MIREYA PREVAILS IN A THREE-WAY FINISH FOR WANAPARTHY CUP

By Usman Rangila | 25 Dec 2023 | HYDERABAD

Trainer G Sandeep leading Mireya (Ajay Kumar Up), winner of The Wanaparthy Cup

The five-year old mare Mireya put in a spirited run in the final stages of the Wanaparthy Cup to stun both Sun Dancer and Its On right on the winning post. G. Sandeep-trained Mireya (Planetaire – Win and Enjoy) raced in the mid-bunch as Mark My Day took charge of the running with Star Racer, Pinatubo and the rest following him over the six-furlong trip. As the front-runners packed up in the last two furlongs, it was Sun Dancer and Its On who began disputing the lead. Meanwhile, finding a wall of horses ahead and realising that there was no chance of getting a clear run towards the inner rails, apprentice Ajay Kumar brought Mireya on the outer lane and drove her with a frenzy. The bay mare just flew in response and was easily the fastest finishing horse towards the end. Mireya virtually snatched the race from right under the nose of Sun Dancer and Its On. Sandeep’s decision to exploit Ajay’s 3.5kg allowance had paved the way for Mireya’s hat-trick triumph as indicated by the tantalising three-way finish. The first three horses were separated by a neck each while Fly Tothe Stars crept up almost unnoticed to finish fourth just half-length away.

The chances of RH Sequeira-nursed Miracle Mary in the day’s opening event were once again fancied though not on the scale as witnessed during her previous runs. Those who chose to ignore her did not regret it as she failed to figure on the board in the race where D Yes Boss finally had her galloping shoes on. Sucker Punch and Spectacular Cruise headed the field on sufferance and were still in command till the last half-furlong. Ashhad Asbar-steered D Yes Boss, who lay at the wrong end of the field till after entering the home stretch, started devouring ground when alerted to her task and went flashing past the front-running duo. Bold Beauty made progress close home and was hard-ridden to take the runner-up berth ahead of Sucker Punch and Master Touch. Spectacular Cruise appeared to have saved her best for some other day as she retired to the fifth spot. Miracle Mary ended down the field and beat only one home in the field of seven.

Later in the day, a similar fate awaited Sequeira’s ward Hero of the East. A. Imran Khan-ridden Hero of the East was widely fancied to win as he was running on demotion over a trip which was considered to be a suitable one. The favourite raced abreast of Caraxes, who decided to go on a pillar-to-post mission, and was in the hunt till the half-way mark but suddenly fell back. Voice of a Dream then joined Caraxes and both brought the field into the straight. While they entered the straight and were busy disputing the issue, apprentice Kuldeep Singh had given Alpine Girl her head just before the final bend. The Jasbir Singh-groomed filly lengthened her strides in the straight and collared the leaders with just under a furlong away from home. Alpine Girl (Sedgefield – Pickwick Papers) soon pulled away from her rivals to score an emphatic victory. Voice of a Dream edged out Caraxes for the second slot while Aerial Combat completed the judge’s frame. Hero of the East dropped to the last position after Imran stopped riding him in the final furlong or so.

Asbar completed a double aboard The Thunder, who just about scraped through in the Trade Fair Plate. The Thunder, saddled by B. Mukesh Kumar, displayed good initial speed on this occasion to grab the lead at the start and was followed by Tripurari, Splendour on Grass and Maverick till the field straightened for home. What looked to be a comfortable lead for The Thunder opposite the grand stands started diminishing gradually as Ajay showed Cabello the daylight in the straight. The bay mare came with a threatening run at The Thunder (Declaration of War – Days of Thunder) but Asbar packed enough power in his riding to escape her clutches and score by a neck. Bangor On Dee came from way off the pace to finish in the money ahead of Tripurari. If nothing else, the law of averages seemed to have caught up with Maverick, who ran second last.

Ajay had also finished second best earlier astride Silver Act, who found the winning post coming too soon for her liking. It was KSV Prasad Raju-schooled Sangreal (Sanus Per Aquam – Sans Pareil), who produced a terrific run when asked for an effort closer home by jockey Santosh Raj to swoop down on last-outing winner Ok Boss and went on to keep fast-finishing Silver Act at bay. Ok Boss ended a close third ahead of Pontefract. Crimson Rose was in hot pursuit of Ok Boss from the word go but faded out when the race came to a boil to run and ran fifth.

Trainer Mukesh achieved a back-to-back double when Calista Girl ran true to form and justified her favouritism in the hands of the 5kg-claimer Shivansh. Calista Girl (Cougar Mountain – Incandescent) exploited her initial speed to seize initiative by brushing aside the attempt of Star Cruise to do so and showed a clear pair of heels to her rivals. Shivansh kept her going hands and heels to register an easy win over Cosmico, Shadow Fax and Subha who were late to find their rhythm and followed the winner home in that order.

The on-money favourite Hard To Toss was backed to the exclusion of her rivals in the concluding event of the day but her chances went for a toss soon after the gates opened. Precious Gift shifted in badly and bumped both Hard To Toss and Golden Forza, who had to be steadied and were all but squeezed out of the contest in the process. Ambitious Star quickly seized the opportunity to hit the front with Golden Forza and Hard To Toss in chase and appeared to be making it before Precious Gift made her bid from the inner rails. Prasad Raju-trained Precious Gift (Phoenix Tower – Anmol) flourished under apprentice Ajay’s urging and got the better of Ambitious Star in the dying moments of the race. Saint Emilion also came with a big run in the final furlong as both Golden Forza and Hard To Toss weakened but failed to collar Precious Gift and lost by a neck. Ambitious Star ended third, just ahead of Exponent.
