KALLANIA WINS IN THRILLER

By Ikram Khan | 15 Dec 2023 | CHENNAI

Mr Subodh Chand Bothra & trainer Suraj Shaw leading Kallania (P Sai Kumar up), winner of The Isla Bonita Handicap

Did rain play a spoilsport or the thundershower before the start of the plum event came as a relief to the punters hit hard by the results obtained in the first four races is difficult to answer, but going by the trend it was clear that the railbirds were pretty happy to close their accounts on Friday and wait for the form to play true next week.

Sacre Couer from Ramanathan's yard came up tops in the opening event. The price on the winner, who opened the favourite alarmingly drifted outand Sacre Couer was available at (6/1). The followers of form smelling a rat chose to stay out and ignore Sacre Couer, while some chose to pin their hopes on Royal Supremacy. Sacre Couer, who had caught the eye while finishing second behind Kikata in her last essay produced another satisfactory effort in the hands of Koshi Kumar to enter the winners' circle. Raffinato piloted by Hindu Singh followed the leader home, while Ocean Love from Ajith Kumar's yard managed to save money in place. Favourite on default, Royal Supremacy performed below par and finished down the field.

A model of consistency, Relic Warrior from trainer Rupa's yard was expected to shed his maiden status, pitted against eight moderate rivals in the upper division of the Supremacy Handicap run over a distance of 1100 metres, but again much to the disappointment of his supporters, Relic Warrior met a tartar in Danny's Girl, who dropped a bombshell coming up trumps in the hands of Soufyane Moulin. Presto Power finished third, while the two other lesser fancied runners, Armoury and Happiness were not in the hunt.

The lower division of the event was claimed by another 20 to one rankoutsider, who edged out the public rage Seeking The Stars (40/100) to floor the punters after the first two knock out punches delivered by Sacre Couer and Danny's Girl pushed them back against the wall. Mayflower from Govindrajan's yard was strongly fancied in place and the mare to the delight of her supporters performed creditably to take the third spot ahead of Preakness.

The Deepesh-trained Ruling Star, who had finished second behind the highly rated Lord Moi and the Kolkata hopeful Grace from the stables of Vijay Singh topped the betting board in the Isla Bonita Handicap before a flood of money minutes before the start of the seven furlongs event saw Ruling Star closed a firm favourite at (5/4), while Grace was quoted at end at (2/1). The `Jodi' who many considered a certainty quickly went out of the window, the moment the ten to one shot Kallania from Suraj Shaw's yard hit the front and stretched out well to peg back the belated effort of Windsor Walk. Ruling Star finished a close third, while all that Grace did was take a lot of good money down the drain.

Hit hard by the shock results most punters chose to go with the Arjun Manglorkar-trained Bengaluru challenger Salento in the feature before a sharp shower forced the stewards and stipes to cancel the remainder of the three races. The feature event, the Smt. Gayatri Devi Memorial Cup is now scheduled to be held on Dec 24.
