KNOTTY LEGEND MAKES A SMASHING DEBUT

By Ikram Khan | 22 Dec 2023 | BANGALORE

Mr Ashok Ranpise & trainer Prasanna Kumar leading Knotty Legend (P Trevor Up), winner of The Frankel Trophy

Trainer Imtiaz Khan hurled two grenades in the final two events that hit the railbirds hards, many limping back home and searching for the balms in the medical kits after the eight to one long shot Splendido and rankoutsider Spectacular, which paid a handsome dividend of Rs 314 on a tenner at the tote window, stunned and floored the followers of form on Friday.

The Warren  Singh schooled Grizzly in fact was the first to provide the shock treatment, upsetting the applecart of the strongly fancied Never Give In from Arjun Manglorkar's yard in the Devarayanadurga Stakes. John astride the public choice had stolen a march at the top of the straight and looked set to score before AR Pradeep guiding the fortunes of the least fancied Grizzly, who had no takers at (25/1) stormed up to challenge the top fancy and beat him in the run-up to the post. The shock victory pushed the punters back against the wall before the two Prasanna Kumar winners, Vivaldo and Knotty Legend put them back on the road to recovery. The bounce back didn't really help avoid the disaster at end, two grenades sinking the boat.

A facile last start winner, Stravinsky from trainer Irfan Ghatala's yard was the top fancy in the JB Mallaradhya Memorial Trophy run over a distance of 2000 metres. The overwhelming favourite piloted by the in-form Alex Rozario travelled nice and easy all through the backstretch,  but the moment he was asked to produce a winning gallop at the all-important end, the public choice struggled to quicken and finished a tame third behind the topweighted Splendido who made every post a winning one in the hands of John and the runner-up Granpar from Sulaiman Attaollahi's yard.

Next in the concluding event, the Chitradurga Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs, the friendless Spectacular in the hands of Ramu pegged back the belated effort of the second in demand at the betting ring Golden Time piloted by G Vivek. The winner, withdrawn in her last essay was out to get a good run under her belt and in her free front running exercise stayed in front till the very end to stun the punters. Advantageously placed in at the scales, High Opinion from the stables of Pradeep Annaiah'garnered the maximum support on the strength of his impressive showing in his last start albeit in the lower category. But the grey this time out failed to repeat the suggestive effort and much to the disappointment of a large following finished in the ruck. Classic Charm partnered by Imran Chisty finished a game third and it will not be long before this Ganapathy ward earns his cornbill this winter.

Imran Chisty earlier booted home the four to one shot Saigon from Aravind Ganapathy's yard to a thrilling victory in the Gokak Falls Plate run over a distance of 2000 metres. Regal Aristocracy on the strength of her good second behind Stravinsky in her last start over a mile was backed to the exclusion of her 11 rivals, but much to the chagrin of all her supporters she lost more than ten lengths at the start from which she never recovered and this cost all the big bettors dear taking in to account that this Imtiaz Khan trainee was touted as one safe bet in the seven-event card. Anadale who lost out by the shortest of margins appears to be a blow hot, blow cold type taking into account that she lacks the consistency required to keep the winning habit going.

The game Je Ne Sais Quoi provided the Azhar Ali camp a lot to cheer, coming up trumps in the opening event, the Sharavathi Plate run over a mile. The winner backed down from (7/2) to (2/1) produced a good turn of foot at the all-important end to outwit his nine rivals in the hands of G Vivek. Last start winner Russian Romance again produced a stellar effort but that was just not good enough to stop the Azhar Ali ward from  standing tall at the podium. Altamonte did well to save money in place, while the second in demand at the betting ring, Silver Token from Warren Singh's yard only managed to complete the frame.

Vivaldo, who had failed to display his true potential in his last start thanks to the injudicious effort of Akshay Kumar, provided G Vivek an easy ride to success in the Kolar Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The winner was fancied strongly and he readily justified the confidence of his supporters, while Prime Abbess in line for a hat-trick, the Sulaiman-trained Shabelle and Ravishing Form from Parvati Byramji's yard performed below par. Ravishing Form, it is clear is struggling to come into his own taking into account that the classic winner has failed to improve from his last three starts after coming back from a serious setback in training.

After the success of Knotty Charmer, the `Magnificent Seven' have picked up another goodtype of youngster from the Bishan Stud. Knotty Legend like `Charmer' made a smashing winning debut coming up tops in the Frankel Trophy run over a 1100 metres dash. Trevor astride the winner chose to bide his time on the winner who produced a sparkling gallop in  the final furlong to overhaul the leader Finley and power home in emphatic fashion. Considering the fact that leading trainer Prasanna Kumar is dominating the juvenile scene, he will wear the champion trainer crown if the youngsters from his yard continue to make merry in the weeks ahead.
