Mr Marthand Singh Mahindra, Mrs Rina Mahindra & trainer S S Attaollahi leading De Villiers (P Trevor Up), winner of The Hyderabad Silver Vase

It was good to see leading trainer Arjun Manglorkar back on the leaderboard. The top pro combined effectively with leading saddle artiste Antony Raj to record a fine treble through three well fancied contestants, Ricardo, Czar and Castaneda. Another highlight on a day most followers of form lost out was the pulse-pounding finish, involving the Parvati-trained Golden Peaks and the Darius Byramji schooled Stormy Ocean in the YS Surender Memorial Trophy, wifey gaining the day by the shortest of margins. Darius in fact saddled Goden Peaks since Parvati was down suffering from a tummy ailment and he, it is needless to mention, was more than happy leading in Golden Peaks.

Competing in the second division of the Kunchikal Falls Plate, Ricardo was fancied to upset the applecart of the on-money favourite Nyaya from Sulaiman Attaollahi's yard and to the delight of the Arjun camp, the well backed second favourite produced a sparkling gallop in the final furlong to romp home a deserving winner. Indian Blues from Prasanna Kumar's yard finished on purposefully to take the second spot ahead of Nyaya, while Silver Swift completed the frame.

Next astride another second choice Castaneda in the Davangere Stakes, Antony produced his best packing punch on the Arjun trainee to outwit the favourite Maroon from Prasanna's yard close home. The public choice piloted by top gun Trevor Patel had stolen a march at the top of the straight and looked set to cruise home before Antony in a never-say-die bid drove home Castaneda to deservingly stand tall at the podium. The topweighted Southern Force from Faraz Arshad's yard had his share of followers too, but he found the first two too hot to handle and had to rest content with the third spot.

In line for a treble on the top fancy Czar in the concluding event, the first division of the Kunchikal Falls Plate, Antony took no chances, hitting the front the moment the nine runners came under the starter's flag and never let the  initiative slip making every post a winning one to the joy of Arjun, who proudly led in Czar, back in the winners' circle. Mazal Tov from the stables of Neil Devaney followed the leader home ahead of Roman Spirit from Dominic's yard. The second and third placed contestants too were strongly supported in the betting ring, but none could stop Arjun and Antony from stealing the limelight.

On the strength of his satisfactory effort, back after a long lay-off at Mysore and the fact that he was producing brilliant performances on the trial track, Ravishing Form from Parvati's yard partnered by Saqlain enjoyed the top billing in the Hyderabad Silver Vase run over a distance of seven furlongs. But much to the chagrin of the followers of form the top fancy after hitting the front and calling the shots for most part of the trip went ``phut' like a pricked balloon and only managed to finish a tame third behind the two hopefuls from Sulaiman's yard, De Villiers, who emerged the winner and the runner-up Yukan. De Villiers in fact was gracing the wrong end of the field, Trevor in no hurry to make his move and the moment he setalight the winner it was all over bar the shouting, De Villiers powering home to overhaul Yukan and the tiring Ravishing Form in resplendent style.

The topweighted Vivaldo on the strength of his impressive victory in his last essay rightly opened the favourite in the YS Surender Memorial Trophy run over a mile, but soon money came pouring in on the Parvati schooled Golden Peaks and the price on Vivaldo shockingly drifted out to (3/1). While Saqlain partnering Golden Peaks and Antony guiding the fortunes of Stormy Ocean warmed the hearts of the railbirds producing a pulsating finish, top saddle artiste Akshay Kumar, who drew a blank from his three riders, blotted his book producing a below par effort on the Prasanna ward. Make no mistake this is not the true run of Vivaldo and the Prasanna ward needs to be persisted with when next saddled.

Earlier, Douglas from Neil Devaney's yard dropped a bombshell coming up trumps in the Snap Plate. The 20 to one long shot piloted by Pradeep streaked through an opening on the rails to peg back the even-money favourite Forty Niner and the second in demand at the betting ring, Tripitaka. The runner-up from Dominic's yard in defeat was not disgraced and lives to fight another day.

Double Vision from MR Singh's yard garnered the maximum support in the Godavari Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. Her connections passed the good word that the filly will be hard to down in this set and soon she was hammered down from (7/2) to (18/10) in the betting ring. But all that the strongly fancied public choice did was finish a tame third behind the the lesser fancied winner Altamonte and Elite Agent. Altamonte piloted by Jagadeesh was the second, last to first winner on the day, later De Villiers in the hands of Trevor producing a similar last to first effort in the plum.

The seven to one shot fast Response in the hands of four-kilo claimer Tousif Khan came out tops in the opening event, the third division of the Kunchikal Falls Plate run over 1100M dash. Sea God from Prasanna Kumar's yard opened the favourite, but soon the price on the topweighted contestant alarmingly shot up and the wise punters smelling a rat chose to ignore Sea God, who was never in the hunt and eventually finished in the ruck. Elizabeth Regina from Prithviraj's yard on default ended up firm favourite and the improving filly finished third behind the runner-up Dallas Drifter. Elizabeth Regina with this good run under her belt will prove to be different proposition next time out.
