PHILOSOPHY WINS ICE BREAKER TROPHY

By Ikram Khan | 30 Dec 2023 | BANGALORE

Trainer Imtiaz Khan leading Philosophy (Antony Raj S up), winner of The Ice Breaker Trophy

A couple of coups came good, while a couple of gambles went down by the shortest of margins on a day leading pro Antony Raj recorded a fine treble including guiding home the overwhelming favourite Philosophy to an impressive victory in the plum event, the Ice Breaker Trophy run over a mile. Antony Raj apart, trainer Warren Singh to the delight of his supporters led in Instructor and Kallu Sakkare, two well planned and neatly executed gambles. The former competing in the lower division of the Shanti Falls Plate run over a sprint was backed down from (7/2) to (90/100) and the smartly turned out colt in the hands of Naveen made every post a winning one, pegging back High Speed Dive, who is fancied to go one up and enter the winners' circle when saddled next. Sun Flare from Prasanna Kumar's stable finished third ahead of the second in demand at the betting ring,Greeley, who failed to save even money in place.

Next in the concluding event, the upper division of the Classic Story Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs, the judiciously prepared Kallu Sakkare, who was quoted at a long price in the morning was hammered down to (2/1), while the consistent Breeze Bluster from Lokanath Gowda's yard, who opened favourite at (6/4) had no takers even at (7/2), money pouring in on the vastly improved Warren ward partnered by Ramu. The fact that the right connections punted big despite Ramu listed to guide the fortunes of the winner sent out a strong message that this Warren Singh ward had the ability to outclass his seven rivals and he did that in emphatic fashion to the delight of the Warren Singh camp. All credit should go to owner Mahesh Gowda, who plays a lead role, meticulously planning and patiently waiting for the right opportunity to strike it rich. It is no secret that many pros, who are not enjoying the success rate, Mahesh Gowda has managed to record are frustrated and complaining that winners emerging from this camp parade their skills when the right money comes in the ring, or they race like duds. Well the complaint is debatable taking into account that Iron Clad at Mysore has won five races in-a-row and Instructor had the credentials to come out tops in this mediocre set. Mahesh Gowda after the lucrative double strike on Saturday disclosed that it dosen't come easy and a lot of hard work his team puts in each day to attain the results. "You need a little bit of luck too in this game and I'm enjoying the rub of the green at this moment," said Mahesh after Kallu Sakkare's smart victory. The Warren trainee appears in good nick and is set to provide an encore when saddled next.

In the upper division of the Ganga Plate run over a sprint, the topweighted She's A Lady from Imtiaz Khan's yard and Apollo Light from the stables of Prithviraj were fancied most before money came pouring in on the Pradeep Annaiah schooled Firefinch piloted by AR Pradeep. The strongly backed Pradeep ward soon topped the betting ring and many close to the stable touted Firefinch, a good bet. The well-backed Pradeep ward hit the front soon after the field of nine runners came under the starter's flag and called the shots, leading 1199 metres of the 1200 metres trip before the four to one shot Lady Godiva resolutely piloted by Arvind Kumar upset the applecart of the heavily backed favourite  in the final stride, a `nose' separating the two at the wire. She's A Lady finished third ahead of Apollo Light, who found this company too hot to handle.

Inayathullah, who led in Lady Godiva, earlier led in Mega Success in the lower division.of the Ganga Plate. The winner piloted by Jagadeesh produced a sparkling gallop in the final furlong to snuff out the challenge of Star Citizen and emerge a deserving winner. Pettes Love finished a tame third ahead of Princess Jasmine, who closed favourite in what was an very open affair.

The Darius Byramji schooled Helios and Vafadar from Sulaiman Attaollahi's yard were fancied most in the Buckpasser Plate, a event for juveniles run over a sprint. But it was the five to one shot Scarlette Lady from Prasanna Kumar's yard who came up tops producing a winning gallop in the hands of G Vivek to cruise home in splendid style. Helios followed the smart winner home ahead of Silicon Star, while Vafadar failed to make a favourable impression in his debut.

Like the well-backed Firefinch lost in the final stride, the strongly supported Glow In The Dark from Warren Singh's yard lost a race which he should have won, going down to the ten to one long shot Agera piloted by Antony Raj in the final stride in the lower division of the Classic Story Plate. Ashad Asbar astride Glow In The Dark failed to gain  a favourable position early on in the race and though the public choice did well to storm into contention and headed the field in the final furlong, he was beaten by Agera at the shadow of the winning post, much to the disappointment of his large following. My Solitaire caught the eye while finishing a creditable third and is one for the note book, while the second in demand at the betting ring, Twinkle Feet performed below par and failed to even make the frame.

The (9/2) shot Fondness Of You from Rajesh Narredu's yard brilliantly piloted by top gun  Suraj Narredu edged out the two market leaders Czar and Sofiya in a humdinger. Sofiya on the strength of her stunning last start win was expected to score again, but the filly was badly placed all through the sprint trip and in fact was asked to do too much in the straight by Trevor Patel. She gamely responded but tantalisingly fell short, a `neck' and shorthead separating the three at the wire.Czar gaining the runner-up berth by the proverbial whisker.

After many fair efforts, Crosswater from Arjun Manglorkar's yard finally broke ice, coming up tops in the upper division of the Shanti Falls Plate. Bold Act, who went down fighting  to Isabelle over an identical distance in his last start gained top billing, but he surprisingly failed to make a race of it and finished a poor fourth. The Strikingly, is another from Warren Singh's yard who has improved most and it will not be long before she earns her cornbill.
