RUBY RED MAKES IT THREE IN A ROW AT MALAKPET

Punters, who were expecting some relief in the aftermath of the fiasco witnessed at the Malakpet racecourse on Monday last, found themselves at the receiving end yet again on Saturday. Of course, they were spared of the shock treatment as experienced in the case of Beauty Blaze's success, but the fancied runners continued to flop and inexplicably so in a couple of instances. Interestingly, barring the feature race, there were six sprint events in the day's card of seven.

The day started with the speedy display given by friendless In Proposito (Planetaire – Abigail), who claimed the Step Aside Plate for two-year old juveniles in a start-to-finish dash. The Abhay Singh-ridden colt from RH Sequeira's yard jumped out smartly from the gates to head the small field of six and lasted out to win from Cannon Rose and Rolls Royce. Runner-up Cannon Rose warmed up late while favourite Rolls Royce, who had come in for some spirited betting close to race time, ran all over the place before finding her rhythm close home to finish third. Debutant Linda ran prominently behind the leader throughout but failed to quicken and probably needed this run as she ended a length behind Rolls Royce.

The three-year old filly Ruby Red made it three in a row at Malakpet when claiming the Chaitanya Chakram Trophy run over seven furlongs. Entrusted to Afroz Khan on this occasion by trainer Laxman Singh, Ruby Red (Roderic O'Connor – Black Magic Woman) was settled alongside Strauss as Star Medal set the early pace and had Reigning Beauty and Midsummer Star in chase as he brought his rivals into the straight. In the final run-in, Ruby Red unleashed a powerful run in response to her rider's call and the winner was sighted a long way from home when she surged past Star Medal. Favourite Strauss, who was conceding over 8kgs to the winner, proved no match despite trying hard to catch her in the straight. Star Medal retired to be third behind Strauss whilst late-finishing Capriati and Decoy ended close on his tail.

Laxman had earlier led in Dali's Destiny (Dali – Dance To Destiny), who graduated from the maiden ranks in the hands of apprentice Ajay Kumar. Dali's Destiny raced close on the heels of no-hoper Exeter, who led the field in the initial stages of the race but packed up as soon as the field turned for home. Carrying feather weight on his back, Dali's Destiny swiftly assumed command to put the issue beyond his rivals. Park Lane ran on to be second ahead of Deccan Daisy and Great Giver. Favourite Chica Bonita tried to come through the shortest way home in the last two furlongs but was held up behind Ametican Flame and finished off the board.

Donald Netto-saddled Life's Living showed remarkable improvement over her last-outing performance at the end of her monsoon campaign when she swept her rivals off their feet in the Zoom Zoom Plate (Div-I). Life's Living (Be Safe – Hi Life) surprised both Alexina and Adbhut as she zoomed ahead from the innermost draw and went on to show a clean pair of heels to her rivals over the five and half furlong sprint. Kuldeep Singh (Sr.) astride Life's Living had the race well sewn up before runner-up Happy Go Lucky could cause any damage. Alexina woke up to her task late and could only finish third, a neck of Adbhut.

The 5kg-claimer Shivansh showed admirable confidence after Kenaf threw her head up as the field of eight took off from the barriers. Despite losing ground at the start, the lad kept his cool and swiftly got Kenaf to be in close contention behind the front-running pair, Magnum and Divine Connection. Magnum, who was next in demand after Kenaf, wrest the lead from Divine Connection but failed to sustain as the latter regained the upper hand inside the last furlong. Meanwhile, Kenaf (Dali – Dallaah) was ridden out resolutely by Shivansh and the Leo D'Silva-schooled filly got up just in time to nail both Divine Connection and Magnum in the shadow of the winning post. Garnet ran thereabouts to be fourth suggesting that she could be better off if given an opportunity to compete against her own age group.

The Ananth Vatsalya-trained filly Warwick proved too good despite conceding weight to her rivals in the handicap event for maidens. Warwick (Dandified – Actual) raced keenly behind Thunder Knight and Zadelle till the field turned for home where jockey Ashhad Asbar thrust her through the shortest route home. The bay filly moved rapidly ahead and accelerated well to go sailing clear of her rivals. Both Mix The Magic and Antidote, who were heavily backed in the betting ring, were outpaced and could only take the minor places behind the winner. Zadelle ended fourth.

Sadiya (formerly named Solar Princess) was another Vatsalya-groomed filly who shed her maiden status in the day's last race. Sadiya (Sussex – Arikara) came with a sustained run from way back in the straight to overwhelm My Master close home. Jockey Deepak Singh went flat out astride the temperamental grey filly to help her achieve her maiden success by keeping the pack of nine runners, who followed her home in a close huddle, at bay. Reining Queen, the winner's stable-mate, finished second with My Master and Blue Brigade just behind.
