ONCE YOU GO BLACK WINS PLUM

By Ikram Khan | 24 Dec 2023 | CHENNAI

Form played traunt, a solitary favourite and that too a visitor from Bengaluru, Galactical justifying favouritism in the eight-event card dominated by the lesser fancied winners on Sunday. The plum event, the Smt.Gayatri Devi Memorial Cup run over a mile was claimed by the second in demand at the betting ring, Once You Go Black from the stables of James McKeown, confidently piloted by Julien Moulin. Bengaluru raider Salento from Arjun Manglorkar's yard was fancied most, but the public choice piloted by leading pro Antony Raj after being favourably placed at the top of the straight failed to raise a winning gallop and shockingly finished down the field. The topweighted Priceless Gold partnered by Vinod Shinde after a brief duel with the winner in the final furlong hung on to gain the runner-up berth ahead of Trevalius, stablemate of the winner.

Vinod Shinde and Golden Warrior from Deepesh Narredu's yard came up tops in the next event, the Ruffian Handicap run over a mile. The winner opened the favourite before the Vijay Singh camp went bang-bang on Truth In Wine and the filly, who had caught the eye in her last start in the Bangalore summer season closed (6/4) after opening at (7/2), while Golden Warrior was quoted at (5/2) before the 11 runners came under the starter's flag run over a mile. Vinod Shinde in no mood to take chances pushed the Deepesh ward to the front and dictated the pace before packing punch in the straight to peg back the challenge of Truth In Wine, who found the winner too hot to handle. The topweighted Ganton from McKeown's yard, fancied strongly in  place, did well to finish third ahead of Sian.

The Rupa schooled Wonderful Era gained top billing in the concluding event, the Polish Filler Handicap run over a sprint, but the strongly supported public choice partnered by Sai Kumar raced in patches and failed to save money even in place. Lesser fancied Mayflower from Govindrajan's yard piloted by Dhanu Singh produced a sparkling gallop in the final furlong to romp home a deserving winner. Despacito finished second ahead of Pacific, who appears set to earn her cornbill in the weeks ahead.

Earlier, the Pradeep Anniah-trained Galactical on the strength of his fine showing in his last start, second behind the in-form Seige Courageous at home looked head and shoulders above his nine rivals including the local mainhope Dedicate from Vijay Singh's yard and to the delight of his large following made every post a winning one in the hands of Arvind Kumar, who really didn't need to exert himself, while Galactical took him on a cool ride. Dedicate finished second ahead of Timeless Romance, while last start winner Montelena completed the frame. Galactical, it must be mentioned is on top of his game and is certain to add to this victory back home.

The 10 to one shot Pense'e floored the followers of form in the upper division of the Northern Baby Handicap run over a distance of six furlongs. The Bengaluru challenger was touted a `moral certainty' after his two straight wins at his parent-centre, but the half-money favourite partnered by Hindu Singh failed to break level from the gates losing more than 10 lengths and that resulted in a lot of good money going down the drain. Sonic Dash followed impressive winner Pense'e home, while Wind Symbol finished a suggestive third and is one for the notebook.

The Sebastian schooled speedy customer Clockwise was fancied most in the PM Antony Memorial Trophy run over a distance of seven furlongs. The favourite met a tartar in Royal Icon who made every post a winning one in the hands of the promising apprentice Ram Nandan. The topweighted Renegade from Govindrajan's yard finished third ahead of Opus One, who too had a fair share of his followers who lost out big money investing win and place on the grey who only finished fourth.

In the event for juveniles Cavallo Volante from B Suresh's yard was the top fancy on the strength of his impressive performances on the trial track. The on-money favourite piloted by Antony Raj much to the disappointment of his supporters failed to match strides with the Fahad Khan trainee Persian Rock who made a winning debut in the hands of Ashhad Asbar. The 20 to one shot appears a goodtype of youngster and it will pay to support him again, whenever next saddled. Cavallo Volante, it is needless to mention will improve with this run under his belt and will prove to be a different proposition next time out.

Stern Maiden was another long shot who stunned the railbirds in the opening event, the Seattle Slew Handicap run over 1000 metres. Night Jar from Robert Foley's yard was the favoured one, but all the filly did was finish a tame third behind the winner Stern Maiden and the runner-up Ocean Love who was sweetly fancied by the insiders and right connections in place.
