LIVERMORE SWAMPS HER RIVALS IN HPSL GOLCONDA OAKS

By Usman Rangila | 06 Jan 2024 | HYDERABAD

Mr M Ramakrishna Reddy & trainer L D Silva leading Livermore (S Saqlain Up), winner of The Hpsl Golconda Oaks (Gr.2)

Livermore, the four-year old bay filly trained by Leo D’silva, passed the test of her speed and stamina with flying colours when recording her third regional classic success at Malakpet on Saturday. Leaving nothing to chance, jockey S. Saqlain took Livermore on a start-to-finish mission and achieved it with more than a measure of comfort when reducing the HPSL Golconda Oaks (Gr.2) to a one-horse contest. There was nothing to write home about her four rivals as Livermore left them fighting for the minor places. Original Sin chased the winner in vain in the second segment of the mile and half journey but managed to finish runner-up. Snowpiercer and She Can both ended a distance away. Owned by Mr M. Ramakrishna Reddy, Livermore was bred at Usha Stud Farms.

The Sri AS Krishna Memorial Cup, the supporting event of the day for horses in the highest class, was claimed by K. Satheesh-saddled Candy Girl. The five-year old mare strikes at will, or so it seems. After recording a hat-trick during the monsoon racing season, Candy Girl faltered in her first appearance this season. However, she was back to her winning ways as she shot into the lead from the barriers as is her wont and apprentice Ekram Alam was not required to do anything exceptional in the saddle as Candy Girl (Net Whizz – Frizbee) made every post of the mile journey a winning one. Lesser fancied Little Miss Angel tried to intimidate Candy Girl in the last furlong but she stretched out well when spurred by the apprentice to record her seventh career win. Miss Little Angel took the second place ahead of Icicle, who warmed up when the race was all but over. Joint-favourite Black Onyx ran thereabouts to be fourth.

Trevor Patel steered a profitable double through Duke of Tuscany and Enabling, who were both saddled by trainer Laxman Singh. Duke of Tuscany came from way off the pace and was one of the last runners in the field of seven to enter the straight behind leader Rolls Royce, who bolted from the gates and was well clear of his rivals at that stage. Trevor set alight Duke of Tuscany in the last furlong and half and deployed his whip eight times, the precise permissible number. In response, Duke of Tuscany unleashed a powerful run to zoom forth to go breezing past Rolls Royce in the last half furlong. Desert Hero drifted out alarmingly in the straight to finish on the outer rail and yet managed to finish second. Hoping Queen ended in the money after Rolls Royce ran out of fuel.

Trevor had his artistry in the saddle on display astride Enabling when toppling Miss Maya, who was being hailed as a winner in the Ranga Reddy Cup (Div-I) close home. No-hopers Classical Music and Divine Connection made the initial running over the six-furlong sprint with apprentice Shivansh quickly bringing Miss Maya to race close behind Classical Music. Miss Maya tackled the leader in the final furlong and half but soon had Enabling breathing down her neck. Trevor packed enough power in his riding aboard top-weighted Enabling (Roderic O’Connor – Favourite Royal) to collar the favourite close home and help her resume her winning ways. Adbhut ran a game third ahead of Classical Music. Alexina was outpaced throughout and ended last.

A speedy display from D. Netto’s ward Ragnarok saw the four-year old chestnut achieve his third straight success in the Ranga Reddy Cup (Div-II). Ragnarok (Tenth Star – Sweet Caroline) seized the initiative from Happy Go Lucky as the race was flagged off after Ashhad Asbar astride the latter decided to do the chasing business. But Ragnarok showed a clean pair of heels to him and the other runners and scored an authoritative win in the hands of Kuldeep Singh (Sr.). First Class and Mark My Day ran on to finish second and third respectively after Happy Go Lucky flopped in the closing stages of the sprint. Like Happy Go Lucky, Santa Barbara too was off colour on the day she was expected to bid for a hat-trick. Both ended close on the haunches of Clefairy who ran fourth.

The four-year old filly Deccan Daisy showed positive improvement following her previous two runs and produced a determined effort to nail favourite Final Judgement on the post. With little under two furlongs left for home, G. Vivek-ridden Final Judgement took charge of the running from leader Exeter and seemed to be making it to the wire when P. Sai Kumar brought Deccan Daisy with a sustained run. KSV Prasad Raju-schooled Deccan Daisy (Phoenix Tower – Promissory Note) got up just in time to nail Final Judgement in virtually her last stride. That’s My Love came with a strong run towards the end to finish a close third ahead of joint-favourite Mix The Magic, who failed to accelerate in the straight.

Two temperamental equines – Samrat and Indradhanush, went on to earn their maiden success in the other races conducted during the day. The tinkering of the equipment on these two runners seemed to have brought the desired results for their connections. After taking a level jump from the starting stalls and travelling about two furlongs, Samrat, who was running with a hood on, moved up steadily to head the field and established a good lead, which proved to be decisive in the end. Apprentice Kuldeep Singh, though using his whip in an improper manner, drove Jasbir Singh-groomed Samrat (Saamidd – Joleene) confidently to keep the two fancied runners, Toffee and top-weighted favourite Blazing Gun, at bay. Club Queen ran a faraway fourth.

Running with sheep-skin pieces on this occasion, Indradhanush did not take a fluent jump from the gates but was good enough to go into the lead. Favourite Golden Inzio showed some urgency and was brushed up by Kuldeep (Sr.) to race alongside Indradhanush. However, apprentice Shivansh confidently drove trainer B. Mukesh Kumar-nurtured Indradhanush in the final lap and managed to stave off the threat posed by late-finishing Hurricane Bay, who was running for the first time under D’silva’s charge after change in ownership. A short-head separated the two at the finish whilst Golden Inzio ran third after being ridden into the ground. London Bell ended fourth.
