Trainer Imtiaz Khan leading Cyrenius (Neeraj Rawal Up), winner of The Chief Minister's Trophy

It again proved to be a good day for the punters. Satisfied with the results obtained, the big bettors, who initially chose to stay away from what they reckoned is a tricky racing centre, are now readily punting big at the Mysore races and merrily carrying home the many green sacks. Six horses were slammed in the bookmakers ring and five emerged easy winners to the delight of the big players. The big strike rate is generating maximum interest among the big bettors and big money is changing hands fast and fine at this centre.

The Tejaswi-trained Fifty Grand was touted a `moral certainty' and the insiders and right connections went bang-bang in the betting ring, many readily putting out `Fifty Grand' bets and as a result the Tejaswi ward, who was offered at (9/2) at the start closed overwhelming favourite at (11/10) before the eight-year-old mare readily made every post a winning one in the lower division of the Bharachukki Plate run over 1100M dash. The topweighted D Golden Cup followed the winner home, while Top Rank finished a creditable third in the hands of the promising apprentice Aniket.

It was a similar story In the upper division of the event. Country's Major from Feroz Khan's yard and the Santosh Rao schooled The Flying Feet garnered maximum support, the latter backed down from (5/1) to (2/1) and the two called the shots before The Flying Feet piloted by Rahul gained the day close home. D Admiral finished third, while the rest, it appeared were just not in the hunt.

On the strength of his impressive effort, second behind the seasoned Shubhankar in his last essay, the Imtiaz Khan-trained Cyrenius was fancied most in the Chief Minister's Trophy, the plum event run over a distance of seven furlongs. The topweighted Last Wish from Neil Devaney's yard partnered by John too had his share of supporters, while a small group of fluke seekers chose to support the Prithviraj-trained Clever Hans. Leading saddle artiste Antony Raj, who was roped in to pilot Cyrenius after Neeraj Rawal opted out, reportedly down with fever, produced an exemplary effort on the winner, tailing the leader Spirit Of Rose for most part of the trip before he assumed command at the top of the straight and then convincingly snuffed out the challenge of Last Wish in the final furlong. Last start winner Peyo did well to finish third ahead of Clever Hans, while Spirit Of Rose made it clear that the seven furlongs journey was beyond her compass.

The Darius Byramji schooled Stormy Ocean again failed to justify favouritism, finishing second behind the lesser fancied Kushaq in the Gool & Soli Poonawalla Memorial Trophy run over a mile. How and on what basis this Darius Byramji trainee gains top billing, each time he chooses to contest defies logic. Saqlain astride the top fancy settled Stormy Ocean nice and easy in the front group, while Kushaq lost a few lengths at the start. But while Kushaq made rapid progress and unleashed a good turn of foot in the final furlong, Stormy Ocean lacked the fire-power to make a race of it and had to rest content with the runner-up berth. Another fancied runner, Twilight Tornado finished on strongly to save money in place, while Analect completed the frame.

First Impression from Appachu's yard was another heavily backed contestant who brought off a successful gamble in the Belur Plate. The winner piloted in copybook fashion by Kiran Rai produced a winning gallop at the all-important end to overhaul the leader Baltimore and quickly put the race to bed in the final furlong. Osiris from Sharath Kumar's yard caught the eye while finishing a creditable third ahead of Ochre, while Chul Bul Rani after showing out in the first three furlongs retired realising that this company was a little too hot for her liking. Nevertheless with the benefit of this run under her belt Chul Bul Rani will be a different proposition when saddled next.

On her last impressive effort, narrowly going down to Natural Gold over a mile, the Rakesh-trained O Manchali was considered a `cinch' in  the concluding event, the Mandya Plate run over a sprint and the public rage in the hands of Aniket made every post a winning one. Advantageously placed in at the scales, Beautiful Oblivian followed O Manchali home, while Crimson Fire from Dinesh Pujar's yard piloted by Shezad Khan surprised most finishing third ahead of his stablemate Break Away who in fact was fancied in place.

Deemed to Fire misfired in the opening event, the Hogenakal Plate run over a mile. The Girinath ward was a medium of a king-sized gamble, backed down from (4/1) to even-money, but to the disappointment of his large following he met a tartar in Russian Romance who proved too good, romping home by a widening margin of four lengths. Natural Fly finished third ahead of Bacchus who raced in patches.
