DESTROYER LIFTS 2000 GUINEAS

By Epsom Ace | 12 Dec 2023 | KOLKATA

Mr Cheriyan Abraham and Trainer P Quinn leading Destroyer (P S Chouhan Up), winner of The Confluence Calcutta 2000 Guineas (Gr.3)

Patrick Quinn – trained Destroyer kept his date with destiny at RCTC on Tuesday when the shortest priced favourite of the day made every post of the 2000 Guineas race a winning one.  The got-abroad son of Exceed and Excel out of Abaq was taken to the helm of the affairs by jockey PS Chouhan as the gates opened and stayed there all the way without raising a sweat. Ramiel followed him for most part but lost the runner up berth to Hornbill in the closing stages of the mile race. The victory completed a brace for Quinn as one race earlier he had led in Oh My Darling (Sedgefield – Spark Of Silver) in the race for the Scarlet Prince Handicap. The three-year-old grey filly broke out of the maiden ranks in style with a start-to-finish triumph in a mile race. She was piloted by western India apprentice N Bhosale who made no mistake. The favourite Zuma followed her for most part but lost the runner-up berth to Amber Knight in the last furlong.

Both apprentice Bhosale and PS Chouhan were delayed at the airport and had to be replaced a race earlier in the sprint for the Daring Don Handicap with eleven runners in the fray. They were thus replaced on their respective mounts – Gazino and Thousand Words – by Rupal Singh and Trevor. The replacement of a highly competent apprentice claiming a 3kg allowance atop the top-weight favourite Gazino by a rider whose current local statistics are nothing to write home about, left form-workers in disarray. Rather surprisingly Gazino still closed as the tote favourite and quite expectedly finished a tame third. The dearth of apprentices at this centre was sadly exposed by this incident which proved rather unfair to punters who follow money blindly. The race was pocketed by Neil Darashah- strained Etosha (Phoenix Tower-Namibia) who was given a superb ride by jockey JH Arul. The five-year-old gelding from Bangalore proved his mettle with a comprehensive victory over Hidden Gold and Gazino who fought for the minor placings.

The afternoon commenced with Vikash Jaiswal-trained Tender Heart (David Livingston-Shababiya) making every post a winning one in the sprint for the Aristotle Handicap. The favourite Trident Star was never in it and finished in the ruck. Tickerfinished a good second. In the very next event – The Adabella Handicap – jockey Neeraj Rawal atop the piping hot favourite Jamaica (Roderic O’Connor-Touch My Soul) had to pull out all stops to keep at bay Yuvi and Magnite who looked menacing in the final furlong. The Javed Khan-trained filly thus completed back-to-back wins. She seems more comfortable over 1100 metres.

Shyam Habbu-trained Kiefer (Roderic O’Connor-Keukemhof) brought the day’s proceedings to a close with a fabulous start-to-finish victory in the 2000 metres race for the Moon Forest Handicap. The top-weight favourite completed a double for PS Chouhan. Rhapsody In Green and Trevor were a gallant second while second favourite Sagittarii disappointed to finish a dismal last of four.
