Trainer P Quinn leading Savvy Chic (P S Chouhan up), winner of The Mayfowl Cup

This website tipped all six winners First Tip for Friday's Calcutta races.

The showers predicted earlier in the day decided to bypass RCTC and as a result, racing on Friday afternoon turned out to be immensely entertaining and lucrative for local railbirds as all six favourites obliged – couple of them at highly attractive odds.

The main event – The Mayfowl Cup – turned into a one-horse race as public choice Savvy Chic (Roderic O'Connor-Coccinella) from Patrick Quinn's yard made every post a winning one in the hands of PS Chouhan. Trainer Quinn said in his post-race comments that now that the filly has proved her class, he will run her in ‘terms' races only  in the future. Of trainer Aashay Doctor's three runners which followed the winner home, Awesome One proved to be the best.

Trainer Bharath Singh set the trend for the afternoon when his five-year-old mare Mezcal (Western Aristocrat-Amber Valley) continued from where she had left off in the monsoon with another well-deserved triumph in the day's opener – Thee Aboline Handicap. Jockey Saqlain had to resort to the stick mid-way up the straight but in the end the mare won quite comfortably from a fast finishing Dubai Star.

Trainer Aashay Doctor and jockey Yash Narredu combined fruitfully in the next race of the day when their attractive grey filly Zuma (Sir Cecil-Forest Vision) won the seven-furlong Sound Of Cheers Handicap in resounding manner. She collared the front-runners in the straight and made it a one-horse affair thereafter. The handicapper slapped a penalty of 7.5kg on her for this victory but she may nevertheless win again. This was her maiden start and her mentor needs to be complimented for the thorough preparation given to the filly, making her the showpiece of the paddock.

Trainer Neil Darashah's White Roses is a fashionably bred filly by Speaking of Which out of Roses In Bloom who happens to be a full sister to the well-performed horses Fire Power and Rosina. In the experienced hands of ace jockey Akshay Kumar, White Roses reproduced the form that she had displayed in a recent mock race to win the seven-furlong race for the Regal Star Handicap comfortably. She was available at 14/10. Like her two siblings, the filly may relish an extended trip and will be worth keeping an eye on in the future. The one for the notebook is Toussaint who was an impressive runner-up.

A recent import from western India – Time and Tide (Dali – Starlet) - continued his impeccable form with a thumping victory in the Psychic Flame Handicap. The three-year-old bay colt from Adhiraj Singh Jodha's yard has now reached the highest class and is very much a candidate for the Sprinters' Cup to be held in the first week of March. An elated sporting owner Vikram Bachhawat said in his post-race comments that the colt was performing very well in the west but “I wanted  him to win races at my home centre Calcutta, that's why I brought him here”.

Javed Khan's filly Jamaica (Roderic O'Connor-Touch My Soul)  recorded a bloodless victory in the last race of the day – The Pentire Handicap. She was available at 2/1 and ridden flawlessly by jockey Neeraj Rawal. Following Indian Tiger from an outside draw, Neeraj and Jamaica drew away in the straight to win as they liked. More races are in store for this forward sprinter.
