TOUCH OF GREY WINS DERBY IN STYLE

By Ikram Khan | 29 Oct 2023 | MYSORE

Mr Anil Saraf, Mr Apana Subaiya P and trainer Satish Narredu leading Touch Of Grey (Suraj Narredu up), winner of The 1XBET Mysore Derby (Gr.1)

Like the Indian cricket team in the World Cup, the Narredu juggernaut continues to steamroll all opposition in horse racing and it was no surprise that father Satish and the proud son Suraj Narredu added another Derby victory to their distinguished list, the classy Touch  Of Grey galloping home in  emphatic fashion to land the Derby riches at Mysuru on Sunday. Earlier, Suraj guided home the two overwhelming favourites Immortal Beauty from Satish's yard and the speedy Polished Girl from the stables of brother Rajesh Narredu to make it a memorable D-day.

Astride the on-money favourite Immortal Beauty, Suraj drawn badly (14) in the 15-horse field needed to jump out quick and gain a favourable position, which he did the moment Immortal Beauty came under the starter's flag and the rest was as easy as sweeping autumn leaves from the garden path. The bred in the purple filly on the strength of this performance is certain to provide an encore, when saddled next in the Bangalore winter season. I Can from Girinath's yard followed the winner home, while Fair Counsel finished a creditable third ahead of Natural Gold.

Next guiding the fortunes of the even-money favourite Polished Girl in the Bangalore Turf Club Trophy, Suraj produced a brilliant effort to outwit John partnering another strong contestant Siege Courageous from Prasanna Kumar's yard. Suraj aware that John was travelling on his inside boxed him on the rails before he stole a march at the distance post and John, who needed to shift out and make his final challenge found that the bird had flown and had to rest content with the runner-up berth. This is the second time this season that John has been caught napping on the rails. He lost a certain race on the Prithviraj schooled All Attractive in the Dasara Sprint Championship and today though it was clear at end that he wouldn't have beaten Polished Girl, John lost the race playing into the hands of Suraj at the top of the straight. Ashtar finished third ahead of Dandi Satyagraha, who is finding it hard to make a favourable impression in this class.

In the big one, Suraj appeared confident and relaxed and chose to track the two leaders, stablemate Fearless Joey, who was setting the pace for his fancied stable companion  and River Of Gold who chose to race from the front in the classic 2000M journey. It was clear even before the eight colts and a solitary filly Fast Pace negotiated the final curve that the pipping hot favourite Touch Of Grey would cruise home, Suraj exercising an iron-grip on the champion and the moment he provided the grey his head it was all over bar the shouting, Touch Of Grey powering home to record a deserving classic double. Ruling Dynasty followed the star performer home, while Fast Pace finished ahead of Magnus from Faraz Arshad's yard. The 2:01.33 emphatic effort fetched the owners of Touch Of Grey a handsome purse of Rs 57 lakh.

After the grand exhibition, veteran trainer Warren Singh proudly led in King NI, who recorded a hat-trick winning the RWITC Trophy run over a sprint. The winner was confidently piloted by apprentice jockey Koshi Kumar. Devils Magic from Neil Devaney's yard garnered the maximum support, but the hot favourite piloted by leading pro Antony Raj found the going tough against the winner King NI and the seven to one shot Obsidian.

A trifle disappointed with Devils Magic, Antony produced a copybook effort on the strongly fancied Aralina in the concluding event, the Hyderabad Race Club Trophy and the Arjun Manglorkar ward proved too good for her 14 rivals including Gilded Butterfly, who also was fancied strongly to score, but found Aralina too hot to handle. The `Butterfly' lost the runner-up berth by the shortest of margins to Tom Cruiser.

Earlier, Fifty Grand from Tejaswi's yard recorded her second straight success, coming up tops in the opening event, the lower division of the Delhi Race Club Trophy and another fancied contestant Sparkling Night in the hands of apprentice Inayat edged out the second in demand at the betting ring, Shooting Venus in the upper division.

Ultimate Striker from Lokanath's yard was fancied most in the RCTC Trophy, but the public choice piloted by leading pro Akshay Kumar failed to justify favouritism much to the disappointment of his large following. The three to one shot Osiris from M R Singh's yard entered the winners' circle edging out the topweighted Dallas, while Pastiche from  the stables of Aravind Ganapathy's yard picked up good money in place.
