CELLINI STUNS SMALL FIELD TO LIFT THE RCTC TROPHY

By Usman Rangila | 03 Dec 2023 | MUMBAI

Trainer Bezan Chenoy leading Cellini (S Saqlain up), winner of The Royal Calcutta Turf Club Cup

The seven-year old bay gelding Cellini gave a gutsy performance to outwit both Son Of A Gun and Joaquin to claim the Royal Calcutta Turf Club Trophy, the main event run over six furlongs on Sunday. Least fancied among the four contestants, veteran Bezan Chenoy-nurtured Cellini raced within striking distance of early leader Joaquin and Son Of A Gun till the last furlong where S. Saqlain asked the bay for an effort. Cellini (Arazan – Yomalo) responded gallantly to inch closer with every stride and overwhelmed the fancied duo close home. Runner-up Son Of A Gun hung out under pressure just after tackling Joaquin and failed to gain the upper hand when challenged by Cellini. Joaquin ended third ahead of Baby Bazooka, who graced the wrong end after a sluggish start.

Apprentice Navnath Bhosale stole the limelight by confidently guiding two fancied winners, both in a tight finish. Navnath's first success came astride Sea The Sun, hailing from his master Pesi Shroff's yard, who shot into lead as the six-horse field embarked on the nine furlong journey for the Sir Rahimtoola Chinoy Trophy. Sea The Sun (Sea The Moon – Aspen Sun) bowled along merrily in front and brought the field into the home stretch where Neeraj Rawal-steered favourite Geographique moved past Golden Kingdom and threw a challenge at the runaway leader. Navnath drove out the bay colt to repel Geographique's threat and kept him going under the whip to record his third career victory by half length. Own Voice was a tame third ahead of Regal Command. Golden Kingdom ran disappointingly to finish off the board.

Navnath had to fight tooth and nail aboard HJ Antia-schooled mare Sussing in the last race to achieve a double. Sussing (Sussex – Safekeeping) lay a handy fourth as stable-mate Slam Dunk led the field into the straight. Spiritual Rock slipped through the rails to take charge and flattered till Navnath brought Sussing into contention. Sussing, encouraged by Navnath's urging, first wore down Spiritual Rock and then staves off the threat posed by Silver Steps. The favourite lasted out to win by a neck over Silver Steps and a head away was Spiritual Rock in a three-way finish. Dowsabel ended a close fourth.

Akshay Kumar, who is facing a three-month ban slapped by the Hyderabad Race Club's stewards' body, rode two winners – Field of Dreams and Irish Gold, both sent out by Dallas Todywalla. Two-year old Field of Dreams allowed Fast Approach to bring the field into the straight and was immediately alerted to her task by Akshay. Field of Dreams (Leitir Mor – Realmsoffantasy) spurted well in response and breezed past Fast Approach to oblige her followers. Esconido finished second whilst Jade, who was slowly out from the gates, improved in the straight to end in the money. Fast Approach retired to be fourth.

Irish Gold raced close on the heels of speedy Maysara, who threw in her towel in the last furlong and half. Akshay spurred Irish Gold (Roderic O'Connor – Irish Bailey) into the lead only to find Trevor Patel-partnered Generosity breathing heavily down his neck. In the ensuing battle for the Anne Wright Trophy, both Irish Gold and Generosity went stride for stride in the last furlong with the former emerging triumphant in an exhilarating climax. Lord Vader and Outlander followed them home.

The three-year old maiden Endurance registered the most comfortable win of the day to claim the Director General of Police Trophy, run over a mile. No-hoper Luminosity tore away from the pack to set a fast pace and had Lion King, Flashing Famous and Kariena in tow. Favourite Kariena went in pursuit of Luminosity in the straight but just when she came alongside the leader, Endurance finished on with a rattle. Tuned to the moment by Imtiaz Sait and placed to score in the handicap event, Endurance (Speaking of Which – Supreme Princess) displayed a splendid turn of foot as apprentice Mustakim Alam switched gears when the field turned for home. With just over a furlong left for the wire,  Endurance came with a blistering gallop and reduced the event to a one-horse race when he surged past Kariena. Lion King held on grimly to the third slot from Impunity. Endurance can repeat if he doesn't receive a stiff penalty for his maiden success.

SK Sunderji-saddled Nelson River improved on his last effort at Pune, where he ended a close second to Zukor, and landed the spoils for his connections in the day's opening event. R. Ajinkya-ridden Nelson River (Planetaire – Midnight Wind) unleashed a powerful run in the straight to collar Sentinel less than a furlong away from home. Runner-up Sentinel had assumed command at the turn but failed to sustain against the favourite. Jetfire and Untitled completed the judge's frame.
