Aperitivo proves his mettle

Mr. Vijay Singh receiving the Civil Service Cup from Mr. K.K.Misra

Vijay Singh trained Aperitivo overcame several disadvantages including the sharp seven furlong trip that he was asked to essay and won the Civil Service Cup with a measure of comfort from Nordic Star on Saturday. Winner of this year's Calcutta Derby, Aperitivo has been a consistent performer in all the long distance races that he has run in and though he is stoutly bred, he produced enough to exploit the handicap advantage vis-à-vis his achievements on the track. Though Aperitivo was sluggish at the start and lacked the speed to take a forward position, the son of Diffident covered good ground in the straight to win in the shadow of the post. The price quote on Aperitivo was generous considering that he has been an achiever but the Calcutta challenger has always been out of sorts when essaying shorter trips. Nordic Star was also well backed though he had been in out of action from the track for a longish period of time. Cannon Glow ran prominently in front till overtaken by Nordic Star inside the final 350 metres and shaped like a winner even as Aperitivo was working his way on the wide outside from the rear position. However, once he warmed up, Aperitivo quickened nicely and had the measure of the front-running Nordic Star nearer home to provide some excitement to the fare. Discman ran on to finish third. This was a good race outing for Aperitivo who should been seen in action in graded races over longer trips later during the season. Admiral’s Force was another who ran a brilliant race to win the 1200 metres Justice P.Medapa Memorial Cup (Div I). Admiral’s Force, who had run an eye-catching fifth despite being a pace-maker in adverse conditions in the Karnataka Juvenile Million, was backed to the exclusion of his rivals though his breeding suggested that he would be more at home over trips beyond a mile. However, he carried so much class that he comfortably won over this sprint. Mani At Eighty was expected to pose stiff resistance but he appeared soft while Niccoletto, a quality contestant in the fray, was out for an airing. Niccoletto failed to take a striking position but the Tirol progeny moved all by himself to finish an eye-catching second. He reportedly lost a shoe during the race. Trade Fair found the trip sharp though she did well to come with a good stretch run to take the third slot. The lower division was won by Linette in a thriller. Favourite Smart Vision led all the way but the power-packed finish conjured up by Srinath ensured that Linette put her neck ahead at all the important end. India Shining was third while Panmure ran below expectations. Trainer G.Nityanand had a runaway winner in Mazeppa. The son of Mischievous Music who was tuned up to strike in this race, left the field for 'dead' in the final furlong to justify the strong support he received in the ring. There was support in equal measure for Dirham but the top-weight burst his blood vessel and was a miserable last. However, Nitynand’s effort at a double failed narrowly in the concluding race of the day. Rank outsider Mountain Flame hit the front from the word go with Maple Fondant hot on her heels and despite raising hopes in the straight of collaring the front-runner, the favourite found the penalty for her last win, a stopper. Miracle Fantasy came from behind to pip Mountain Flame by a whisker while a late-finishing Shubha Mangala did the same to Maple Fondant who was pushed to the fourth spot in a closely run race. Jockey Warren Singh has been going through a terrible time, not knowing which way to turn to get horses to run to potential. A self-confessed trainer cum jockey, Warren Singh’s Worth A Gold collared big support in the 1100 metres Red Divine Plate but the favourite did not have the speed to tackle Baby Don who won with a great deal of comfort. More to Come, who had showed out in a mock race, was poorly placed at the top of the straight even as Son of Fortune failed to sustain his start to finish bid but he flew home to edge out Settle The Score who had shaped to bring off a big upset. In the day’s other action, Satish Narredu’s Janasheen was backed spiritedly but the moody Cameo Role decided to put her best foot forward and spoilt a good touch. Cameo Role was prominent in the front, with Janasheen closely tracking her but the front-runner was not in a mood to give in and kicked on gamely to upset the calculations of all those who put their faith on the favourite. Amber Prince saved placed money.
