Andreyan proves his mettle

Mr. R.R.Byramji trainer of Andreyan receiving the Chief Justice's Cup (Gr.3) from Justice S.R.Nayak

The long absence from the track and the lack of a race run did not deter Rashid Byramji trained Andreyan from halting Forever Elegance’s streak of wins which had stretched to five. The resolute win achieved in the Gr.3 Chief Justice’s Cup, the highlight of Saturday’s races suggested that that Andreyan was not rusty. Though C Alford carried two kilos overweight, Andreyan made light of the disadvantage to get the better of Forever Elegance who was shaping to win yet again. Andreyan had lost narrowly to Forever Elegance when these two horses met in the Bangalore Derby in the month of January. Now running on better terms, Andreyan looked a cinch though the lack of a race run and the setback he had suffered after his run in the Gr.1 Invitation Cup at Chennai in March were the worrying factors. Andreyan has been plagued by a stifle problem which has often kept him out of action for long intervals. Though Andreyan lost pace at around the 800 metre marker, he made up ground rapidly after Alford managed to elicit a response from him. Despite swinging wide on turning for home, he got into his rhythm in the final furlong and was getting better at the finish. Though he will incur a penalty of two kilos for winning this graded race, Andreyan will come into strong contention in the Gr.2 Maharaja’s Cup which will be run over one mile and three furlongs. The extended trip will suit Andreyan fine and if he goes into the race without any hiccups, he will be hard to toss though the field is likely to consist of celebrated runners like Southern Regent and Full Speed who will have to concede weight. Ministrel Heights finally got his chance to enjoy his moment of glory when he won the 1200 metres Stewards Cup, a race for horses rated 40 and above, with a measure of comfort. Ministrel Heights had been sacrificed to set pace for his stablemates who were targeted for the classics and only twice in the last one year has he been allowed to show his mettle. There was strong support for Splendid Smith but he once again let down his supporters, with a sluggish start. Ciraja put up a noteworthy show when taking the runner up slot and he could be a force to reckon with during the Mysore main racing season. Auberge was a winner once she shot into the lead in the B K Sreenivasan Memorial Plate (Div I). The only horse which could have posed a serious threat was Faustino but the gelding burst his blood vessels. Auberge has always done well in her first run of the season and her win was in keeping with that trend. Alcindor, who was at the wrong end of the field at the final turn, was full of running to finish second best. Synopsis, who played up on way to the starting gates, and Lusitania, who was fancied to bring off an upset, were both stranded at the gates in the lower division of the race. Favourite Sneak Preview managed to edge out Rivendell close home. Imtiaz Sait’s Stupendous lived up to her name when coming from no where to edge out Hold The Fort in the 1100 metres Camineto Plate. The distance was reckoned to be too sharp for Stupendous who had been tried over a mile trip back home at Mumbai but the poor opposition and the fact that this was the first run of the filly helped her win against the run of expectations. Star Distinction was strongly favoured to win but made no show. Top Cat who had run second behind Miss Beautiful did one better as he shot into the lead in the 1800 metes Sweet Memories Plate and held on to win from a late finishing Freaky Chakra. In the day’s other action, the fluctuating odds on Shalivahana gave a confusing picture to the race goers but there was on confusion once the race was on the boil. Really Romantic stayed doggedly in front. Siroco held off the all-out effort of Shalivahana to take the runner up spot.
