VIJAY SINGH STARTS ON WINNING NOTE

By Ikram Khan | 14 Oct 2023 | CHENNAI

Trainer Vijay Singh leading Anastasia (Hindu Singh up), winner of The Stewards Cup

Kolkata champion, Vijay Singh, who made Chennai his base after the clouds of uncertainty over the Kolkata season, struck with his very first runner and this will provide a shot in-the-arm for the top pro, who will be a force to reckon with in his maiden season at Guindy considering the fact that he has the required ammunition to strike.

Competing in the Stewards Cup, the plum event, Anastasia from his yard proved too good, unleashing a good turn of foot at the top of the straight to assume command before putting the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Kolkata-based pro Hindu Singh produced a copybook effort on the winner. Last start winner Slainte from James McKeown's yard was again fancied most, but the public choice performed below par and finished a tame third behind the runner-up Pense'e.

A trifle disappointed with Slainte's performance in the feature, the smile was back on the face of James McKeown, the moment the lesser fancied Suryakrishi piloted by leading pro Antony Raj flashed past the post first in the next event, the Chaitanya Chakram Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs. Antony hit the soon after the dozen runners came under the starter's flag and never let the initiative slip pegging back the belated effort of Perfect Blend, while the much fancied Clockwise finished third ahead of the second in demand at the betting ring, Gold Fame, stablemate of Suryakrishi, who in fact was fancied ahead of the winner.

On the strength of his impressive last start success, Sonic Dash from trainer Deepesh Narredu's yard garnered the maximum support in the concluding event, the Ilheus Handicap and the in-form grey partnered by Imran again produced another stellar effort to record his second straight success. The winner, it is needless to mention has touched peak form and is set to complete a hat-trick of wins, when saddled next. Rankoutsider Renegade from the stables of Govindrajan surprised the followers of form gaining the runner-up berth ahead of another long shot Beauty Of The Turf, while the topweighted Illustrious Ruler completed the frame.

Earlier, Deepesh led in Armoury, who easily made every post a winning one in the Elusive Pimpernel Handicap run over 1100M dash. The public choice piloted by five-kilo claimer Koshi Kumar shot out of the gates like a tracer bullet and it was clear half-way home that the overwhelming favourite would canter home. Armoury did just to the delight of  all the big bettors who strongly supported the Deepesh ward. Relic Warrior from Rupa's yard followed the winner home, while Western Girl, fancied sweetly in place by the Govindrajan camp managed to take the third spot, edging out Kallania, a `neck' separating the two at the wire.

On the strength of his suggestive effort, second behind Zaneta in the opening event of the season, Kikata from Anil Kumar's yard was fancied most, but he again met a tartar in Sunny Isles who dropped the biggest bombshell, romping home in the hands of apprentice Ram Nandan. The winner had no takers even while he was offered at (30/1) and much to the chagrin of the favourite punters he upset the applecart of Kikata. Majestic Charmer caught the eye while leisurely coming home third and it will pay to support this Rupa trainee, when saddled next.

A smart last start winner, Soft Whisper from Suresh's yard registered his second straight victory coming up tops in the Urvashi Handicap run over a sprint. The winner piloted by Brisson fresh from his success on the second day readily made every post a winning one. Priceless Beauty finished a game second ahead of Angel Heart, while the top fancy Vijaya raced in patches and eventually finished in the ruck.

With a good run under his belt, Supreme Grandeur from leading pro Robert Foley's yard garnered good support and headed the betting board in the Green Desert Handicap and the game galloper justified the confidence of his supporters producing a winning gallop at the all-important end to bolt in nice and easy in the hands of the promising Farid Ansari. This incidentally was Ansari's 40th winner and he will not be entitled to claim allowance from this day. Choice, who graced the wrong end of the field for most part of the six furlongs trip finished full of running to gain the runner-up berth, while  Trump Baby saved money in place.

The opening event, the Kilimanjaro Handicap produced a shock result, the six to one shot MSG Fantasy from Anil Kumar's yard proving too good for her eight rivals including the heavily supported Presto Power who found the going tough in this set. Daiyamondo did well to finish second behind MSG Fantasy, while the second in demand at the betting ring, Royal Mayfair partnered by Hindu Singh was never in the hunt.
